Sony: "The PS2 Is Not Going Away Anytime Soon"

You know, everyone laughed when Sony initially said the PlayStation 3 would have a 10-year lifespan. They continue to say it to this day, and most people still don't believe it...and yet, it seems even its predecessor will have a 10-year life cycle!

The PS2, which has sold over 120 million units worldwide and over 50 million in the U.S., continues to survive in a new generation that is already several years old. And now, according to Spong, SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller has said the system will continue forward into 2010. He said that "with the lineup for 2009 and 2010, the PS2 is not going away anytime soon," and reminds us all of Jack Tretton's earlier words, which state- "the only way to kill the PS2 business is to stop supporting it." On a related note, Koller mentioned that we shouldn't expect a price cut for the PS2 - some believed it would fall to $99 for the 2008 holiday season - as the $129 price point seems to be working out just fine. Koller said Sony is "comfortable with the current price," and that's probably because the consumers also appear to be comfortable with it. So if you keep thinking that every time you turn around you'll see a "PS2 Discontinued" article, we suggest you don't hold your breath.

Now, if we remember correctly, the PS2 launched at the end of October in 2000 in North America. It launched earlier that year in Japan, so - provided we can add and subtract - the PS2 will end up with a 10-year lifespan. So why shouldn't the PS3 receive the same treatment? Of course, this doesn't mean we won't see a new console for 10 years (the PS3 launched 6 years after the PS2), but you get the point. The most popular console in history will keep rolling along!

oh yes FFXII.........I forgot about that disapointment for once.now its all smashing back, thoughs 80 dreary hours of just walking though field, temples and towers and battling wiht no really character development.HELL!

I liked it. Wasn't as good as FFX but still a great game w/ a kick-ass new battle system.

No character development? Oh u mean the main character...what was his name again? Guess they should've developed that character more. lol.

lol...sometimes i wonder if Sony is doing this just to maintain the crown of Top Console. Kinda like how Brett Favre or Jerry Rice just wouldn't retire. Is he doing it just to put his record outta reach? Is Sony doing it just to put the PS2's record outta reach of the Wii?

i ment most characters, balthier and ashe were the only to with a good developed history, the otehrs were quite plain... but lets not start an FF war again like the last FFXIII thread....

I feel that there nothing really left on the PS2, i play all the old releases, but there not really been anything since the beginning of 2008.

Well it was an FF game, i was determined to beat it, didnt bother with the sidequests. being fair the end section on the ship werent bad, but thats no excuse for the rest of the game.

They keep it "alive" because they can and developers still get profit from the games they make for it, the last PS2 game I played properly was Dragon Quest 8.

thats great .. i feel that the PS3 will get the same treatment as the PS2.. it will probably last longer just because it can do more theres no need for SONY to release the PS4 anytime soon as some has suggested ...

I feel like Sony should let PS2 go.They should stop production if they want gamers to transit to ps3.
XBOX is no longer in production,all resources are for 360 now.
Sometimes i feel like ps2 is slowing ps3 down.

If i'm not mistaken, ps2 is the cheapest console option retailed. So if anything, it slows down 360 core system sales.

Like any of you really care about the last generation. And for those that do they already have a PS2.

I guess you have to hang on when you shaft your customers by removing backwards capability.

I hear ya bank. I just cant stand the fact that if I ever do get a PS3 ill have to play all them kick ass PS2 games on my old system..

Was it really worth the lower cost? Not to me and many others. As 60 gigs go top dollar on Ebay.

That's because Microsoft a) barely has any resources in the first place and b) doesn't give a f*ck about its consumers as long as they can sign exclusivity deals which force people to buy their products.

Anybody seen a retail PC recently that doesn't come with some version of Windows already on it?

And I think shafting the Xbox owners who suddenly had NO games to buy is far worse than dropping BC (which certainly sucks).

See, thats the problem with xbox followers like Josh. They get used to things being rushed to the market.

So Josh...I take it you like how quickly M$ is moving along? You like how their carelessness produced the red ring of death and the disc scratching issues? Or maybe how they didn't include HDMI input until the Elite was launched.

I'm sorry but atleast SONY cares about us customers, unlike Microsoft thieves. So yeah, as a matter of fact, "a matter of time" is better than going through 3+ consoles in a 4 year time.

Ever hear of "good things comes to those who wait"? obviously not...

Thats why Gears 2 had one of the worst endings in gaming history in my opinion. YES, I have beaten the game in Co-op with my cousin who lives next door. And I was happy with the game until I realized Microsoft rushed sh** again and messed up royally.

Imagine if microsoft developed Home...Would have been a disaster plagued, rush frenzy.

Anyone agree?

That's an interesting point www_dot_com makes, they probably would get more folks on the ps3 wagon if they shutdown the ps2, though in the current economy I think it's good they have a lower priced console still out there as it sounds like Sony (and most companies) can't afford to put some of their breadwinners out to pasture just yet. I'd probably never go back and play any PS2 games now that I've got a PS3, even if emulation was supported, but I must say anyone who doubts the capability of the PS2 now still needs to check out God of War 2. I'd argue the graphics and gameplay rival some of the stuff out there for Xbox360 and PS3 and I remember first seeing that after months of mediocre to crap PS2 releases and thinking, 'What the heck are all the other game companies excuses???? This PS2 can still get down when the right developers are stroking it.' ;-) It really made most other PS2 developers looks like lazy sods, imo.

I'm trying to remember but after Sony released the PS2, how long did they keep the PS1 going? I remember buying my PS2 and seeing a new remodeled slim PS1 on sale at the same time. I don't think the PS1 had the lifespan that the PS2 has but it must have been close wasn't it?

Had one PS1, unfortunately went through 2 PS2's (DVD tray fried on first one) PS1 is still working and second PS2 is still going. I gave them to my brother.

I had two, but not because either of them failed. I bought the second to get a second (third?) controller and the online adaptor, since it would only cost me about $25 more than buying them separately. I sold it to a friend's son when I got my PS3. I still have the first one and it still works fine.

I have had one PS1 and One PS2 (both original chunky ones) I look after my stuff, they get covered with dust cloths etc and polished now and again. More so the PS3 as I can see the dust on that with it being balck. Maybe I need to get out more. My mum says my room looks like a museum with all dust sheets everywhere but hey keeps me in a safe frame of mind then who am I to argue my systems still work lol.

Last game I bought for the PS2 was Manhunt 2 for the simple fact it got banned in UK lol.

Ok I'll finally agree with you josh the best looking game ever in my opinion on the Dumb Box 1 was Nija Gaiden, and thats it, even resident evil couldnt even be on the dumb box 1 for the gamecube could produce more polygons per sec and so on! But even though Ps2 still sells there are PS2's within the backwards compatibility, so PS2 has its mark left everywhere, and when the 8th generation comes out the PS3 is still going to be selling, right when the PS4 comes out and it will repeat over and over again, its called a succesful business company name Sony!

WOW, i surprised PS2 is still doing so well, i dont think they should stop making PS2s becasuse they are still making money of them. I thin k all the profit they make on PS2 will go toward s the PS3 and it wont stop untill developers say they had enough of the PS2 or the sales slump down. I beleieve this will happen in late 2010 but untill then, Sony should enjoy there sucess and do the same for PS3.

While I still have a PS2, it was relegated to the kids' room, where it's primarily used as a DVD player. Kinda sad, I know, but reality is reality. However, I'd be more inclined to keep some of the PS2 classics around if my PS3 had B/C (which unfortunately it doesn't).

All I own is a PS2 ( I sold my 360 when I heard that many consoles were ruined with the red ring of death ). I have no desire to upgrade to a PS3, so I am glad Sony will still make PS2 games for a while longer.

Over the past two years my PS2 game collection has increased drastically since the prices of Ps2 games are so low now. Got well over 300 games now, and it will be a long time for me to get thru them all.

For me the Ps2 is the greatest game system of all time, and I owned just about all the game systems going back to the PONG days.
