Activision Schedules Guitar Hero: Smash Hits For June 16

If a band is popular enough and produces enough albums, the next marketing step is usually obvious: release a Greatest Hits compilation. Well, considering that the Guitar Hero franchise is about half-music album anyway, Smash Hits seems perfectly logical.

According to GameSpot, Activision has announced that Guitar Hero: Smash Hits is now set to release on June 16 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Wii. Initially announced as Modern Hits back in February, this collection features 48 master tracks from four previous Guitar Hero iterations, including Rocks the '80s. The game also "reworks the tunes to accomodate the vocal and drum parts introduced with Guitar Hero: World Tour last year." We'll get the Music Studio, both offline and online multiplayer, 8 new venues, and of course, the best and most popular music we've had in the blockbuster series. They've announced a handful of the tracks that will be in Smash Hits, and so far, that includes Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon," Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name," Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son," Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time," and Heart's "Barracuda." For the rest of the currently revealed songs and a debut trailer, head on over to GameSpot via the link above. We expect the full track list to arrive some time soon, especially considering the game's launch isn't too far off.

We know you're probably asking: "why would the hardcore GH players buy this; they've probably already got all the games." Well, why do hardcore fans of a particular band buy the Greatest Hits album when they have those songs on albums they already own? That's right, 'cuz all the songs are on the same disc. And besides, in this case, you never got a chance to play something like "Bark at the Moon" on the drums, so there's plenty of reasons to add Smash Hits to your wish list.
