Japan gets a new Playstation 2 model.
Today, Sony of Japan made an official announcement regarding Japan's third generation of Playstation 2. Having recently shipped the PS2 SCPH-18000, which came bundled with a DVD remote, Sony is ready to ship the SCPH-30000 PS2 on April 18, 2001. This new PS2 is the same one we have here in the US. Instead of the of a little port n the back of the console, there's now a 3 1/2 inch bay, which will home the PS2 HDD when it's released this June in Japan. What I don't understand is whether or not Sony plans to release two HDDs; external and internal. One for the people who have an earlier PS2, and the other with those who will purchase the SCPH-30000 PS2.
This new PS2 will not come bundled with a DVD remote, so you're left to buying it by yourself. These changes will in no way affect the playback of DVDs, PS2 games or PSOne games, so do not be concerned. But as always the territorial lockouts are still in effect. Sony has allowed Japanese retailers to set their own price on the PS2, but aren't allowed to sell it way over for what it's worth, 39,800 YEN.
