AOL on PS2.
Today AOL and Sony announced a deal that will affect Sony Playstation 2's online capabilities. Under this agreement, Sony and AOL will provide PS2 owners with common AOL utilities such as instant messaging, email, and chat all while playing your favorite Playstation 2 game like Metal Gear Solid 2, Onimusha or SSX. Sony will offer PS2 users a special network adapter that will allow gamers to use their existing AOL accounts or create a new one and surf the net using AOL. With AOL on your PS2, you will be able to play internet compatible games without a problem. Sony and AOL will look into developing a special Netscape browser for the Playstation 2, and invest time into broadband technologies. Sony will be releasing an LCD display (NTSC/PAL and XGA compatible), PS2 hard-drive (HDD), keyboard and mouse, to make the AOL experience more enjoyable by the end of the year! Even more, AOL features will be implemented into Playstation 2 dev-kits for developers to utilize.
"Given our shared corporate vision and power for the evolution of online computer entertainment, AOL and SCEI make ideal partners," said Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "With AOL by our side, Sony Computer Entertainment will begin to provide the world's content creators access to a new community for digital entertainment and distribution. Just as PlayStation 2 ushered in a new era of computer entertainment, we are now escalating the evolution of great gaming experiences into what will become a highly interactive, real-time broadband network environment."
"Sony Computer Entertainment and AOL are both committed to delivering the most compelling interactive content and applications possible for consumers," said Barry Schuler, Chairman and CEO of America Online, Inc. "By combining
AOL's industry-leading infrastructure and trademark convenience with the media-rich power of PlayStation 2 to turbo-charge the gaming experience, we'll be able to provide our members with another exciting way to connect by extending our AOL Anywhere strategy to a powerful new interactive platform."
There are currently 29 million AOL subscribers, 10 million Playstation 2 owners worldwide and 20 million by the end of the year. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me. More info on this as soon as it's revealed.
