SCEA to increase production of PS2 units
It has been announced by Kaz Harai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, that the company plans to increase PS2 production in North America to prepare for the holidays. Sony will reportedly increase production from 1.8 million units to 2 million units a month; the same number Japan has been producing since the summer or 2000. Harai also stated that the previous comments by SCEA that they have no plans to drop the price of the PS2 still stand.
"We're very comfortable with the [$299] price point,'' Harai said.
Sony expects to ship 10 million units of the PS2 in North America by March 2002. Worldwide, the PS2 has shipped just under 20 million units and should easily break that mark in the next months. However, these numbers are based on little competition that the PS2 has faced for the past year. Things will definitely be getting interesting as the Xbox and GameCube both prepare for launch.
