Fall 2002

Infogrames was kind enough to show us some exclusive footage of their next Terminator game behind closed doors yesterday. Terminator: Dawn of Fate is actually a prequel of the first Terminator movie, where the entire goal in the game is to get Kyle Reese to the time machine created by SkyNet, which is where the original movie picks up.

Infogrames reps started the show by giving us a glimpse of the incredible CG opening sequence, which nearly mimics the effects seen in the first movie in both clarity and detail. After that, we got a look at the gameplay, seeing John Connor kicking some AI ass with a variety of weapons. In all, there will be approximately 15 weapons to choose from, ranging from tasers to bazookas, as well as the ability to fight hand to hand. Overall the combat appeared to be fairly solid, with a lot of traditional techniques employed, with a few nice touches, such as the adrenaline meter. As you continue to kill terminators, you increase a meter that, once full, can be unleashed to increase your accuracy power and stamina. Another nice touch is that how you damage a terminator changes the way the AI tries to attack you. For instance, if you blow the gun arm off a T-100, then it will charge you and try to grab you by the throat. If you manage to whack off both arms, it will detonate shortly thereafter trying to take you with it. Also, any direct hit to a terminators head results in instant destruction, which is especially cool when in adrenaline mode as your character has uncanny accuracy and a penchant for head shots.

Perhaps the coolest thing in this game is the artistic license that Infogrames has taken with the license. For this game alone they created a plethora of new terminator models, such as the T-400 and T-500, which are basically supped up versions of the T-100, with more firepower and greater defense. Even cooler than that, is that for the first time ever, people will actually be able to witness SkyNet in person, on camera, courtesy of designers at Infogrames who created a completely original concept with licensed approval. I did have the chance to see the inside of SkyNet, but I am not going to ruin it for you. Suffice it to say, it's probably not what you were expecting, but pretty damn cool nonetheless.

Terminator: Dawn of Fate is being developed by Paradigm, and is scheduled for a late 2002 release. We'll get you more details on the game soon.
