Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions Preview
I approached the Wreckless PS2 kiosk with very low expectations. After I picked up the controller, and had one of the developers give me a great briefing on the PS2 version, I learned that Wreckless would be more of an overblown expansion pack, rather than a port. It's what SSX Tricky is to the original SSX, if you can imagine that. First of all, the controls have been corrected, something that the Bunkasha team said they loved working with the PS2 on, because the Dual Shock 2 is such an awesome pad. The cars control so much better than they did on the Xbox. The precision is all there, so those who hated the Xbox version because of that, worry no more.
The team has added a little over 20 new missions in the game, which brings the total to 40 missions in the game -- doubling the size of the game in comparison to its Xbox brethren. Now here's something that is bound to wet your pants; the PS2 version WILL have a free roam mode, as an unlockable feature. Yes, I was able to get confirmation, that once the game is complete, a free roam mode will be unlocked. That is of course fantastic news for those who so wanted one in the Xbox version. Also, I was told that Bunkasha was well on their way to making the PS2 Wreckless look every bit as good as the Xbox version. I was a bit skeptical when I heard, but he assured me it will indeed look the same. Currently, at only 20% the game was looking good, and running without a hitch.
The multiplayer modes were fun, and I especially enjoyed the cat and mouse type multiplayer match, where two cars are set on one screen. One car chases, the other runs. If the runner gets far enough, or is lost on the screen, then he/she gets a point. If the chaser catches up and rams the runner, he/she gets a point. It was pretty fun, and I enjoyed playing that along with other modes.
Look for Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions later in November, if all goes well, this title will be worth your cash.
