The series which was first born on the PS back in its early days has returned to grace Sony's system once again but this time it isn't Playstation, better yet it's PS2. Studio Liverpool has taken over the new next-generation version of Wipeout to develop it for the PS2. Wipeout 3 was the latest installment on the PS, the game featured a new refined high resolution graphics engine, with great crafts, and best of all a pretty retro techno soundtrack, that brought the whole sci-fi atmosphere together. We all knew that Wipeout's success would continue on PS2 (especially because Psygnosis is under Sony's wing) and Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed Wipeout Fusion to the public. No word on a US release yet but you can bet it will happen. In the meantime enjoy the screens and preview we have for you.

The visuals moved me almost as much as The Getaway did when I first saw the game. The environments are incredibly detailed and are overflowing with so much of the PS2's power. Wipeout Fusion is another example of what the PS2 can do when developers really sit down with the system and tinker with all of its features. With the exception of some noticeable aliasing problems, Wipeout Fusion is clearly one of the best looking racers that is being developed for the PS2 right now, the only games I see in the way is GT2000 and The Getaway. The crafts are also another finely engineered product that Studio Liverpool has managed to pull out, all of the crafts that we have seen so far are all uniquely shaped with nice looking bodies and great looking details. I'll let the screens speak for themselves.

The fourth installment to Wipeout will feature a new story to go along with the whole concept of futuristic racing, but don't expect anything deep and intriguing. The year is 2150 AD and the Federation unveils a new league called the Wipeout F9000. This league features a whole new slew of next generation futuristic crafts which unlike the previous crafts can defy gravity by flipping [and flying] upside down, sideways (left or right) or just plain belly down. And did I mention that these new crafts have 48 different parameters, unlike the previous crafts that have only 7 different parameters for defying the laws of gravity. Just like Wipeout 3, there will be a good variety of tracks to race on, though Sony hasn't commented on what they are. Wipeout Fusion will be two-players, but has not received a release date for the US yet. We'll keep you posted.
