Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy Preview

  Action adventure games come a dime a dozen these days, and so over populated is the genre that it is increasingly difficult to find a game that actually manages to stand out in any way. Games like Primal tried to offer a fresh spin on an otherwise stale genre, but often these offerings come up just a bit short. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy will look to rise above the rest of the pack by offering a unique gameplay experience that alternates between action and puzzle solving.

   Telling the tale of a young demi-god named, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy takes place in an ancient Egyptian setting, in a time where the forces of light and dark were separated many years ago. Sphinx's land was long ago connected to several other worlds through Lunar and Solar Discs. However, each of the worlds has undergone some terrible fate, and Sphinx realizes that someone is messing with the careful balance of power, separating the worlds and creating chaos throughout the galaxy. Now Sphinx's world is turned upside down as once peaceful villages are now at war and monsters roam freely. It will be up to Sphinx to discover who is behind it all and set things right.

   At first glance Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy seems just like any other action adventure game on the market. After all, combining action and puzzle elements isn't exactly ground breaking, is it? However, Sphinx looks to take the premise a bit farther. One way developer Eurocom plans on doing this is with some very innovative gameplay. One example is how players will use the mummy to solve puzzles. When controlling the mummy Tutenkhamen, you'll have to subject him to several sadistic acts such as electrocution and immolation in order to solve certain puzzles. For instance, players may need to electrocute the mummy in order to activate a switch, or light him on fire in order to burn down certain barricades. Such acts of abuse certainly sound unique, and pretty damn interesting, too.

   Controlling Sphinx is a bit different. When controlling the main character, players will be able to attack and block with a sword and shield. Sphinx can perform several different attack combos, which he learns over the course of the game. You'll also be able to use a blow dart to silently take out enemies from a distance. When using the dart you can enter first person view for increased accuracy.

   The gameplay in Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is split between controlling Sphinx and the Mummy alternately in parallel stories. The two characters do not know about the existence of the other, but they'll both learn about each other as the game progress through the seven different game worlds. Eurocom promises that each of the levels will be huge and varied, and each one will make use of different rules, forcing players to stay on their toes. Each of the worlds will have their own enemies and bosses, with sub bosses strewn about.

   Overall, Sphinx looks fairly impressive, and looks to make good use of both characters in their own unique way. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is currently scheduled for a September 2003 release, and we'll have more information on this game in the future.
