Hideo Kojima the mastermind behind the Metal Gear franchise is fully confident that his new MGS game will overcome any videogame out there, while he never stated that, I know deep down he feels that way. Metal Gear was first released back in the late 80s on the NES, the un-official Snake's Revenge later followed, and after a ten year wait we were finally treated to a three dimensional version, and a game that many believe to be the best console game ever created. Metal Gear Solid made extreme waves as it quickly became not only the best Playstation videogame ever (although Final Fantasy VII is in my heart) but also one of the best selling console games ever. MGS broke boundaries as it pushed the PSOne to great limits with some of the best visuals thus far in a PS game, and without a doubt the most cinematic action/adventure experience that any console will ever see. So when news broke out about the PS2 and everything, Hideo Kojima and his team went straight back to work on creating a sequel to Metal Gear Solid on the PS2 hardware. The new game officially titled Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty was first shown at the E3 2000 show, it was a ten minute clip that featured 100% gameplay and absolutely no CGs or FMVs of any sort, when it was all said and done, and the lights came back on, you couldn't hear a nuclear explosion if it happened inside the E3 exposition. That was the reaction that Hideo and company had bestowed upon the spectators who were lucky enough to see the ten minute trailer, see what kind of impact MGS2 will have on you by reading this preview on the game.

While Hideo Kojima claims that he would rather revolutionize the gameplay in MGS2 rather than visuals, I find that hard to believe, as Metal Gear Solid 2 has some of the most incredible graphics I have seen on any console. At the moment anti-aliasing has not been implemented, but you can be sure that it will be when the game is finished and released next Fall. On the first note we have the amazing character detail that Konami seems to be putting in, Snake's now growing a goatee or beard of some sort and just by looking at his face you'll notice the hairs on his chin and cheeks, talk about detail. Then we have Snake's longer mullet, as if his hair wasn't long enough in the first MGS, Snake obviously doesn't believe in hair-cuts. So combining the rugged face look and the hair, Snake is definitely the ideal American bad-ass. The bodies are super sleek, they've got a solid build to them, and look frighteningly real, and the same can be said for the enemies. Environments are another big plus, the structures and other atmospheric items look great, a whole load of detail has been put into them to almost make them look pre-rendered, but in-fact they are real time. In the end this may very well be the best looking PS2 game or next-gen console game period, unless Final Fantasy X has something to say about that.

The gameplay will remain true to Metal Gear Solid with all of the stealth gameplay in check with the sequel, so don't worry about it. Instead of being in an arctic environment such as Alaska, our very own David Hayter (a.k.a SolidSnake), will be in New York City hence the word "liberty" in the sub title. If you all remembered after defeating MGS, you hear two people speaking to each other, one was the President and the other a mysterious character named Solidus, guess what everybody, Solidus seems to be the games primary villain. Throughout the game Snake will once again be forced to cover himself by hiding in boxes, avoiding cameras, and being the best possible sharp shooter he can possibly be. Socoms and Pistols will return, but guess what its been said that the game can be beaten without killing a single enemy by using the tranquilizer gun that Snake is equipped with, but of course the bosses are not included. Snake's arsenal of weapons will be similar to NGS' but will also feature tons of new other weapons. Now Snake's new enemies will include Solidus and an un-known female figure that I believe will eventually join Snake on the good side. And then we have the return of Ocelot, who was the only surviving member of Liquid's gang, he miraculously has a new hand, but maybe the game will explain the ordeal. This is pretty much the most information Konami has given us, I don't really know if David Hayter's voice will return, but I've got a very good hunch that he definitely will. Meanwhile enjoy the five new screens and don't forget to stay tuned for a follow up preview of MGS2, and hopefully more screenshots.
