Playstation 2's long line of racing games seems to be getting longer and longer by the day. We were first treated to Ridge Racer V, Smuggler's Run, Midnight Club: Street Racing and Moto GP all on the same date of October 26th. Then we have the extremely anticipated Sony titles including Gran Turismo 3 and The Getaway both aimed at a Winter/Spring 2001 release. Now we have Criterion Studios' game S.R.C for Playstation 2. The game was first shown at E3 2000 running at a crisp 60 frames per second, so here we are delivering the few screenshots that Criterion released and a little information based on the game.

S.R.C is already looking to be one of the better looking Playstation 2 games, while it isn't Gran Turismo 3, the graphics are still superb in their own right. The environmental detail is downright lovely, the buildings stand tall, with a magnitude of detail in each building, and since this game is going to be a street racer there will be a ton of buildings and other structures to look at. The car models based on these early screenshots look incredibly good, but I know that the final product should look twice as good as this, and if Trickstyle for the Sega Dreamcast was any indication on how well Criterion is able to utilize next-gen hardware then S.R.C may be one of the year's best looking games.

Criterion has commented pretty much nothing on the gameplay, except that they are planning on making it unique, but with games like Smuggler's Run, Midnight Club and Ridge Racer V, it's getting harder and harder to present any real innovation in racing games, but we'll see what Criterion will be able to whip up. I personally believe that this will be a mission based driver in the blood vain of The Getaway and possibly some Midtown Madness/Midnight Club ingredients added for flavor, and if my prediction is correct then S.R.C may not only be one of the best looking PS2 games, but also one that may be the most enjoyable. I'm hoping that the final product features licensed vehicles, or at least mock-ups of licensed cars (like Midnight Club), and I know for a fact that the final build should run at a super smooth 60 frames per second. S.R.C is in early stages, and Criterion Studios will be taking their precious time with it, and I'm predicting a Summer 2001 release for the game. Stay tuned as we'll try to score some more screenshots of S.R.C.
