Still remains the greatest RPG series and best selling videogame series ever, selling a little over 30 million units worldwide, no other franchise can come close to Final Fantasy, except the Dragon Quest/Warrior series, which has sold over 25 million games worldwide. Final Fantasy VII started it all in the new era, selling over a million copies in just a few days and sparking a videogame [genre] trend that would grab a majority of Sony Playstation owners. Final Fantasy VIII while herald as the plastic link in the franchise by a few, is also hailed as the second most innovative FF game since FFV. Final Fantasy VIII was an astounding adventure, even though it was somewhat sparse in the story, it also sold remarkably well, surpassing the pre-order record as well. As Square was shipping FFVIII, Square was nearly done working on Final Fantasy IX. A return to the more medieval times, FFIX was yet another perfect-score game, and sold just as well as the first two. And as they did with FFVIII, during the middle of FFIX's development, the FFVIII staff went to work on Final Fantasy X, and here we are, 96-bits later, as FFX is almost ready to go in Japan.

Although Squaresoft is being a bit stingy with the screenshots, they gave us about 4 gameplay shots of FFX, but from we can tell, the game looks awesome. Although it's not Metal Gear Solid 2 awesome, Final Fantasy X looks fresh, sporting thousands of polygons per character and incredibly detailed real-time environments. Of course the computer animated visual cut-scenes will make their way back to FFX in full force. The character detail will not only be composed of thousands of polygons, but also include facial animation, that will directed so that the moves move along perfectly with the voice acting. And "yes", I know that these screenshots display some jaggies, SquareSoft should have these cleared up by the time the game is ready to ship in Japan this June. Notice the scenery though, the screenshot with Yuna shows some marvelous looking trees, each tree and its distinctive tree branch are very detailed, and not one tree looks like the other. Even though the status of the game, at the point when these screenshots were taken is unknown, but nevertheless I can't wait to see the final result.

Gameplay details are scarce, but based on what I came up with, Final Fantasy X could easily be the most innovative in the series! Other than the fact that there will be optional voice acting included into the games dialogue, Final Fantasy X's characters and weapons are some of the weirdest I've seen in any game. Yuna may look average, but take a close look at her and notice that she has two different eye-colors, green and blue. Apparently they may have something to do with controlling time, or something related to time. I'm sure you've seen the Tidus CG screenshot of him standing in cool-blue water. Take a close look at his sword and notice that it's got water-bubbles to the very left of it, before the handle. Could it be that this sword is somehow composed of water? I mean, you can see through it and its got bubbles spewing out of it. If so, then you've got to hand it Square for creating the coolest FF weapon ever. Getting to know the characters, Tidus is a sports fan who is a pro at a game called Blitzball, which also explains the blue & white ball in the weapons/sunset screenshot. Yuna is a summoner who inherited her powers from her father. It has been said by Square that her eyes are a very significant role in the game. Folks, we'll hopefully try to get the Japanese version of Final Fantasy X reviewed ASAP, and if Square is kind enough, maybe they will make the game bilingual, like they did with The Bouncer.
