The original was the captor among many Nintendo 64 owners. Extreme-G may have been a WipeOut rip-off on two wheels, but the fact is that it was one hellishly great game. It featured lighting quick gameplay with bikes that can soar to speeds at nearly 700 MPH, the track design was filled with loops, straightways and weapons for your speeding and adrenaline pleasure. What else was great about the game? It was a 4-player title, like most N64 games were, and playing with friends was even more fun than playing the game solo. A while later the sequel would come along, and even though it wasn't as exciting as the first, it still proved to be a worthy one. Two years later, fast-forward to March 2001, Acclaim announces that Extreme-G3 would be exclusively released on the Playstation 2. We've got a preview and screenshots to keep you covered.

I was quite amazed when I first saw the original Extreme-G for N64, and with the latest revelation of the PS2 title, I'm even more thrilled than I initially was. To say that Extreme-G3 looks good, is an understatement, the proper word would be 'fantastic'. The texture detail is among the first noticeable things when looking at the game, the walls look amazingly detailed, they look so real that I can almost see the pebbles coming off the wall, because of the wind caused by high-velocity speeds at which these bikes travel. Ok so I'm exaggerating, but you guys/gals get the point. The track detail is already looking great, the twists, loops and straightways are placed in their spots, and I just can't wait to test them out. The bikes look superb as well, and it's easy to tell by these shots that detail in them certainly has not been overlooked.

What's great about Extreme-G games is their replay value. Both had four-player modes that made the game even more replayable, and it looks like the PS2 sequel will keep the series gleaming with joy. There will be 12 bikes to choose from, all of which are heavily shielded, so taking a beating is something that you just have to stick with in this racing/combat game. Speaking of combat, weapons can also be picked up and used against your enemies so that you can advance placement on the course. And since the first two Extreme-G games had four-player matches, the PS2 version will very likely have that as well, seeing as how that is after all one of the game's biggest features, and the fact that we are dealing with the PS2's power makes it more obvious.

Extreme-G3 being a PS2 exclusive is great news and all, but I'm still wondering whether or not WipeOut Fusion will make it for 2001, there have been tons of rumors of the game being either cancelled or delayed until 2002 (boooo!). No release date has been given to Extreme-G3, but my guess is that it should be available this Spring or early Summer.
