September 2001

We seem to be forgetting Capcom as the creators of the Street Fighter series, but instead most closely associating them to games like Resident Evil and Onimusha. It's obvious that Capcom has cooled off with their fighting games, the last truly great Capcom fighter was Marvel vs. Capcom. Year after year Capcom would release a new survival horror game after the other. We first saw Resident Evil: Code Veronica for Dreamcast, also keep in mind that I'm referring to 128-bit consoles, following that came the announcement of a samurai survival horror game titled Onimusha: Warlords. Following that announcement was the announcement of a PS2 version of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and right after that Devil May Cry was revealed. The spin on this amazing game is that it plays nothing like Resident Evil games have in the past. Read more to find out.

It's pretty much impossible to get any screenshots of DMC, other than those three that we have now. And don't tell us to import Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for $90 just for the demo, 'cause that's just plain ridiculous. From the movies that I've been drooling over, I can tell you that a lot of detail is being put into this game, to make it look better than Onimusha: Warlords or pretty much every other game in development. Off the top of my head, I could come up only with Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 as visual threats to DMC. Based on what I've seen, I can assure that the environments are fully polygonal and do not feature any of that pre-rendered material we're so used to seeing from Capcom. The textures look absolutely stunning, the attention to detail really shows, as the game's atmosphere looks alive. The character detail looks superior to that of Onimusha's main character, Dante looks brilliant. If Samanosuke was composed of 10,000 polygons, that can only mean Dante sports even more. When I first saw Devil May Cry, I was stunned, I froze, I knew I had to play this game if it was the last thing I do, if the movie made me so hungry, imagine the final product...

What's more innovative than kicking butt with a hand-gun and a sword, nothing if you ask me. Holding a sword in his right, and a gun in his left, Dante can use both weapons simultaneously in order to kill an enemy. In the movie they showed Dante slicing and dicing an enemy then shooting up the body parts of the enemy while they were in the air, this was a great example of him using both weapons for one cause. The video demonstration also showed that the old Resident Evil controls were a thing of the past, you will now be able to move your character 'freely' along the screen in full 360 degree rotation. Which means no more holding up to move, any direction will do. Of course the theme 'survival horror' has been loosened, this game will still feature grim and gothic environments, something that Capcom has been excellent in achieving.

Hopefully we'll be able to get some sort of playable version of Devil May Cry, so that we could provide you with more screens, I'm afraid this will have to do for now. For the moment, Devil May Cry is scheduled for a September 2001 release, I suggest that everyone keeps an eye out for it, it may turn on to be one of the best PS2 games of the year.
