Herdy Gerdy Preview
The original Playstation has not only made a name for itself when it comes down to RPG games, but when it comes down to adventure games as well. You can't deny the existence of games like Spyro the Dragon (1-3), Crash Bandicoot (1-3), Rayman 2, and especially Ape Escape. All of these games are some of the best adventure games out there, Ape Escape currently being the greatest adventure game to date, even surpassing the classic Super Mario 64. Sony Playstation did not pave the way for all adventure titles, but it sure did welcome many great ones, and even introduced the adventure/RPG genre with games like Threads of Fate and Alundra 2. We have now reached an all new era of gaming, PS2 has made its arrival and this time around it will pave the way for adventure games. We take our first look at Eidos/Core's amazing looking title, Hergy Gerdy.
A visual masterpiece this game certainly is, Hergy Gerdy is an incredibly vivid adventure game that will throw gamers into some of the most beautifully created environments to be witnessed. 'Gerdy is right up there with Namco's upcoming blockbuster, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil. Both games have an incredibly unique level of cell-shading, Klonoa's is far more apparent, but 'Gerdy does indeed use cell-shading, even though the environments are complexly polygonal. When you take a look at the actual gameplay screenshots, notice how incredible the lighting source is. In the screenshot with Gerdy taking a running step in a forest area, notice how the environment looks brown-ish because the trees and the grass are all fading out, on what looks to be a Fall season. And the sky is no different, it also looks gloomy, all of this creates a rich atmosphere that makes this game's worlds almost come alive. Hopefully Eidos is kind to us with more screenshots of this wonderful and enchanting looking title.
Herdy Gerdy pretty much summarizes what this game is about. It's about a young boy who's name is Gerdy and he is a herder on a farm. He helps out his dad regularly, until one day some sort of a curse appears over his pops' head. In order to restore his father, Gerdy enters a herding competition in hopes of winning the grand prize that will lift the claws of the black cat off of his dad's head. Gerdy's dad is also the areas best herder, so it only comes natural that Gerdy inherits his fathers features. Throughout the game, you will encounter 200 or so different creatures and enemies, 12 of which can be herded. There will be a total of 30 levels for you to choose from and make your way through, and apparently some level of strategic gameplay is involved as well, but that is unclear at the moment.
Herdy Gerdy is shaping up to be one of the most promising looking adventure games for the PS2. Look for it around September or October time, we'll try to get more screenshots of the game ASAP.
