Dragon's Lair Returns As High-Def Blu-Ray

The further we get from the classics, the more treasured they become. That's just the way of things. And thanks to Digital Leisure, one of the true arcade classics will soon find it's way back to store shelves, and in high-definition 1080p resolution! Yep, it's 1983's Dragon's Lair, and the game will release on Blu-Ray disc on April 9.

It's the first title ever that was created using BD-J, or Blu-Ray Java, which is an advanced format that allows the player to "enjoy a fully arcade-authentic experience." Dragon's Lair hit big way back when, and this re-release will also enjoy a fresh 5.1 surround sound mix in addition to the HD. Digital Leisure really put a ton of effort into retouching this one; the original film was cleaned "frame by frame," so the all new retro hit should shine as never before.

“I’ve seen the newly restored footage and it just looks amazing” said Don Bluth, original creator of Dragon’s Lair. “It looks even better than I can remember. The visuals, the 5.1 surround sound audio, all I can say is ‘Wow!’ Now a whole new generation can enjoy Dragon’s Lair all over again.”

But it doesn't end there, old-school fans. The disc will boast extra features - all of which are also in 1080p HD - which includes new interviews with Bluth, and fellow creators Gary Goldman and Rick Dyer, plus a full-length visual commentary of the game. This should offer gamers, both new and old, a whole new look at one of the classics from the dawn of gaming, and that can't possibly be a bad thing.

Digital Leisure also intends to continue down this path, as their next projects are similar re-releases of Space Age and Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp on Blu-Ray. So come April 9, you might want to check this one out at your nearest entertainment retailer, or you can always visit the Digital Leisure website.
