DICE's Last-Second BF3 Tinkering May Delay Reviews

You saw several Batman: Arkham City reviews the week before the game arrived. Typically, you see a ton of reviews on the day a title hits store shelves (the day the embargo usually lifts).

This is because typically, critics get the game a little in advance of the official release date, so reviews can drop on launch day. It's a common routine. However, you might be seeing a bit of a delay when it comes to Battlefield 3, although we imagine reviewers will be sprinting to get their analysis on the Internet.

We've received confirmation that our copy will be here "early next week," which is par for the course, as revealed at Wolf's Gaming Blog. By all rights, major critics should've had the game this week but EA says that DICE are perfectionists, and this slight delay is due to the developer's last-second tinkering. Apparently, they want to implement more updates and fixes based on fan feedback from the multiplayer beta.

"DICE are perfectionists — they will not stop polishing the game until it is in your hands."

So, they want to hold back the game until reviewers can have that same day-one update the normal consumer will have. See, if that update is significant and we checked out the game before those alterations, we might be examining a different game than you guys would ultimately play. ...and EA really doesn't want that to happen. The good news? All reviews should be based on the final final product.

The bad news? The results will be a little late. Maybe.

Our release day is a Friday here, so between the US Tuesday release and our release I'll catch a review. Not that it'll matter, I'll be getting it anyway.

I prefer seeing reviews on release day. I mean it only makes sense to review what the public is or will be playing.

Makes sense that reviewers should review the final copy, and I don't mind some last minute tinkering if it makes the experience better. Though it would be interesting to have someone review the difference to see the before/after.

No Uncharted 3? No Elder Scrolls V Skrim? No MGS HD Collection? No Assassin's Creed Revelations? No Modern Warfare 3? No Sonic Generations? No NFS The Run? No 007 Goldneye Reloaded?

I've preordered Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, MGS HD Collection, Sonic Generations and Zelda Syward Sword. Am getting Dance Central 2 and Assassin's Creed Revelations for Christmas.

Next year, am getting Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite. Might get Star Wars The Old Republic if all my friends get into it.

Wow!! What a time to be a gamer!!! Thank God for trading old games or else there'd be no way I could afford all this!!!

I laughed when I read "Dice" & "Perfectionists" in the same sentence. Have they forgotten about BF 1943 & BF Bad Company 1 & 2? One key part in those games that are broken is chat. Idk about you guys but to me, communication with my squad is important in a TEAM game (thank god for Skype). I can't wait to play BF3 like most but come on, Dice aren't perfectionists.

That chat complaint must have been in the early span of bfbc2's life, cuz i cant recall it being broken. not saying it aint true, just been a long time since it released, and i had it near its release.

Ugh. Saying things like this only set people up for people to root against you = bad idea.

I, personally, will be mad if the mics don't work right. This will be a rare game for me to chat with friends (and want to hear them) and if I can't do that, a la bfbc2 (for awhile) and the beta, I'll be really disappointed in the "perfectionists".

I called it... So they are trying to fix what people have been complaining about and now people are trying to find something new to complain about. Haha, people are so predictable. God forbid the developers listen to their fans and try to fix whats wrong with the game.LOL. Ahh... anyway, i'm glad they are trying to make it as bug free at launch time as possible.

Lol! Will you buying it on day one? My copy was pre-ordered so looking forward to getting next week :) Hopefully the PS3 version will be nice and polished, but you never know with these multi-platform games and their engines.

Anyway... I am sure it will be fun to play for another year like BF2 has been. All good entertainment.

I'm a little out of the loop, but wasn't EA probing for critical response just a bit ago? Like panning for critical feedback?

Now we're seeing last minute "updates" happening on day 1 of release.
I don't doubt BF3 will be a great game, but it doesn't take long to put 1 and 1 together and speculate as I have that their survey may have returned data that has given them cause to buy themselves one day free of critical response so BF3 can really cash in on it's mounted propaganda alone. Whatever the critics could possibly reveal may come up short to the hype factor for this game, because the hype seemingly is clocking in at 10. Where, perhaps, statistically speaking, even a strong BF3 rating of 85%, could cost EA a lot in day one sales.

GT5 should have been treated the same way. GT5 went to customers as an unfinished game, and was subsequently torched for it.

Outside of PSXE, hardly anyone else understood that GT5 was "living and breathing".

In all honesty, with SO much time that PD had to work on it, and after all the delays they had no excuse to release anything incomplete.

FFS the dlc is even delayed

honestly... I just want the game to be released regardless of whatever hype or propaganda there is thats surrounding it. I've played the beta and i loved it. I honestly don't need a reviewer to tell me anything more than what I already know. If i liked the beta then i'll like the finished product. Plain and simple. i swear, people just love drama and to be quite honest, they feed off of it. Who cares if they sent out a survey!!! who cares if they don't send out review copies before the release date!!! So all these people that review games have to wait like the rest of us normal folk (no offense Ben), Who Cares!!! It's not that their job isn't important, but whats one more day?!? In the grand scheme of things... Does it really matter? Just release the game already

No review will make a difference to me, because I'm still getting the game.

With that said, I'm pretty sure the reviews from critics and fans alike will be universally positive. There's no way it can be negative, to be honest with you.

I knew it, this could be a red flag. This game is waay overhyped. U may still buy it but delayed embargoed reviews? Lol Glad to say i was never pumped for this. I dont hear ND say this. I will just wait till nov 1 for a game developed by perfectionist.

I read some of you saying you hope the chat works in Bf3 and that it played up in BF2 which i can remember,my point is didn't any of you boys who are saying about the chat not working play the BETA? because my chat was working fine in the BETA so i wouldn't of thought it would change. ;-)

If they were perfectionists, they would have fixed the numerous bugs and glitches (and the whole resetting your level to zero thing) in BFBC2: Vietnam by now.

Not to say that DICE doesn't try to make bug-less games and be perfectionists, but if that is their best, I hope they were trying harder on BF3.
