Enterbrain: FFXIII-2 May Not Sell As Well As FFXIII
Final Fantasy XIII ended up moving over 6 million copies. So wouldn't one expect the sequel to sell even more?
It should also help that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be the first game in the franchise to launch simultaneously on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Japan. But Enterbrain president Koichi Hamamura doesn't expect the highly anticipated follow-up to sell more than a million units in Japan in its first year.
Even when only available on the PS3, FFXIII sold 1.5 million copies in its first week. But then again, maybe Hamamura is going by history: FFX-2 didn't quite reach the 2 million mark, after FFX broke that same plateau a couple years earlier. But again, we're looking at multiple platforms here...maybe Hamamura, like other analysts, just doesn't see the weak 360 presence in Japan as any sort of catalyst for higher sales. Or maybe he thinks some of that FFXIII backlash will have an impact on FFXIII-2. That seems logical.
Do you think the sequel will sell as well as the original worldwide?

And that's the real tragedy. Not sure if you are a young gamer (I'm 27), but my first Final Fantasy was II on the SNES(IV now).
Final Fantasy was such a solid franchise and if people missed out on the earlier titles, and just try 13, they missed the golden years, and may not go back and try em out.
Hopefully SquareEnix goes back to basics.

I'm 42 :) but the ps3 is my first playstation. Before that I was a PC gamer and is not custom to the japanese style at all. To me personally, ff was not what I associate with rpg *at all*.
But considering the metascore that game received it's pretty obvious that it's me that's missing something, so I'm not too loud about it. :)

I am hoping this time they will not rely on the datalog to explain the worlds depth. It really needs to reveal itself this time within the cutscenes. From what I have gathered from the previews I have seen, I believe it will.

MS charges devs for using more than one disk and every game just HAS to be identicle on both platforms so devs get to be held back even though the means to do more is right smack dab in front of them. Sad.

Who doesn't remember those great movies in FF7 (Tifas, planetarium, Shinra, etc. Who doesn't remember the opening scene in FF8, or the dancing scene. Who doesn't remember the ships scenes or the last scene at the theater in FF9. Who doesn't remember that classic dancing in the water Yuna scene in FF10 or the marvelous one at the water with Tidus and Yuna. Even the singing one in X-2. In XII there were also great ones spread all game. I mean, come on!!! this are the things this game are based on. The soul of this games, accompanied with great tech obviously.

Prerendered, high quality CGI cutscenes were once Final Fantasy's appeal and edge, now that is gone along with great gameplay. This franchise is dead.

I think that you're thinking of Versus, which is supposed to have such scenes to create battle sequences as complex as those seen in Advent Children. The engine-rendered cutscenes of XIII-2 are solely to keep the 360 version on a single disc, as CGI simply takes up far too much room.
I don't see it as being too much of a negative. I mean, they could push Starcraft II level CGI cinematics and blow pretty much everything else away, or they can do what they are doing. You know what... Take a look at Uncharted 2 (and 3) they use engine-rendered cutscenes, so it'll be no great loss.

"According to director Motomu Toriyama - who was speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu - the sequel features just as much content as XIII, but saves disc space by rendering real-time as opposed to FMV event scenes. This also give the bonus of armour changes showing in these scenes."
I'm just quoting what I read.

FFVIII had a few CG scenes that transitioned to mixing in you in-game engine sprites.. like at the start... you walk with Quistis down the hall, then the camera pans out while you still have full control of your character while CG emerges all around you.
FFVII did the same thing at Mt. Nibel in Nibelheim a couple times.
Of course, most people couldn't do that, either.

FMV is a huge budget and disc space sink, so with S-E losing money this makes sense. And, while FMV was very important to the PS1 and PS2 games, we're kind of past it. The visuals are so good that we don't need them anymore. In that light, FMV is probably the least important part of the game.
Since there's 25 or 50GB to work with on a Blu-Ray, it's possible to give our version lossless, high resolution waveform music and awesome FMV, and the XBOX version lower quality but still awesome media. That's happened in a few other games.
I don't think the disc space is what's made them stray so far form the usual formula. It's design decisions.

FFIV had an airship chase scene or the flying up to the moon.
They aren't hardcore CG, or anything, but they still had cutscenes that didn't feature regular sprites and environments. For the technology, it was about as close as they could get to CG. They still tried!!

I'll probably pick this one up eventually, but it won't be a D1P for me.

I've played nearly every Console RPG out there, since the beginning of Consoles.
Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Shining Force, Phantsy Star etc. were all great series "once", but now most everything has gone Action/Adventure with a "hint" of RPG.
So Sad!!! Even I waited to get FFXIII when it went on sale for $10. And I only played through the beginning, 'cause it stinks.
