Rockstar: So Much About GTA Concerns "The Americana"

More rumors are starting to circulate concerning Grand Theft Auto V and you know, we're just fine with that.

Earlier this year, it was rumored that the fifth installment would be back on the west coast (ala Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas), which may or may not be true. Some long-time franchise fans wanted GTA to go international; there are a ton of great cities out there, after all.

But according to an Entertainment Weekly interview with Rockstar boss Dan Houser, it seems they'll be keeping GTA in the US. When asked if they would go "international" with another installment, House replied:

"We go backwards and forwards on it. There are very interesting crime stories and other stories you can tell about anyplace in the world. Whether that would work with Grand Theft Auto — when so much about Grand Theft Auto is about the Americana, about the American media — is something I’m not sure about."

That sounds like GTA is going to remain in this country. It's also the first time Rockstar has responded to such a question, and it's interesting to see them equate the series with a slice of American life. It actually makes a lot of sense, though, doesn't it? If you really start to think about it, a GTA in another city - as much as I love the idea of London, Hong Kong, or Tokyo - just might feel...weird.

I actually agree with Rockstar on this. Even though I'd love to see another country/culture portrayed in GTA, Rockstar *know* the American culture from the inside. They are a part of it.
If Rockstar as Americans made similar fun of other, foreign countries GTA-style it could soon become uncomfortable.

i know its never gonna happen but i've always wanted GTA Toronto. that be so kool base jumping off the CN tower and landing on the skydome.

The amount of corruption and crime would put Chicago to shame and the natural beauty would just be amazing, never gonna happen but... a Brazilian can dream :)

You can't get your Gangsta on in Europe. They don't even have guns there. We've got the guns. We've got the attitude. Chicago sounds good for a MOB or Gangsta style GTA. New Orleans would be great for a Gangsta style GTA. Total gangsta city. Bring CJ to New Orleans. It's on! Lotta famous rappers from New Orleans could make cameo appearances. New Orleans,Chicago,Detroit,or Dallas. My vote would be for New Orleans or Chicago and a Gangsta style GTA. Chicago makes for a HUGE map. Rockstar likes huge maps.

While America is the place to go if you wanna get shot (joking...well, half :P), you can't completley dimiss Europe; remember what happend in Oslo not so long ago? Here in britain, a couple of months ago, there was some kid who got shot in London, no more than 15, for no reason what so ever (got in the way more than anything). There was also a bizzare one somewhere in Hungary, where someone randomly chopped someones head off with a samurai sword. As you can see...America isn't the only place where crime happens. Not by a LOONG shot.

That's too bad. I only get maybe 70% of the refrences to the american media/politics in GTA games, some I'm completly lost on. I guess afterall, Rockstar ARE an american-based company (mostly), its better to stick to what you know best rather than tread in uncharted territory, especially when your making a multi-million selling franchise. That said, there's only so many jokes you can make of american sterotypes e.g everyone is obese over there, right? :P

Yeah, but can you really see Americans understanding the game if the characters are talking like east end London gangsters? I mean, imagine the dialog from the Sweeney and the Bill blended with the gameplay from GTA. It just doesn't work. Although I'd give just about anything to see the look on American gamer's faces if a police character shouted to his superior in the middle of an action cut scene and shouted; "Gov! Gov! They've got Shooters!"

Haha, get yourself an American and sit them infront of the Getaway: Black Monday. Even I found the dialog (more so the cockney accents) in that laughable!

Though I don't watch it, on the American X-factor, an English judge got kicked off because they couldn't understand her (albeit she does have a strong manchester accent). :P

You would be surprised (perhaps not) by the amount of TV here that probably needs subtitles for the local viewer....LOL.

Then again, they also have to subtitle anything that has cajuns talking, so I guess we should not concern ourselves too much...

It's kind of funny that some cajuns speak English and still sound like they're speaking their own version of the French language. One language they speak very well, that I have no problem understanding, is food. Except for swamp critters, I can't do those.

I dunno bout America being the most gangster country..... wasnt GTA 1 & 2 based in london or some european area?

I think it should be in detroit, fl or back to cali. if done in another country it should be mexico or japan.

If they put GTA in San Diego or a Southwest city they could have some missions in and around the Mexico border. You keep the American feel to the game while opening up an international scope and perspective.

hes right, GTA has always been about poking fun at americans, taking it out of there would be changing the whole point of the game.
id love to see it in another country, but save that for another series.
i cant wait till true crime comes out, antivision were f*cking insane for dropping that!
