Naughty Dog Hopes Tomb Raider Turns Out "Amazing"

When Uncharted: Drake's Fortune arrived back in 2007, many called it a Tomb Raider for a new generation.

Four years later, we consider Naughty Dog's new franchise to be one of the best in the history of the industry, while we await the Tomb Raider reboot, an attempt to rejuvenate an ailing series and character icon.

And while it's likely that Naughty Dog used Lara's past adventures as inspiration for Uncharted, the tables are reversed now and game director Justin Richmond says "it's an honor" to see Crystal Dynamics using Drake's adventures as inspiration.

"Itís an honour, but at the end of the day I just hope that those guys make an awesome game. The reason we make these games is so that we can play them. Iím really interested to play the new Tomb Raider.., weíve always been very open as a studio, go to GDC [Games Developerís Conference] and thereíll be 15 talks about exactly how we made the game. We donít hide that stuff.

And thereís a reason for that, we want to bring the whole industry up and raise the level of the games being made. I think the Tomb Raider guys are doing what they want to do and theyíve made some bold choices with the way theyíve approached the design of Lara. I havenít played it but I hope it comes out really amazing."

As for the Lara redesign, we've already stated our approval, and we wouldn't be surprised if Crystal Dynamics took a few hints from Naughty Dog's playbook. And there's nothing wrong with that, as Richmond says. Here's hoping!

I am really looking forward to this! I really liked Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary, but I felt Underworld could've used some more polish. Not only that, but I'd played Uncharted by then, so Underworld couldn't compare.

I love Lara's new realistic look, and the fact that she's a little more vulnerable and inexperienced this time means that, as players, we can mature and grow our skills with her. I love that!!

If the game is as good as that E3 demo throughout the entire game, I will definitely be preordering this baby!! Here's hoping for a Collector's Edition. :)

Jeez, Naughty Dog is clearly at the top of their game development... game... yet they remain ever-humble and hopeful.

I am not joking, I've recently been taking some Graphic Design and Cinematography classes this semester because, after reading and watching every interview and conference Naughty Dog is involved in, I've been inspired to get into Game Development. I've been suffering from career woes and I finally have something to strive for.

I love the Indiana Jones movies that lent some inspiration to Uncharted, I love the action-adventure genre in video games, and no other company/developer/group of people have contributed to interactive cinematography as much as Naughty Dog has.

With that said, I too am looking forward to the new Tomb Raider next year. Let's just hope by then I'll have time after replays of Uncharted 3 to play it ;)

I know how you feel man, but don't ever let anybody tell you it's too hard to break into or you shouldn't try. I have my own woes but things are looking up, you just got to hang onto the dream through the bullsh*t. If Uncharted inspires you, run with it.

I love the Indiana Jones movies, me and my dad used to watch that movie a thousand times! I could never stop watching them, I've always been a sucker for treasure hunting and exploring places in books, movies, video games. It's just something about them I love, it's hard to explain.

And that's why Uncharted is highly praised for me, I just love exploring and the treasure hunting, it's a big plus for me. :D

But onto the point. StubbornScorpio I'm with World, don't give up no matter what people say!

Thanks. It's not so much other people getting me down, so much as me not having much direction in my life. This is a personal journey, and the experiences that Naughty Dog provides have been a stepping stone for that.

I'm not trying to be "that guy," but when and where did anyone say they're taking inspiration from Uncharted for the new Tomb Raider? I mean, I wouldn't say anything iff I saw the comment and they have every right and reason, but I never saw any comment. I'm sure the guys not that arrogant. But still, anyone have a link or quote?

I don't have the link, but I recall the article clearly. It was acknowledged as an inspiration of sorts but it was some time ago.

My gamer instincts tell me this reboot is going to be very good, not phenomenal but in the high 8s at least. I'm very much looking forward to it myself.

The new Tomb Raider, from what I've seen and read, doesn't seem at all akin to Uncharted. It's more open, subtle and deep, which means that the two will not be competing. If they're taking ND for inspiration, then I'm a little less keen as Uncharted really is THE blockbuster. It's not something that I want to see done on a regular basis.

That being said, I love this quote:
"we want to bring the whole industry up and raise the level of the games being made."

How awesome a goal is that? Imagine if ND could share their knowledge and give every game the brilliant narrative and characters, the graphics, the aural experience, the immersion and engaging nature of the Uncharted series. I wish I could hibernate until. Ten days to the Deception.

I'm hoping for the same thing. Though I don't like the idea to have Lara redone. What was wrong with Underworld's Lara? I think she looks gorgeous in that game. LOl. ;)

Ignitus, I believe one of the reasons for her change is that her character was slightly unrealistic and had a kind of sexual physique. I think the reboot is Crystal Dynamic's way of maturing the series.

Remember when every male/female gamer wanted a topless Laura code? lol I think we've all grown out of that now.........then again

it will.
i cant wait to see more on it, i really like the whole vulnerable scared almost survival horror feel to it.
only thing im worried about is the repetitiveness of the puzzles.
thats something that has really held back and ruined previous TR games, so sort that out and it should be f*cking awesome!

Am I the only one who thinks that it'd be awesome to see a Uncharted/Tomb Raider crossover game made by both of the development teams for the PS3? I mean, Tomb Raider started on the PlayStation... it just makes sense. I think that it could be cool. I would've thought that a crossover wouldn't be possible at one time, but with so many companies crossing over these days, who knows? :P

I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider but I do hope that, despite taking some ideas from Uncharted, Tomb Raider stays Tomb Raider.

I first played the Tomb Raider HD trilogy recently and was blown away by the gameplay. No scripted platforming, great puzzles, great combat, etc. I like how cinematic the new Tomb Raider looks but Crystal Dynamics needs to remember that it's Tomb Raider whereas Uncharted is Uncharted.

Both are amazing series (Uncharted 2 is my favorite game this generation) but both are unique in what they do.

Wow, ND keeps proving to me that they are the best devs this gen. Such humble comments (unlike a bunch of other devs who talk up their game yet can't deliver), and the whole "trying to raise the whole industry to their level" thing is what every good dev should try to do.

And as for Tomb Raider, I am genuinely excited for it. Its probably not gonna be as near-perfect as Uncharted is, but I expect at least an 8.5 for it. Plus, it looks quite unique from any Uncharted (except for the places where they obviously took inspiration, like the "holy sh*t" moments), and I like variety in any genre.

Lara's still no.1 on the "hottest babe in the industry" chart for me. Eat you're hearts out heavy rain and doa girls. It doesn't necessarily take a naked chick to get attention, just a girl that is very independent and knows how to flaunt. Indiana ain't got s**t on Lara, she can monkey climb AND shoot from the hip at the same time. I hope they use the same thing they used in the 3rd birthday like when you get hurt your clothes actually tear too. he he he. There's that perv coming back from the 90's, lol. There's just something about that girl, all dirty and sweaty, yet full of energy and confidence that makes me say, "Gimme, gimme, gimme". Ahem.... the games are also very exiting and memorable too. I could direct anyone through every inch of Lara's mansion without having to be in the same room or over the phone with someone. Plus you can't really go wrong with a good 'ol adventure into treasure buried lands and tombs.
