North Talks Uncharted PS3 Exclusivity, Next-Gen Hopes
Once you play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception on your TV next week, you'll understand why the critics have once again gone nuts for another Naughty Dog masterpiece.
Of course, you have to own a PlayStation 3. This fact means worldwide sales potential is virtually sliced in half, as most big productions these days are multiplatform and release for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. But the developers have made it clear why their vision only works on Sony's platform and now, in a new T3 interview, Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North echoes those sentiments.
"One of my first questions was why isn’t this multiplatform? You’d sell 25 million copies if it was multiplatform. The problem is only the PS3’s processor is powerful enough to be able to handle all the information. Naughty Dog pushes that processor to the break, it pushes the PS3 to its limits. Because they are so passionate about the project, I would certainly hope that in the next generation of consoles that Uncharted would get the nod to continue to push those boundaries."
No, he's not a programmer; we assume he's just repeating what he has heard. As for Uncharted in the next generation (PS4), North said he's "not really privy to that type of information" but if a new machine does come about, he hopes the franchise has an opportunity to once again blow people away. It'd be about taking the Uncharted experience to "another level." ...I'm sorry, but is that possible?

The last Uncharted game we'll see will most likely be a racing game...as there was Crash Team Racing and Jak X.
I wish there was another Uncharted 4...but as my hopes that there will be another Jak (made by Naughty Dog) fell...so will this one. But hey it's alright, Naughty Dog always comes up with some of the best stuff out there, so who's to complain?

I'm not so sure about that. I just don't see them ending Drake's adventures after UC3. Yet I reserve the right to take that statement back after I play the story. ND has let Drake take the genre that Lara Croft once dominated and made it better. I think Uncharted has the same type of longevity potential Tomb Raider had

my hopes for a next gen uncharted would be that they open the game up some. it's just so freaking linear i find myself wanting to scream at times. i must be like my crazy cat becuase i don't like getting herded down a tiny little path with only 1 way to go. i want to love it and i appreciate its quality...but i only end just liking it :(. i feel like i am somehow letting down sony becuase i don't love it. i will go hide in a corner now and await my beating.

Going by what you just said, this should mean there will be an uncharted racer next? No, and this applys to the 'one IP per generation' theory too; though I don't see them making anything other than uncharted this generation, they are hardly gunna stop at three because thats 'what they've always done'. Just saying.
And really, uncharted is the best possible IP for ND - Artists aren't being forced into any particular direction (in a game like Killzone 2, for example, they are forced to make it gritty and nasty looking - beautiful scenary's are a no-no), they are allowed to create what they want, to a point, because uncharted covers both real-life locations and fantasy themes (mainly towards the end of the SP). The directors are happy, they can have a bigger interaction with the player because of the cinematic nature of uncharted, and because the theme of uncharted is so veristile; travel the world to find some mysterical treasure with historical backround, etc. The programmers - well, they have the hard life either way, ND being as ambitous as they are :P
My point is, why would ND want to create anything else? As discussed sometime ago in an article that I forget the name of, people were saying that uncharted can go on forever - and why not? Sure, you might have to replace the voice actors when they get too old - but maybe I'm taking 'forever' a bit out of context... xD
EDIT: ^Looks up at Excelsior1's comment and; 1. Gags him. 2. Gets belt. 3. Locks door.
4. Sets up Uncharted 2 & makes him play it until he loves it.
Hm, I wonder why I brought the belt. Or why I gagged him. And why I locked the door.
>:P

I mean, Sony will surely want their teams of excellence working on new things, but at the same time Uncharted is special, and might well make an excellent launch title Uncharted *4*) for a PS4 in 2013.

@Shadowpal and xombito, "OMG" your both wrong! (hopefully). The Game industry is a whole different machine than it was back then. We simply cannot predict what will come next. Making Uncharted into a kart racer would diminish the franchise. Sony and ND are too smart for that.

And its hard to say that its tradition for them to do a Kart racing game because its only been twice across two different platforms maybe if this was another game on the ps4 and they actually did make make UKR on the ps3 that would make sense but following the track record of ND its not completely out of the relm of possibility but I think its highly unlikely

It does make me wonder if it's all worth it though. It's often said that great devs like ND deserve to be rewarded with sales. What makes them so great though? Is it not the characterizations, their action sequences, their ability to make you care? Because all these things can be done in a multiplat and would certainly be carried over from such talent as ND.
Or is it simply the graphics that make them great? I dare say UC has some of the best graphics and animations of this gen, but could they perhaps "dumb down" the graphics just enough to make the game a multiplat and therefore increase their sales and potential customers? Would the graphics even suffer THAT much?
I can't decide. Are we really supposed to be greedily holding on to exclusives because we don't want "that other console" to get this great game and in the meantime the dev isn't being fully rewarded?
I find this to be a painful conundrum.

ND obviously have artistic integrity and seem to be doing just fine without selling that out.

That's the point I was trying to make when I said "all these things can be done in a multiplat."
@ slugga_status - UC2 has sold close to 5 million. Nolan North seems to think multiplat would bring that number to 25 million. Now I'm not as optimistic as that, but clearly it would be more than "a couple more sales."
@ bigrailer19 - Glad you caught on that my musings were over hypothetical questions.

Plus, you have to consider that ND apparently always wants to make the best product possible, graphically, plot-wise, and gameplay-wise. I don't think they'd let their game go multiplat and lose the graphical fidelity just to make a few million more. They seem to have morals, more so than other devs.
And the fact that they're owned and funded by Sony also has something to do with it.
I do kinda see your point here (for once), but I don't see it as keeping the experience away from others just for better graphics, but more of keeping the experience the best it can possibly be.

The point of the article and many comments here was that the entire package could only be done on the PS3, I don't think that there is another game this generation on another platform that comes close - except Assassin's Creed (perhaps).

It would be nice to see Sony fool everyone at next years E3 with a video of some type of Kart Racer with Drakes voice screaming
"No, no, nonononono!"
"Kitty got wet!"
Only to reveal it's Drake playing a Kart game with Elena.
Shots fire into the apartment, bad guys scream "Their in here playing some stupid kid racing game!"
Elena yells at Drake "I told you we shouldn't have stopped! AND WHY ARE THERE CLOWNS CHASING US!?!?!
Drake: "I HATE CLOWNS!"
Elena: "I KNOW! JUMP!!!!"
Screen goes black. Drake wakes up from a bad dream.
Elena: "Clown's again?"
Drake: "Oh yeah..."
Camera pans away to reveal their in the middle of an unknown ocean/sea resting on a broken plan wing.
My point is an Uncharted Kart Racer will never happen.

I just thought, whats wrong with ND making the kart-racer an extra component in multiplayer? Competitive, Coop & kart-racer. I guess it would be a nice salute to the fans...
Never gunna happen though, as you say. :P

They don't claim that the 360 is better because even they know it isn't.
M$ are the kings of BS PR. Look how they're pimping Kinect.
As usual, your rantings profess the exact opposite of the truth.
