Uncharted 3 vs. Gears 3 Brings Out The Worst In Gamers

Apparently, there will always be a part of me that's embarrassed to be part of the video game culture.

I have not played Gears of War 3 yet. I haven't even had the chance to play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Arnold gave the game a perfect 10), although I will deliver a review of my own later. My intention is to play both, as I've played every entry in both franchises and always emerge more than satisfied.

Now, it's inevitable that two elite third-person shooters will be compared to each other, especially when one is exclusive to the PlayStation 3, and the other is exclusive to the Xbox 360. When done intelligently, this can be interesting. But given the fanboy ravings that dominate every damn "discussion" online, there's very little intelligence to be found. The reason why it's so depressing is because both games are very clearly excellent products that are well worth playing. We should be reveling in that greatness rather than finding another humiliating way to exhibit our lingering adolescent hostility.

It lingers because some of us can't seem to grow up. I do believe Uncharted is the superior series but then again, I think it's superior to everything in the industry right now. I don't play Gears so I can prove to myself that Naughty Dog's games are better. I don't play Epic's awesome games just so I can claim fair-minded objectivity. I really don't have time for such nonsense. I play Gears for the same reason I play Uncharted: to have fun. Last I checked, that's why we partook of this form of entertainment. Why else would we do it?

It's just frustrating to see excellence dissipate in the face of childish, confrontational behavior.

Embarrassed to be a part of the videogame culture? You mean human culture in general.

Let's take a trip to the foundations of every human mind.

Fear: a soul concept to keep organisms away from the dangers of death itself. Designed to maneuver from such stillness, human evolution has managed to escape these levels with ease to a point that it branches into smaller twigs of issue; from pain to the stage of mere discomfort. Mentally this can be a very glitchy issue.

Now the previous paragraph has a point, for the fact that when fanboys are defending their favours and attacking their invaders, they're maneuvering away from their insecurties - a mere tinier smaller degree branched all the way from the root. The problem is that it's a bit of a Catch-22: they escape what opposes their meaning of existence by arguing but in turn generates more fear to dwell on.

Now fear is necessary and unavoidable but it's obvious and apparent that a "fanboy's" fears lead to more unhealthy and insufficient actions.

Now tell me, by acknowledging all this (infact there's no doubt you already knew this - I just want to remind everyone) is there really a point in acknowledging the existence of insecure individuals? They may find out for theirselves one day how fruitless they're being.

To put it bluntly these 2 games are probably my 2 GotY's for this year. They are hard to compare because they both play so differently and they both excel in different areas. I'd label the Uncharted as more of a platformer than a shooter, whereas Gears doesn't even have a jump button! Just started Uncharted 3, but I can tell I'm probably going to like the campaign better than Gears 3. Both are awesome in their own ways, and the two most recent installations in their respective series are the best as well.

Usually people who don't like one or the other are just trying to justify their reason for not owning that particular system. Thats not always the case, but usually is.

My xbot buddy at Gamestop is a very cool guy, though he still is an xbot. Don't get him started about which console is better, because he will get bitter, and lose the natural charisma he has as an individual (even though he confesses that he hardly even plays games anymore, and he just leaves his 360 on to chat with his online crew). He will get all flustered, and rant and rave about how good xbox live is, and utilitarian psn is.

However, even he admits how much better he likes Uncharted than Gears (he's a bit of an anomaly). He describes Gears as "Dirty HD graphics", and Uncharted as "beautiful". He'd rather play BF3 than either, though.

they are both great series. i saw a litlle of gears 3 at my cousin's house i was pretty blown away by it. which is "better"? i don't know or care to be honest. as long as people enjoy the games. that's what really matters. i'm a playstation fan but that does not mean i can't appreciate the quality of the gears series. it's a top notch production.

Wait until you see the level in France. Naughty Dog, besides being unbelievably talented, are inordinately modest, too. Uncharted 3 is at least just as much of a jump from Among Thieves, as U2 is from Drake's fortune, despite ND saying the contrary. It's obvious that ND was just trying to avoid the deleterious consequences of hype.

This has and will always be around. Mario vs Sonic was what it was when I was a kid, and now it's Uncharted vs Gears of War. People will always cling to what they have, not necessarily what's best. This can be seen in all facets of life.

I don't think they should be compared at all. The only thing they have in common is that they use a third person perspective.

P.S. Uncharted is awesome. I'm on chapter 15 and yes it is GOTY.

Off topic, but I really gotta mention this.

Adam Sessler on X-Play gave Uncharted 3 a 4 out of 5. Yes, you saw that right! 4 / 5 for Uncharted 3!!!

You know what his complaint was?

It had all been done before in Uncharted 2!! And Uncharted 2 was surprisingly refreshing while Uncharted 3 is simply more of the same, with tweaks to combat and shooting to make it better.

Shouldn't that mean the game gets a 5 / 5 for being as fantastic as Uncharted 2?!?!?

Sure, he mentioned some animation glitches here and there, he praised many parts for being well done, but overlooked the great parts simply because they were too much like its prequel!!!

And they give Call of Duty games 5 / 5 every damn f***ing time!!!! For doing the same thing!!! But do they complain about W@W, MW2, or Black Ops being too similar to CoD4 MW1?!?! NO!!! Only Uncharted 3 has THAT flaw apparently!!!

The little respect I had for that show and for Adam and Morgan has just plummeted through the floor.

You think that's bad, you should take a glimpse at the AV Club review of the game. They say that UC2 got by on the strength of its narrative alone as the gameplay mechanics were archaic. I'd like to know what the hell that means, considering I still find Uncharted to be extremely novel thanks to the merging of platforming and both gunplay and stealth/melee. The reviewer also complains that the controls don't work properly, citing the example of trying to take cover and rolling into an enemy instead.

It's been like that since the first game. The trick is to double tap the circle button ;).

I don't pay attention to X-Play, but that's a complaint that I'm finding more and more frequently. But, it's a sequel to a game that has created a near-perfect formula. Why change what isn't broken when they'd get shot to hell for changing it if they did?

Reviewers don't want innovation and they don't want things to stay the same. You really can't please anyone :/

I would never say anything against Gears of War just because I never played any of its games. Now as much as I am a big fan of the Uncharted 3 franchise, I would never bother to argue with anyone as to which of the two is the better game.

Why can't we all just be content that both games are actually very good? I've seen excellent reviews for GeOW so that must mean it's a good game. The 360 fans are lucky to have a game of their exclusives roster. To make up for that, we have Uncharted.

It's funny how fanboys are making all this stupid crap talk on the internet while the folks at Naughty Dog and Cliffy B are exchanging praises for each other on Twitter.

Watched the ending of GeoW3, lol this is worst than any ending of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 90's chapter, but of course GeoW players rarely care about the sp.

Gameplay still feels slow and boring to me, too much dudebro imo.

Uncharted isn't my fav series, but I would buy it any day over GeoW, why? because GeoW 3 sucks?... no because it's a very different experience compared with Uncharted 3 and anything GeoW has to offer to me is something I want to avoid.

Unfortunately for yours untruly, I had to delay my purchase of Uncharted 3. I'll get to pick it up Friday when I get paid if I can find a copy. I hope for my sake it isn't very popular where I live, but that's doubtful.

Both games are great. I own both... well, Uncharted 3 is coming out tomorrow here in Australia, but both Gears and Uncharted are excellent games!!

Why argue over it?

More than often, anger and hatred towards something else that contests the thing you like is a sign of ignorance and arrogance. If Gears fans played Uncharted, or if Uncharted fans played Gears, all the way through, you'll find that both are satisfying and highly polished games worthy of our money.

K, this is completely unrelated but I felt like you guys would be the only ones to appreciate my rant. So I bought a 360 when it was on sale for $130, I mean why not. So I upgraded it to 250gb only to find I couldn't put music and movies on it like my ps3. So I said whatever it'll still hold me over when I go to school because my brothers kept the PS3. Well I've f****** had enough. I just got NHL 12 and I was walking around my 80 inch wide room when I bump the 360, to hear the sound of the pathetic system tearing a hole into my game :(. Needless to say I should of never bought it and should of listened to myself when I bashed anyone with a 360. I'm selling that piece of **** to some sorry sap and getting an uncharted ps3 bundle tomorrow. Can't wait!

@slugga-status I think he means you can't sync your 360 with your computer and take the music and movies straight off of it. One way to make sure your 360 doesn't tear up the disc is laying it on it's side. They shouldn't advertise standing it up when a slight bump or some like that will cause it to eat the disc, had the same problem with NHL 11 actually last year.

No, the 360 hardware really is a piece of ****. I've had 4 (all of them broken since then, no longer own one) since xmas 2009, and I'm pretty sure it has eaten every single one of the games I've ever had for it (which admittedly is not many.) I guess that's more likely since I have a 14 year old younger brother, but my PS2 held up for 7 years while he was 5 and 6 running around, and my PS3 is in top shape, even though I've had since before I ever got my first 360.

Here's another story. MvC3 came out on my friends 18th birthday, so he bought the game and we had all our friends go to his house and we were playing it. 30 minutes in, his dad walked through the room and didn't see the xbox, and kicked it a bit. Needless to say, the party ended earlier than anticipated.

Shouldn't be compared either way Gears is dark and littered with chest high walls, Uncharted is colorful and without chest high walls. Depends on what ya like and what system you have.

and that's where the similarities end.

Uncharted has intelligent characters, a compelling storyline, variations in the weapons, and amazing range of colors and locations. It is an amazing game

Gears is roid raging space marines hacking at aliens with under-barrel chainsaws..... Also gray, gray EVERYWHERE!

I guess to each is there own, but the only reason xbot rag on uncharted is because they can't have it.

I've been playing Uncharted for a couple hours (save file says an hour though), I'm 21% through it. At this rate I'll be done in another 4 hours so that's a little upsetting. But otherwise the games absolutely amazing. Graphically ND has set the bar again. Little of topic there, but I don't have much to say about gears.

To Epic's credit, I'll give one thing to Gears 3: the length of the sp campaign. It's clear from the playthough time, that it is the swan song for the franchise, and Epic did their level best to go out with a bang.

I haven't played through Uncharted 3, yet. I've just reached the first fight France. I'm savoring the experience, playing it on hard difficulty, scouring every corner for treasures, while drinking in the breath-taking visuals, music, and sounds. So far, like all previous entries, the production values are at a whole different level from the general industry. Instead of being an imitation of Hollywood, this IS hollywood. However, even though the average summer blockbuster may be only good for a single viewing, the sp campaign of Uncharted have always been good for quite a few playthoughs for me.

Oh I'm absolutely playing the same way you are and on hard difficulty. Taking in everything while sticking pace with the game is the only way to play. I havnt had much luck finding too many treasures, but I'm definitely looking. On the other hand I definitely feel like I'm finding more my frost playthrough than I did UC2 and drakes fortune so...

I love the game so far!

honestly, I do not consider these type of phenomenon that negative, love for the game they love, and attack each other, are just part of normal human emotional behavior which to me, only show one thing, gamers are passionate about what they truly love, which is a very good thing.

Well as a ps3 and 360 owner and yes i have both games, i will say single player wise storywise Uncharted 3 overall hands down. But Multiplayer wise its pretty much even. Online is deep and varied and fun. They both have there own unique charm. If you own either a 360 or ps3 you need to own either game nuff said.

I say let boys be boys. I try to not let it bother me. We all like what we like, and just because of what one source says, that we should feel the need to defend it to death is somewhat absurd. Then again, this is mainly just human nature, I suppose.

As for the games themselves, I've never played the Gears series, but would like to some day. It does look like a great storyline based game, just as Uncharted is. However, I'd have to go with my gut feeling that UC3 is going to take the GOTY crown. This is just my personal opinion, but it's not completely unfounded.

I'm a huge, and I mean utterly huge, Uncharted fan. Been there since the very beginning back in 2007. Having beaten UC3 in 8 hours, day one, it was one heck of a ride that I'll never forget. I still get chills thinking about it. The storyline, graphics, animations, environments, voice acting... All of it. Definitely deserved of a 10/10.

On another note, if you haven't planned on getting the Collector's Edition, you should definitely do so. It's is completely worth that extra bit of money.

Well both are third-person shooter but at it's core, Uncharted is a mixture of adventure, platforming, puzzle and shooter.
While Gears is only a shooter, but that doesn't mean Gears is a worse game.

They're each enjoyable in their own way.

I don't get the comparisons with these two games, they both have TP shooting but that's where the similarities end. One is an adventure/platforming game with a fantastic story and very endearing characters and the other is an on the rails TPS with a weak story and uninteresting characters.

I tried playing Gears 1/2 but I couldn't finish either of them, I can only blast my way through so many tan and grey corridors/environments filled with tan and grey mutant freaks before it gets boring for me real fast. Without a quality story and characters to keep me hooked both games just got boring for me and I lost interest.

Has any of you experienced that? I want to know your experiences before my copy arrives later today. I always play on Hard difficulty, and that is where the problem is most common.

It's those kind of opinions that creates the "let's compare now, U3 VS G3, who is REALLY the best?" kind of articles and arguments.

It's like saying a movie is better than anything else in the movie world, or a given car is superior to anything else on wheels. It's just fantalk!

i'm not so sure about that. one guy claims uc is better then another claims gears is better. they are both opinions but lead to bringing out the worst in gamers when people start arguing about it. opinions might not be the problem but they demonstrate an overall lack of maturity in gamers.

This is something Ben's been calling you out for on regular occasions.

Anyways, I feel like I should be able to state my opinion whenever the hell I want and not get called names. Trying to say, "Well, you saying your opinion is contributing to the problem" is a cop out.

If you want to fan rage on my opinion, that's your problem and the problem of the people that have to listen to you. I'm not going to sensor myself just because some kid will take offense to my personal tastes and preferences.

Ben shouldn't either.

It's the job of this community to silence flame baiters. You should be able to have an intelligent conversation with someone who has a differing opinion to you. If civil discussion runs and hides, like you suggest, just because we're scared of being called names, then the name callers will be the only ones contributing to the discussion.

That was unnecessary Excelsior. Underdog brings up a good point, if you are going to discuss something you should discuss it maturely instead of saying someone rides someones crotch... That's being a bit immature in my book.

The only thing contributing to the problem is the people who can't handle opinions of others and go off on that opinion. It's nothing to get angry about.

I'd rather crotch ride on someone who can take me along for a ride of being 100% correct, than smile and accept a defunct point of view, such as your own, on the basis of "it's just what I think". Well, I don't give a rats butthole, because what you think is factually wrong. (It often is)

I'm guessing no. And the reason? I am, and always will be, more correct, informed, educated, and better looking than you. Not to mention, more athletic.

brings out the best in me!
i f*cking loved gears, one of the best games of the year!
had everything, a good story, cheesy characters, and actual propper gameplay!
that besides the typical hollywood story is what ive always hated about uncharted.
its take cover, pop and shoot, dodge grenade, rinse and repeat.
theres no enemy variety forcing you to change up your gameplay, theres really nothing changing up the pace of the game stopping it from getting repetitive.
gears 3 though its constantly changing because your constantly fighting different enemies, and with each enemy brings a different required fighting style.
you cant just sit and cover camp in gears 3!

no you cant, as i said you cant cover camp in gears 3 otherwise the tickers or the lampent will come and blow you six ways from sunday!
thats why gears is so popular, it actually has enemy variety!
every single goon in uncharted 3 is dealt with the same way, even the heavily armoured goons with shotguns.
changing the weapon and adding armour does not a new enemy type make!

I can't say which is better cause I have never played Gears but I will say I've played UC3 and MAN i'm blown away, I love the story line I love the history how drake and scully met and became friends it's just great. Now to just try the online part :)

I love Gears of War but don't own a X360 anymore. I beat the first installment and really enjoyed it but haven't had a chance to play 2 or 3. Do I want to, yes!! I am not buying a X360 so hopefully some day down the road Epic will get away from M$ and make them multiplatform. The PS3 gives way more than enough to compensate for no Gears of War or Halo.
They are such different games. Uncharted is more a platformer than a shooter. Gears of War is more Sci-Fi than Uncharted. Uncharted has more likable characters and the story in Uncharted is also more robust.
I just cant justify buying a X360 for only Gears of War and Halo.

I haven't played Gears since the first one.

Personally, I don't care which is better anyways. Uncharted is a series I thoroughly enjoy, and it's just plain more my style than Gears. Even if Gears of War was a million times better than Uncharted, I would still prefer Uncharted.

It has nothing to do with it being for xbox, either. God of War 3 is, undoubtedly, one of the best games out there. And I admit it's freaking incredible. But will I ever finish it? Probably not. Because I don't really enjoy it, and I don't relate to the characters very well. Same with Gears.

For example, I will play White Knight Chronicles 30 times over before touching Gears or God of War. Although I maintain WKC is amazing, it's not really of the same technical calibre.

So screw fanboyism. I'm not a fanboy for only playing Uncharted and not Gears. I play it because it's what I want to play. And I would play it even if it wasn't better than Gears.

What more do you want from me?

In fairness, the childish behaviour of fanboys is being fuelled by review sites like Eurogamer and The A.v. Club. They publish poorly written, illogical arguments and seem to underscore great games to garner more hits on their sites.
Let me list some of the scores the A.v Club awarded in recent times:
El Shaddai-A
Geow 3-A
Ratchet and Clank All 4 one-B+
Dead Island-B-
Madden 12-B-
Uncharted 3-C

What they're saying is that Uncharted 3s gameplay is poor and the same as Uncharted 2.
So how can they score Gears and Madden Higher?
I'm no fanboy, but some reviewers just make me so angry that I want to take a bite out of the corner of my laptop with rage and then cry in a ball on the floor like a big child.

To be honest, as I own both Gears 3 and Uncharted 3..I don't see how anybody can compare the two to even make an argument..They are completely different games with completely different feels to them. The only thing they share alike is that they are played from a third person perspective.

Fanboys are idiots to begin with. Uncharted 3 is simply amazing so far. Gears 3 is pure bad-assery.

Why the heck would you compare such different games

but uncharted 3 does deserve its 10/10

The game is absolutely fantastic and graphics are amazing, but the things that put it over the top are things like offline co op offline lan support and no required install

In all honesty, what kind of losers actually get into serious arguments over video game comparisons? It's like the xbox 360 vs ps3 thing, some people got into serious heated arguments over that debate, why not just pick the one you like and play it, no need to downgrade the other option

Wait....who has the movie deal? :p j/k...I enjoy both as I have played gears 3 and Uncharted 3. Gears 3 was the only reason I have not sold my 360 to the lowest bidder and the only reason I fear the RRoD. Uncharted (though only about an hour in) has taken the spot light and will probably keep it since Microsoft still charges just to play online.

* I am a Plus member but that's besides the point...even if i wasn't I could still play online with my PS3.

Being a plus member ha far more benefits than being a live member. So no reason to explain yourself.

One you pay for to play online. The other you pay for to get excellent deals, and discounts, which is in turn completely optional, and in no way hinders the online experience.

People forget that having conversations is also a form of entertainment/pass time. So why not have a intelligent respectful convo? But even in that there is no definite guide lines. It is pretty much whatever both parties feel comfortable with. Also, is conversation and argument one in the same?

Basically my opinion is that it's absolutely fine and humane. I don't find it to bring out the worst in people. Others don't like to be bothered or be apart of it which is fine because it annoys them and they feel as if they are above it or what you said "childish," but I don't see the point in stomping on someone else harmless fun. Especially when it feels respectful and intel to both parties. Which encase fear isn't involved at all in any form or fashion.
