Rockstar: GTAV "Is Another Radical Reinvention"

The debut trailer is here and now, Rockstar has sent out the official announcement.

Rockstar Games "is very proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development." Franchise creator Rockstar North is cranking away on the new installment, and gamers will head to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches. Rockstar is calling this GTA "the largest and most ambitious game" they've ever made. Said Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser:

"Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe. We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."

GTAV will represent "a bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer." The story details are thin right now, but we know it involves the pursuit of cold hard cash in modern-day Southern California. To date, the GTA franchise has sold more than 114 million copies worldwide, and it also helped turn gaming into a legitimate mainstream phenomenon.

Yeah, it's safe to say that we just can't wait for GTAV.

Interesting how he claims this is such a "radical reinvention", still the promo looks very, very "retro gta", back to the roots, both regarding story and graphics.
Still, I totally trust what he says. But what may they have in store for this game that is not to be seen from the footage so far?

Multiple characters with interweaving story lines is what I'm hearing.

... True, but the way the story is presented in that first trailer doesn't indicate anything about how that is implemented - if it is true at all.

The trailer was just very, very "classic gta", but of course - that may very well be fully intentional by Rockstar, with a bomb dropping later.

I love how Rockstar hype their games. Just love it. :)

I am so excited! I read somewhere the game is coming out in May 2012. I think this is the official GTA V fan site http://gtav.com by Rockstar. They have new screenshots of the game posted!! i cant wait until it comes out! I wonder if there will be more than one playable character based on the screenshot. The main character is a wealthy white male, but then in one screenshot it shows the police chasing a black guy in the alley.

I'm literally getting chills thinking about heading back to Los Santos, pulling off bank heists, doing motorcycle tricks off the side of the Vineland Hills, and jacking g*ddamn harrier jets for joy rides. The ONLY thing I'm concerned about here is the release date. I'm sure it's not an accident Rockstar isn't committing to a date yet. Doing open world games right can take a LONG time. But I think I'll lose it if we have to wait until 2013.

I don't doubt Rockstar on their claims of reinventing the series, but I'll believe it when I see it. My gut feeling is there will be a big emphasis on MP co-op, possibly in the same vein as Dark/Demon Souls. Especially if these assumptions of multiple main character's turn out to be true.

I'm actually more excited for this than I thought though. GTA4 really messed things up for me

I am more excited than I thought I would be too! Had this trailer been anything like a gta4 successor it would have been just another trailer for me. But this... I see no sign of gta4 anywhere. And that is a Good Thing in my book. :)

radical reinvention eh? hmm. well i like beamboom got a retro vibe from the trailer. maybe that was by design in an attempt to lure some of the fans back who may not have liked the direction gta4 went.

There is no mention of other mayor cities. I really hope they just want to have something big to gradually increase the hype. I WANT SAN ANDREAS!

If it's modern day I wonder if there will be some cartel interaction. Kind of like a call of juarez that doesn't suck.

Maybe it'll have the ability to play the campaign in an open world/real time like The Agency or whatever that was going to be. Where there'd be more than one character (like you and a friend) playing the 'campaign' and things would just be ever changing and constantly happening?

Does that make any sense? ...sounded better in my head.

Stay Classy PSX...

How are they going to fit this game on a DVD if they make the map as big as San Andreas? Will they have to pare it down to make it fit (i.e. What a lot of gamers think happened with FF XIII)? Although, Skyrim is on one DVD so Bethesda knows how to do it. Maybe R* will utilize some similar wizardry. I cannot fathom a truely open world game on multiple DVDs.

Yeah was just going to ask that, if they're ambitious enough to work on a huge project then they better not hold back on a certain DVD's limitations.

No but how much more space do you think a set of higher definition textures would require? No way it would force the game on two dvds.

The thing that require a lot of disk space is, easily put, pre-rendered scenes. That's what's taking up a lot of space.
Ironically, the smaller, graphics intensive games is therefore more space-demanding than open world games that are easier on the graphics. Cause ingame space in itself doesnt require space on the disk, that space is created inside the console. :) If you catch my drift.

In other words: No cause for worries, no space lost due to the dvd format. I can almost guarantee it.

To me the article is funny. I literally don't believe a word of it, the franchise hasn't been reinvented in 10 years and I don't see them doing it now. They lost me as a fan years ago and I don't think they can ever get me back. It would truly take what he is saying to get me to even consider buying another GTA game.

I bought Red Dead Redemption thinking alright maybe they've learned something in the few years I had been away, only to find out that it was worse than any GTA game in existence(not that all GTAs are bad). I would really like to play a GTA like the old days.

I expected a new GTA to be announce but never expected it to be called GTAV.
For the first time I'm actually pumped up for a GTA game, probably because we haven't had one for the last 3 years and we were showered by GTAs' back in the PS2 days.

But the RAGE engine is looking good, though I hope the PS3 version won't have lower resolution again, that is something Rockstar should have fixed long time ago.

I'm pretty Excited for this game. It seems like I'm in the minority, but I have really enjoyed all the GTA's I've played. The only ones I've missed since GTAIII are Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars. I played through IV several times and still enjoy it. So I'm pretty shure whatever they do with V, it will still be fun.

& what if you dont want a reinvention?
what if you want the GTA that made the series what it is today?
sigh, what is it with every developer these days thinking everyone wants their favourite series to be different?
for f*cks sake can we have 1 popular series brought back how it use to be and not turned on its head ala GTAIV style?
please?????????
soon were going to be racing Ferraris in halo and slicing heads off in mario kart!

Is there going to be multiple playable characters with stories that intertwine? Has anyone ever played The Getaway or The Getaway 2?
