Kmart Sells MW3 Early, Leads To Total eBay Insanity

This picture here proves that Kmart put Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on store shelves well before they were supposed to.

Now you went and done it.

It has led to frenzied bidding on eBay, with the possible culmination being some ardent fan willing to pay a downright silly sum of money to get the game a few days early. That's $1,725, people. The only downside is that Activision hasn't authorized the early selling of MW3 and although Kmart figured out their mistake, a whole lot of people could be playing the new CoD entry this weekend.

And you know, if you are one of the crazies who spent an exorbitant amount of money to play early, it might impact your account, or so says Microsoft in regards to the Xbox 360 version. Well, whatever. The whole thing is just absurd. This isn't a month early. This isn't even a week early. It's days early. It could be counted in hours.

...not sure what your life is like if you're paying seventeen hundred bucks for a video game when it'll be available for sixty in literally four days.

That's what I did when PS3 released.

I camped outside an EB Games overnight to buy my pre-order for a PS3. My friend came with me for fun. He doesn't play games. But I wanted 2 PS3's. (Some dude even thought we were homeless and offered to buy us subway! lol. We declined, of course, saying we just wanted to buy a playstation.)

Anyways, we got our pre-orders in, and I posted my one pre-order on ebay to end a few days before release. Since rumors said there wouldn't be enough for the holidays, I sold my second pre-order for nearly $3 grand! That's $3000. I used the money to fund my $800 60gb phatty, a couple games and controllers, and pay for my text books for the next 2 semesters. (Plus a little extra cash for taking my girlfriend, now wife, out on a few nicer than average dates!)

Still though... for a game... when everyone KNOWS there won't be a shortage... it's a little bit silly.

mm hmm. I wasn't the only one to do it either. Another guy in my dorm did the same thing. Lots of people on EBAY did it. EBAY even made a special rule that in your product picture, you had to show a picture of the sale receipt with your EBAY user name written on a piece of paper in the picture to prove it's your pre-order receipt. Just to avoid scammers.

They took my first posting down and sent me an email detailing what I needed to do. You also couldn't post your pre-order unless you already had an EBAY score over 50 positive feedbacks. No new users could do it.

Ah, I bet you got to write it off, didn't you Ben!

After a long work day, I come to this site and sometimes get a little jealous of your job! lol

By the way, when did you officially start at this site? I'd been reading articles and had subscribed to the newsletter years and years ago, but only started posting about 2 years ago. I never really paid any attention to who the writers were until I became a member of the community in the comments.

lol,

Well, I definitely sold my XBOX360 and games to help fund an engagement ring!

They say it's supposed to cost 3 months wages... Well... I was still a student when I got engaged, so 3 months wages was still nothing. lol

My dad even joked at our wedding during his speech that he knew I was serious when I sold a gaming console!

i know people pimped their ps2's. i have a lot of fond memories of camping out for the ps2's launch at wal mart. they got 22 ps2's and luanched at midnight on oct 26...a a day after my b-day the crowd was pretty rowdy. a lot of people showed up at midnight demanding ps2's and were very upset when they were turned away. the line was huge. at 1 time i counted about 50 people. a lot of people were unable to get a ps2 but i did. a lot of buzz around the ps2's luanch. another thing i remember anout the ps2's luanch is my local city police department was there and actually walked us out to our cars to make sure we were not robbed i guess. pretty intense.

I was working at Best Buy when the PS3 came out. When I got off work two days I walked outside and got in line, and there were already 7 people out there. That night was so cold, but I had a big tent and a propane heater the keep me warm. Totally worth it.

I'd say about 15 of the 22 or so people said they wold sell theirs on eBay.

I was working at circuit city (RIP) when the PS3 released. I remember people camping out in front of the store in tents for days. We only got 6 so there were quite a few upset gamers.

That is bad. THAT IS SO BAD! I mean JESUS! $1,725!? Just...no way. Forget the starving people in Africa, there are some people in serious need of help in developed countrys!

However if this was for Uncharted 3 I could totaly understand it. xD
(Yes, I STILL haven't got it, I'm dying here...)

Some people just buy these games for ridiculous prices as a sport. Just to rub it into people's faces that they are privileged. In this case, spending $1,725 for something that you can't even play online yet on is plain stupid.

they probably would have access to the servers. Reviewers who get the copy early usually do. They might just get their PS3/360 banned by doing so though.

They won't get onto those servers. The publisher/developer has to give you the details (usually with a code of some kind) of how to play online early.

I'm pretty sure the seller was trolled since the winning bidder had a rating of 0 as did a majority of the bids. Also I don't see why anyone would seriously bid on the game since with shipping you'll most likely be getting the game on the day MW3 actually releases.

I'm sure with as adamant as COD fans are, many signed up with eBay just to try n get the game. Not everyone has an eBay account so it's entirely possible, I for one don't.

Some people got screwed over on EBAY with the pre-order sales before PS3 released. So it's entirely possible.

I don't doubt that people bought MW3 off Ebay. I do doubt that it sold for 1700+ to someone with a rating of 0.

That's ridiculous to pay that amount. Are the servers even up? How many people will you be competing against, since it doesn't release until Tuesday. That's why you want it right? To play online? Seriously, seriously, why waist $1,700 when it comes out in less than 5 days. Jeez.

This is some rich kid from Aaron Spelling's or equivalent Hollywood family. I am curious though why he would want it? You cannot go online and level up right? There isn't anyone to play and Activision doesn't have the servers open to the public. They are only open to reviewers/journalists. So, essentially this nimrod paid $1725 to play the SP?! Wow, I know MW SP is good for a MP shooter but not $1725 good! Unreal!

cant believe kmart are doing this still after all the times they have got cought and have been fined!
i mean seriously, dont they give a sh*t?
they should be banned from selling games!

i cant believe someone would pay 1729 bucks to be able to play a game 4 days earlier!
i mean wait 4 days and spend 60 bucks or spend 1729 and play in a few days.
well he has to get it shipped, and in my experience it takes several days for ebay items to be shipped let alone arrived!
so, by the time he receives it it will probably be 1 or less before release.
people are so impulsive!
i always said people have more money then brains, though he did not have to prove it to me!
even if your a billionaire, its just a waste!
give that 1729 to a charity or something, do something useful with it instead of wasting it on getting a game.

I can't wait to see the line-ups for this one Monday night. If you thought the Black Ops line-ups were long, the ones for Modern Warfare 3 will be so long, they will need professional shepherds to herd them into the stores once it's Midnight.
