PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Has Some Power Left To Find

With all this talk about the next generation of consoles, and developers often weighing in on the remaining power of current machines, we figured the question was relevant.

As it turns out, the majority of our readers say the PlayStation 3 still has some power left to locate, and a lot believe developers haven't even begun to push the console just yet. We've heard conflicting things from game makers; most don't really want to see a new machine just yet (primarily because they don't want to have to learn new architecture the minute they get a firm grasp on the PS3). But with rumors of the PS4 swirling and the belief that Microsoft will unveil their new console soon, Sony's next PlayStation may be closer than we all think... Personally, I don't want it any earlier than 2013.

This week, we could ask you about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. But you know, it's on everyone's lips this week; we wanna be different. How's about the other huge title that launches at a bizarre time (Friday)? It's Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and we want to know what you expect: greatest RPG experience of the year? Total disappointment? Just not your cup of tea? Let us know.

But most likely (if 'rumors' are true), devs won't have to learn much of a new architecture for the PS4.

I'm looking forward to the review on this game. I couldn't get into Oblivion, but Skyrim seems different some how. I'm not sure why I'm interested in this game, but I am.

I'm not sure I want to answer this poll, it doesn't have a sort of neutral response for retarded folk, like me.

It is a little different, it's less traditional medieval fantasy and more gritty down to earth kinda stuff.

I love 'The Elder Scrolls' series, but I don't care for the poll options.
I'm confident 'Skyrim' will be one of my favorite video game experiences of the year, but among RPGs alone, it's going against 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution', 'The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings', and even 'Dragon Age II' (which I loved).

dragon age 2 wasn't very good, Deus Ex only had RPG elements. I know nothing of the Witcher. Is it even coming to consoles?

Well, you're free to dislike it, but as I said, I quite enjoyed it.
And I completely disagree about 'Human Revolution.' The only thing that really separates it from other RPGs is that the combat is more 'Metal Gear Solid' than the typical hack and slash. Everything else is pure RPG.

Neither of 'The Witcher' games has been released on consoles, though 'Assassins of Kings' is set to be released on 360 next year.
The first game was supposed to have a console port titled 'Rise of the White Wolf', but it fell thru.
It's really a great game for anyone who enjoys BioWare and/or Bethesda-developed titles, in my opinion.

The WitcherII is coming to the 360. The Witcher 1 and 2 on the PC make for an incredible RPG experience. You can get the first Witcher for under $15.

I remember always looking forward to what was coming next with a new generation of consoles. This really is the first time that most people agree that we can wait on what is in the pipeline. This generation has increasingly produced some of the most visually impressive titles, (and it should at this point), so besides slight bumps in graphics, what is there to look forward to? Graphics used to push new consoles, but I don't think it matters much to consumers anymore, (at least, not as much as it used to).

based on ben's comments i am expecting good things from skyrim, but i am a little apprehensive about getting a bethesda game day1. i will await news of how the ps3 version turns out. i'm eager to learn if bethesda actually did some game testing and debugging with this game. we all know fallout 3 has some serious issues on the ps3 to this very day. will skyrim stumble along at 5ps and force me to rest my ps3 a dozen times when things heat up? i'd like to hope not.

i am definitely getting the mgs collection.

It has some power left but I doubt we'll see much improvment over current games.

But in terms of ps4, heres how I see it

havn't releaseda game for atleast a year or so (or have any recent game announcements)

so if they don't announce something within a year, then I'd bet its safe to assume they are working on a ps4 game, otherwise I hope to see what awesomeness they announce (maybe at e3)

I think Santa Monica are more likely to release the swansong for the PS3, and I think QD might be there with them for that. It'd be more likely to see Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games move onto PS4 projects now.

I'm very interested in Skyrim, but that interest is not without reservations. Morrowind is one of my favourite games ever, but Oblivion just didn't do it for me. It would be fun for awhile, but I'd eventually get frustrated with the level scaling. I know Skyrim will also level scale, but they've said it won't work the same way. Hopefully, it'll be more like Morrowind than Oblivion.

The game does level, but some areas are locked to certain levels, others lock to a level when you first visit it and other areas are populated with creatures on par with you, but also with some weaker. So you can be at Level 32 and still come across a sewer rat... Poor sewer rat. Not sure if that helps any, but yeah.

as i said many times, the key is to make quality gamas, if games all like MGS4, Uncharted 2, 3 etc, then whats the point to change hardware, the problem of today is nothing stay, but ironically, greatest classic is always against the flow of times, so, to me, ps3 or whatever, good for me as long as quality games keep coming out. i dont care the ps4 or wutever comes out of this and when.

Ben if I like Final Fantasies, Fallouts (rpg in general), Demon-Dark Souls, GTA. Will I like Skyrim?? Is just that I'm very short on money now and don't want to waste it... Of course I'll see the review but I want to know asap because I'll get the ps3 bundle with uncharted 3 and have to decide what other game to get. Thanks.

While I obviously haven't played Skyrim yet, the only thing on that list of games (excluding Demon Souls, as i habent played that) that's anywhere close to the older Elder Scrolls is Fallout 3. If you like that game, you'll probably like Skyrim, especially since Bethesda has said it'll be closer to Fallout than Oblivion.

You could try renting it first. It wouldn't cost as much as buying it and it can consolidate YOUR opinion. Just a suggestion. Unless of course, you're like me and it takes three months for the rental shop to get any games and I don't think that we have anything like Gamefly here.

after playing uncharted 3 im even more convinced its tapped out.
i was really expecting better detail in uncharted 3 but everything has a really weird plasticy look to it so it ends up making it look worse!
its really washed out too, its really weird because neither uncharted or uncharted 2 had that problem but this just looks so washed out it really spoils it.

as for skyrim i think were going to end up with another BF3.
everyones putting their eggs in one basket, and i can see the bottom dropping out and we end up with one massive omelet!

Instead of hearing about negatives, or about the games you are disappointed in, let's hear about the games you do like, or at least about the positive experiences that you've had. I mean, there has to be one game from time to time that you do not get disappointed with, right? I'll admit that, at the end of UC3, I was thinking UC2 was definatly the better game. I knew they wouldn't top it, I don't think another game will this generation. Uncharted 3 definatly had the best laughs though.."Stay down...please". hah, laughed my head of at that one.

There should be another option: Among the year's best.

I mean, what may be the best RPG for one person may not be for another. It's the way the world works. It's a day 1 for me though. Won't be able to play it until probably Sunday though. Have to get back home after a night out in the city celebrating my 21st beforehand. (mind you, home is about two and a half hours away from said city, thus presenting the difficulties :D). Back on topic. DAMNIT! No option fits my sentiment.

Oh, and UC3 proved that the PS3 is tapped. Now it's just about getting every game to that level of awesome and optimising for little improvements before Sony busts out a QuadCell for the PS4 :P Just imagine the possibilities O.O

I'm sure Skyrim will be considered great by many, but not by me. It's not my thing at all. I do not like the realistic or gritty RPG. tag me with the JRPG junky tag if you wish, but it is what it is. Personally, I'm finding WKC2 keeps me highly entertained, and have no need of what Skyrim offers.

Alright, so I ordered Skyrim, because I found a nice deal on tha interwebz.
But I will wait for PS3 reviews of the game before I'm actually going to play it, hearing about the bugs in the PS3 version of Oblivion.
The last time I played a multiplat game before reading reviews was Brink and I ended up not being able to return it, because I took the plastic wrap off(how else was I supposed to play it-_-), and sold it for like 25 bucks to my local game store...

I played Oblivion for a couple hours, but it bored me and I kind of lost track of the whole.
Now it just lies dormant inside my laptop, taking up space on my HDD -_-

So, I hope Skyrim will be more up my alley.
From what I have seen it will be. But I won't trust trailers anymore after RDR(which I found very disappointing) and Brink...

Wait... you didn't like Red Dead Redemption? Weird, I was almost instantly hooked, and would spend my days at work thinking about the game until I got home.

How far did you get? What put you off? Just curious.

As for Skyrim, I will say that I am intrigued. Looking forward to reviews but regardless of critical reception my backlog of games makes it a poor choice to purchase at full price right now. By the time I got to it it'd be half price!

I played Oblivion for roughly 18-20 hours before I got sidetracked by some other new release at the time (inFamous I think) and haven't gotten back to it. Was fun, but wish they'd patch it with trophy support, though they said they wouldn't.
