What Game Would Make You Attend A Midnight Launch?

Right now, there are thousands of people around the country, waiting outside a GameStop or other participating retail location, ready to file in and snag their copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shortly after midnight. It's crazy.

Now, this always gets me thinking. Is there any game out there that would make me do such a thing? I mean, we're not talking about a week early; we're literally talking about a few hours, as the stores will be officially open in the morning. Furthermore, one has to assume that if you're waiting outside at midnight, you have no intention of going to school or work the next day, which is just pathetic. If you're doing that, you need to reassess your priorities.

But if there was a game that I desperately wanted, I suppose I might join in on some midnight festivities. But I can't really think of a title that would do this to me...maybe I'm just getting old. I don't consider myself any less of a gamer these days and yet, even if it was a game I knew I'd adore, like Grand Theft Auto V, I'd just get it on launch day. Really, I don't have ADD. I can wait a few hours to play a game. I don't want to take anything away from the hardcore fans (even if they are a tad frightening), but I do have to question incentive and motivation...

Wait, I know the game. A true-blue Final Fantasy VII remake. For the PS3, on Blu-Ray. The same damn game only in glorious HD. Yeah, that would do it. Midnight launch, here I come!

I have a job, so...

Midnight launches are a waste, imo. Even if i did go get a game at midnight i'd be too tired to play it and i'd wait until the next day anyway.

You're crazy man obviously you've never been to a midnight launch: tournaments, food, free stuff, more free stuff, and chill with your friends. Great way to spend a midnight just saying

MODERN WARFARE 3 woooooo!!!

I get almost all my games at midnight at the Walmart down the street. For most launches, there's no traffic in the store and if I'm too tired to play when I get home it's sitting there waiting for me before the stores open and the delivery trucks are running.

Hahah, yeah. I might stay up for a free game too but that would be if I had nothing to do the next day. If it were a work day I'd just end up losing the same amount of money or more in lost hours than I would getting the free game. Also I would look like a retard to my employer and everyone I work with.

If there was ever a midnight lauch for a popular game I like and I were free that night, I would consider going more so for the experience than the actual game.

Ditto my good friend. In fact, I have the 11th - the 15th off in order to savor every gorgeous second. Halo 2 was actually my 1st midnight launch game. It ended up not being worth going for. I think it was also my 1st special edition game. Hey, that's a good question Ben. What was the 1st midnight lauch game? Um, in the US at least.

Why in the world would Jawk get 5 thumbs down for saying Skyward Sword? Is it just becuase it is a Nintendo game or becuase people think there is something wrong with the game? I thought it has been getting good reviews.

Looks at johnld's comment above.

Is it becuase the lack of standard controls? I did not know it lacked standard controls. I guess I can understand some people having a problem with that.

Lol, because they're haters.

In regards to the controls, from what I have read they are quite good and are making some wish more developers would have taken the time to really explore what Wii with Motionplus has to offer. I for one can't wait to try them out. Doesn't bother me one bit that they don't offer standard controls. Skyward Sword is said to control nothing like Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess was just a GameCube port where as Skyward Sword takes full advantage of the Wii Motionplus.

Dare I say it? Ima get more thumbs down for this *snickers* but so far, as cool as Move is, I still don't think it's as good as the Wii's controls. Nintendo was justified in going with their sensor bar design. Metroid Prime compared to Killzone 3 Move, Metroid's controls win by a longshot. Killzone was way too jittery and all over the place. But Move is still young. So well see if it can top the Wii when it comes to performance and playability.

i'm not a hater of legend of zelda, jawk knows that and i believe i let everyone here know that legend of zelda is my #1 franchise of all time. theres a reason why i bought the gamecube version of twilight princess. its because i want to relax when playing my games. i dont like to play a game that i have to swing my arms around the whole time. i have the move and my sister has the wii and i do play games for both. but in my opinion, if you're playing a game as big and popular as zelda, an established franchise, they should let us play it the way we want to and not force motion controls on us. with that, i didnt say i wouldnt play skyward sword. i'm just not as excited about it as previous zelda games. it used to be that i'd buy a nintendo system just to play the new zelda game but this i passed on a new system for myself completely. lucky for me, my brother and sister are also zelda fans so i'll play it when they get the game.

@Jawknee.
The MGS HD collection also includes the MSX Metal Gear games, i don't think that makes a difference though.

I see where you are coming from, i myself don't care much for MGS2 either (although i will probably try and platinum it anyway). Unfortunately for me my PSP's umd drive bit the dust, so i can't play PW on it anymore. And on top of that i was never able to get the second disk for MGS3 subsistance, so i missed out on MG1 & MG2.

If the only game on the collection you really want to play is MGS3 then your probably better off waiting for the 3ds version, they added things like over the shoulder aiming and crouch walking (i wish those where in the HD collection).

The ONLY game I have ever gone to a midnight launch for was Star Wars Battlefront 2 :p. I was still in grade school to lol. Other than that I don't think they are totally worth it. I'd rather just rest up and wait the next day and pick a copy up in the morning. Now a days most stores have newly released games in stock most of the time. I guess some people have the conception that if they don't go to a midnight release for AAA titles such as MW3 they won't get an early copy to play and will have to wait quite some time to get a copy. I got a copy of BF3 limited edition 2 days after its launch. Some of my friends go just for a neat little social outing and get a game only to go back home and have a few good laughs before school starts the same morning.

I stood in line for 4 hours to get Halo 2 at midnight. It wasn't worth it then. Even if the game happened to be real good(well, I didn't think so), it still wouldn't have been worth it.

Anymore, there's just no way I'd risk making myself sick, sleep deprived, or misguided with how I value my time than to wait around until the dead of night just to get a game. A game that has no doubt been pressed and shipped to the tune of a million or more. The supply is definitely rarely an issue to meet the demand as it is.

Consoles, though, I did it for PS2. It was worth it and very exciting. THat just meant a 4 hour wait and supply was extremely limited.. but there's no way I can hack the 24hour+ waits gamers will sacrifice these days. No way, not never.

I was so caught up in waiting for my Uncharted 3 Collector's Edition to arrive from Amazon that I forgot to preorder the Hardened Edition at Gamestop. Had to get the 360 version of from the only company that has it (Gamestop)for $99.99 online only. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a 360 from my cousin who got his after buying a PC.

Gonna be waiting for midnight launch of Assassin's Creed Revelations.

I've been reading this site for a long time now, and usually the articles or opinion pieces are well written and objective. However, calling someone pathetic for attending a midnight launch is pretty shortsighted. I've never taken part in a midnight launch event, but will be doing so for Skyrim. My wife and I spent hundreds of hours over the last few years playing Oblivion, and we knew immediately when the game was announced we would be buying it at a midnight launch. I have three weeks of paid personal days and vacation days at work. So I'm pathetic for having some fun with my wife on a day off?

I didn't mean to say that anyone who attends a midnight launch is pathetic. I just meant that anyone who misses work or school (or ditches other responsibilities) so they can get a game a few hours early has his or her priorities seriously out of whack.

And yes, I do call that pathetic. But there's nothing wrong with hardcore fans planning in advance (taking vacation, for instance) or getting their stuff done ahead of time to take time off and indulge.

*Sigh* unfortunately I just came from the MW3 line because there was a deal at Future Shop for a PS3, Infamous 2, MW3, and a headset for $300. B****in deal, my dad got it for himself. Neither of us care about MW3, but a deal that good you can't pass up. As for what it would take for me to go there myself, it would have to be:
1: Final Fantasy Versus XIII
2: An addition to the LoD universe(see what i did there?)
I can't think of anything else that would make me go "I NEED THIS THE FIRST SECOND POSSIBLE"

And I'm talking $1000 IF they made it even if it just had an x-small t-shirt with just Palmer's face, a single animal cracker that looks like Red XIII, a 4-inch figure of Heidegger that laughs and some contact lenses dipped in toxic waste that's supposed look like Mako eyes; and I would happily wait 24 hours BEFORE the midnight to be the first... and hope that there's no one before than me... just hope...

i would definetly attend a midnight launch for Mass Effect 3, Fallout 4, and Final Fantasy vs 13. i don't see anything pathetic about attending these midnight launches. most of time you know well in advance about these launches and can plan accordingly. you can take a vacation day or trade workdays with a coworker. i missed a workday for the ps2's launch but i told my employer well in advance that i would like that day off. it was not a problem and i just used a vacation day. missing one school day is not going to end the world as long as you don't make a habit of it either. you know try to keep it to 1 or 2 games year.

i must say i have very fond memories of attending the ps2's launch. there was a lot of buzz surrounding the ps2's launch. the crowd was just electric. the crowds can be a lot of when attending midnight launches for games as well. it's a lot of fun interacting with people who share your passion for videogames.

I use to go to madden midnight launches back when I was 16. Haven't been to one lately though.

One game I wish they would make is killer instinct 3, then you would find me waiting outside in a bright colored snuggie lol.

A new Legend of Dragoon game would be about the only thing in the world that could make me even consider a midnight launch.

And it would have to be done right. Either a straight up HD remake, or a new story in the same universe with the SAME gameplay elements.

Suffice it to say... I don't think I'll ever attend a midnight launch.

I usually pre-order the games which i'm really interested in buying, or else i'll buy them on launch day, so no midnight launch for me, unless they have some real good incentives to give

That made me laugh! I read this article's title and immediately thought, "The only thing that would make me do that is a remake of Final Fantasy VII!"
Imagine my surprise when I read the article and you already had that as your punchline!

Speaking of the midnight release of MW3, I just got home from working at GameStop and wow, so many people! Considering my town is pretty small, it's crazy just how many people are getting MW3.

What I learned from this experience is that I'd very much rather be the person waiting for the game, than waiting to give the game out. I think I'll be recovering from this for the next week and a half!

I got a thumbs down?? Is it because I mentioned I work at GameStop?? Oh, I'm sorry. Let me go repent of my evil sinful ways in "deceiving" gamers out of their money and hounding them for a PowerUp card...

I can't imagine doing it ever. For any game. Ever. Simple as that. If I feel like taking a day off to get a game, I'll do it so long as I have another reason to take a day off in most cases, because the boss doesn't seem to care as long as you don't take too many days off. I just don't see the point. Or maybe it's because I just find it almost impossible to get THAT excited about anything. Yeah, I'm not typically an excitable person. Ah well.

If it's a game I'm interested in at all and I'm not doing anything early the following morning I'll show up to a midnight launch. I was there for Halo 3 and Reach, Gears 2 and 3, Ghostbusters, Mortal Kombat, inFamous 2, Batman: Arkham City and there's probably some I've left out. If they had done one for Uncharted 3 I'd have shown up for that as well.

well i went to the mw3 midnight launch! i had a blast! i won posters and t shirts and all kinds of cool stuff, i got free food and had alot of laughs with some old friends and made a few new ones. im kinda getting sick of how some you guys treat the "non-hardcore" gamers on here. if we dont care for turn based rpg's then we arent as hardcore as you? ive been playing since my atari and all the way through to my ps3 and plan on playing alot longer. mw3 is a blast, i play with family from all over the u.s. that id otherwise never hear from, i think thats my favorite thing about it, as far as "twitch" gaming goes i guess im a "twitch gamer" because of that one aspect of my gaming even though i enjoy so many different kinds of games. My point is this: whether "twitch" or "hardcore" or w/e label you wanna put on it, we are all just GAMERS!!!! lets look at it that way instead of looking down on others for their choice of games! sorry to go off but i would think the gaming community would be happy to see where games have gone now rather than hate on them for it!

I briefly considered going to the midnight launch of MW3, but then I realized that I wouldn't have got the money from my job then so I wouldn't be able to pay for it, also, I had school the next day. A game I most certainly will go to the midnight launch of is GTAV, I just can't wait for that.

The last midnight launch I went to was when my roommate took me out so we could get FF13. I was content to get it the next day and not upset my sleep schedule, but he couldn't wait. We both bought a copy. He played a few hours, I just went to bed. We both made it in to work the next day, but he doesn't work a traditional 9-5 job. He starts at noon, and works til 8.

It's fun to be a part of the excited mob for the same reason it's more fun to go to the movies than to watch one by yourself, but mostly I don't care about midnight launches.

I've been to a few over time. Nintendo Wii, Black Ops, GTA IV. I went to the Modern Warfare 3 one last night, as the weather here in Canberra, is horrid right now, and I thought saving myself from one to two hours of trying to sleep through to Humidity would be good. I think the only one I would go for, (and take a day off work) for would be GTA V. I'm so pumped for that right now! :)

I consider these "midnight events" to be more like "release parties" to attend, more than that it's that important to play a game a few hours earlier. You meet&greet fellow gamers who share your interest and get a bit hyped up.

I'd not line up for such an event, I'm too old for that. But if the youngsters wanna go "party" like that, fine with me...

For me it's not a few hours that I have to wait to play. I have a 3 yr old and don't game while he is awake. He isn't taking a lot of naps anymore so I have to go all day until 7:30pm before I can play anything. So getting MW3 at midnight gave me some good time to get to know it. Am I tired right now, yes of course I am, but it was worth it.

To old! I am in my 40s and I am not to old for these events. It was fun and you are right there are a lot of people with your same interests at these events. I have been to MW2, Black Ops and MW3 midnight events. It's fun for me.

I can totally understand it can be fun to be there "when it happens", meeting folks with the same interest as you and so on. Like I said, I consider them to be "release parties" for the ones particularly fan of that title. It's all cool.

Maybe I'll participate if there ever is a midnight party for a BioWare title sometime in the future. :)

I attended the MW3 midnight launch and it was full of less desirables to say the least. However, that doesn't matter when you are able to get a game you really want early. I was up until 2:30am playing and I am glad I bought it because MW3 is the best CoD to date.

hahaha, you went to a call of duty midnight launch, you know the call of duty community. if you were surprised that the people there was less desireables, you shouldve seen it coming. let me guess, xbox and ps3 fanboyism and of course the very first person in line celeberating as he walked out while holding the hardened edition above his head thinking that it was some big accomplishment.

Uncharted 3 made me attend a midnight launch. Fortunately no one was there but still, I wanted that game inside me now! Inside my PS3 I mean! My PS3... sure. Let's go with that,

I almost went last night for Metal Gear Solid HD collection but thought, "You know what? I'm not waiting in line for 3 hours with people grabbing the next Call of Duty."

I agree with other comments though. Final Fantasy VII HD, Jak IV, Legend of Dragoon HD/2, or even (yeah, I know it'll never happen) Dark Cloud 3! Just my two cents.

I've been to the midnight releases of MGS 4, GTA IV, NBA 2k12, Modern Warfare 2, Mortal Kombat, and GoW 3.

I've thought about doing a late night launch a few times, but ultimately I'm like Ben -- I really don't mind waiting until the next day to pick the thing up and start playing. If I were to do one, I'd almost certainly need to take the next day off -- I'm getting older and if I'm staying out till like 1 a.m., and THEN, presumably, going home to play the game for a couple hours, there's no WAY I wanna face the office a few hours later. It's not that I can't tough it out -- it's that doing so wouldn't even be fun for me.

Having said that, I'd make the proper accomodations to handle a FF VII remake launch and, possibly, GTA V. And I have to say, I'm really interested to see what the next God of War game looks like, but I'll wait and see before i start thinking about midnite launch parties :)

I live like 5 mins walk from Game, so don't see this as a bother plus I am up till the early hours anyway normally watching tv downstairs before going to bed. I too work in the mornings just always needed less sleep in the week.

While I'm only a poor college student, so can't even indulge in buying games day 1, never mind at a midnight launch.... :(

But the games that I would make the exception for would be: Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts 3 or a complete remake of Final Fantasy VII; two of which seem to be taking forever to release and another which may just be a dream.....
