Infinity Ward: Industry Benefits If Both MW3 And BF3 Succeed

EA and Activision have been jabbing at each other all year, but now that it comes down to launch time, Infinity Ward says we should focus on the fans.

In speaking to Eurogamer TV, Infinity Ward Executive producer Mark Rubin called all the EA/Activision sniping "silly publisher talk" and said that both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 should succeed. Why? For the betterment of the video game industry, of course. Said Rubin:

"When both games succeed it's better for the industry as a whole. It's not just us - we want the gaming industry to succeed because the better the gaming industry does the better we all do. We root for everybody.

Honestly, it's the fans you want to listen to. They're gamers, they're going to play both games, both games are great. Much respect for everyone involved on the DICE side and I think they feel the same way with us. We're friends with them. It's not what they portray on the EA side."

It's interesting to hear Rubin say gamers will "play both games," because we're seeing a lot of people picking one or the other. Then again, he's probably right: great success for any one game is usually a success for the industry. Unless, of course, you want to make the argument that these Hollywood blockbuster-type games are sort of hindering the progress of innovation and creativity.

Whatever you say, though, you have to admit that MW3 vs. BF3 has been entertaining.

Developers usually respect eachother so I'll buy that. I think once the fanboy rage settles down people who chose one game or the other will relax and wind up with both.

On a side note, the two people I know who went to the midnight launch beat the campaign in 4 hours and 5 hours respectively. Jeez

Yah, I agree!

I remember reading an interview back in 2009 about Naughty Dog; they were asked as to how they were going to handle multiplayer in Uncharted 2, and they responded to that question by saying they approached Infinity Ward and Bungie, going through multiplayer design concepts among other things, and lastly, what makes a good multiplayer tick with its users for months to years on end.

I say they've succeeded :) and I believe that generally, developers themselves get along really well. Two examples I can think of are Epic Games and Insomniac Games, and from what I've seen, Cliff Bleszinski being awesome friends with Hideo Kojima.

It's just the publishers and occasionally, specific people within a game developer that do all the thrash talking and bring about controversy.

I'd buy that too. Activision its probably quite content with the reported 9 million pre-orders anyway. The more revenue the industry creates the more opportunities there are for other developers.

Well yes it's making the gaming industry more popular, but it just is not going in a direction I have interest in. I am more excited for RPG's, which we have debated about all this gen over the lack of RPG's over all. I have no problem with the FPS genre in general, I like games like Bioshock and Restiance which have a strong sense of creativity in their art design. But realistic/military shooters just arent for me.

I would rather prompt a gam like Uncharted forward more, through its cinematic value.

Ironic that you say that about Uncharted. I believe it was on PSXExtreme where I read an article that stated Sony "encouraged" Naughty Dog to develop a more "realistic shooter" type game because of Call of Duty's success on the industry. And thus, the Uncharted franchise was born.

activision has actually handled themselves in a more proffessional matter than ea has. that ea comment where somebody said they hoped cod would rot away at the core and die was just rediculous.

it looks like the clear winner in terms sales as well. 9 million preorders is unbelievable. i also noticed 12 of my friends are on psn playing MW3 as we speak. that is by far the most i have ever noticed playing a single game at once.

Just another two overrated Military First Person Shooter. Mean while as i wait for Skyrim I've saved boat loads of money for skyrim and three other brand new games that ain't Call of Duty or battlefield.

World I know someone whose beat the campaign in under 2 hours on normal. He works in Gamestation finished at 2am got home managed to complete MW3 and get some sleep and get back in this morning for 8.30am.

But my thinking it's got to be only for bragging rights, because I can't comprehend where it would even be even 1-iota of fun just rocket-hurtling yourself through any game.

Hmmm, maybe it's just me, because I like to pace myself through a game, and inhale the whole entertainment value & the full graphical wonders of a game. Oh well, call me crazy

No Biker, I don't think you are crazy that's actually a good thing to do, and I agree. I usually don't like to do speed runs unless I go through the game first while pacing myself when playing, then after do speed runs.

Ive said this earlier, that DICE isn't doing any of the trash talking, but its EA. But EA also accomplished what they wanted, to establish BF3 as legitimate competition. A lot of my buddies who play CoD have asked me questions about BF3, if its better and whatnot. I tell them to give it a try, some have and love it.

not exactly.
well for them it is, but not for us who are sick of playing the same genre every single day!
the more “popular” MW3 and BF3 get the more likely it is publishers will say no we wont release that racer, or that action adventure game, or whatever, will release a war game instead because thats whats selling well.
i dunno about anyone else but ive had enough war games to last me 50 lifetimes!
so no its not better for the industry, its destroying it!
