October NPD: Sales Rise Slightly, Battlefield 3 Tops

After five straight losing months, the video game industry posted its first year-over-year increase in October.

The NPD Group has reported that total industry sales rose 1% (it isn't much, but it's up), as combined sales of console, portable, and PC software, and games hardware and accessories hit $1.08 billion.

Most of the industry's revenue came from software sales, which was also up 1% in a YoY comparison to $649.5 million. Perhaps unsurprisingly, EA's critically acclaimed Battlefield 3 topped the software charts; the shooter sold 2 million units in the US during the game's one and only October week on store shelves (it launched on the 25th). EA recently revealed that worldwide sales for BF3 had hit 5 million, thanks in part to digital PC sales.

The stellar Batman: Arkham City came in a close second, selling 1.5 million copies in North America. NBA 2K12, RAGE, and Just Dance 3 round out the top five, while Dark Souls and Gears of War 3 had respectable showings. In the hardware department, Microsoft retained its lead position with 393,000 Xbox 360 units sold, up 21% year-over-year (likely due to Gears). As usual, Sony did not release sales numbers for the PlayStation 3.

However, here is the monthly statement from SCEA Sr. Director of Corporate Communications Patrick Seybold:

"PlayStation 3 is primed for a great holiday season as this month's NPD report shows. We're seeing increased momentum in our 1st and 3rd-party software sales at retail, which are up 5% over last year, and we're demonstrating the industry's strongest software line up with blockbusters like UNCHARTED 3, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Battlefield 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and new Move titles Everybody Dance and Carnival Island. On the digital front, we are also pleased to report that inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood is the fastest selling PS3 digital game ever launched on PSN."

overall this octobers the best we have had in years so its not surprising to see sales up.
we had lots of shooters, a action adventure RPG, a action game, and a sim racer.
all we needed was a car combat game, and a 2D platformer and you have covered the whole field!
O, and of course a survival horror game but sadly there gone to a better place......

NPD RESULTS US 10/2011 Hardware Sales (year on year change) Source Eurogamer

360: 393k (+20.92%)
3DS: Above 250k
Wii: Under 250k (+7.75%)

Last time I screwed up the year when posting NA sales figures. This time I made sure the numbers are accurate. Eurogamer, Games Radar, CVG, and the Sixth Axis all had the same sales figures.

"Play what you enjoy & enjoy what you play"

Who care who's beating who or who's not beating who, just as long as you're able to enjoy the game you want on the system you want to play it on.

Hell, I'm still enjoying everything all the back from my old Telestar Alpha & Intellivisions consoles, & all the way up to my PS2 & PS3, PSP, Wii & 360.
