Report: New Xbox By End Of 2012, PS4 In The Mix
Ready for the next generation of consoles? Well, it isn't here yet, but it's inevitable.
According to Ubisoft Montreal speaking to Edge, major developers (including Ubisoft and EA) are currently making games for the Xbox 360's successor, with an anticipated late-2012 launch date for the new machine.
Right now, it seems the teams in question are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use various computer parts that match the specs for the new console. The first official development kits are expected to go out by the end of this year. Furthermore, in regards to the PlayStation brand, Edge's report says that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on software for the next console.
Recently, we had heard that some internal Sony studios had already started work on games for the PS4; this new piece of evidence appears to corroborate that rumor. And if all of this is accurate, you can expect 2012 to be a year where we start heavily talking about the next generation.
Get ready.

It makes sense because when I look at a demanding game like GT5 or UC3, with only 512MB (256 VRAM), it can execute all that it did. No PC can do that I don't think? Is it thanks to the PS3's cell? It has like 7,8 cores? Sorry, I'm not a tech guy. I just go by what makes sense to me lol.

2 Gigs should be plenty for any game, ( I know of none that use 1 gig now)
lower ram keeps the cost down
higher bit (256 bit or 512 bit vs a 64 bit pc) basically (sorta in a way) faster transfer rate (so It all doesn't need to be loaded at once)
Plus these aren't Windows PC that have 30 plus background activities running that eat up a few megs a piece.
the amount of ram doesn't have much at all to do with the processor....

Everyone needs to stop forgetting that the reason that Sony lost so much ground was because of the high price point. That and the fact that there wasnt much software to speak of.
The Dreamcast came out a year before PS2 and that was a "headstart" alright. A headstart straight to the grave.
Microsoft has hardly any first party studios capable of producing the quality of Sony's IP's. At this point I see M$ having no choice but to jump the gun again. Sony just has to make sure when its there time again, to give a decent price and good launch library

As for Sega, the industry looked nothing like it does now. Sony's entry into the video game market was the catalyst for all that we have now. Sega made a series of hardware blunders that sealed their own fate. Had they had MS $45 billion in cash on-hand, they would still be in the game.
Sony cannot give MS another year headstart this next go-round. MS has the money and muscle to make Sony pay for coming to the party late.

The Xbox 360 proved to be a very strong contender (and still is) and that's why it won't be until early 2012 that the PS3 will finally pass the 360 in total sold units.
Unless Sony wants to deal with that mess all over again it should release the PS4 very soon after the 720.
Also Sony doesn't have to stop supporting the PS3, it can easily downgrade PS4 games to be playable on the PS3. Microsoft would be smart to do the same thing but they didn't do that for the original Xbox so we'll see.

It will be smart for Sony's PS4 to be backwards compatible considering the fact the PS3 has so many good titles.

First, I want another GoW. GoW3 was great, but I know they could do even better on the second go around. ANd PS2 had 2 GoW's, where the first one launched like year 4 or 5 of it's life cycle. It's too early to migrate.
Second, there needs to be a full-on MGS sequel. Not some off shoot Raiden game, but the real deal.
Oh, and like I posted above, Jak and Daxter. That was one of Sony's best early PS2 games. In fact, I thought it was Sony's best platformer up to that point. The series was successful with great sequels.
And no full on WIpEout game? Like, made from the ground up on PS3 with cockpits and all? I like WipeOut HD, but it was largely the PSP games with a new coat of paint. Where's the true "next-gen" experience?
Anyway, maybe PS4 I suspect is still well over a year, maybe two years away. There's still time.

The Xbox has been holding PS3 back this whole generation of multiplats so I don't mind if the PS3 holds the new Xbox back for a year. Since MS has lost most of their exclusives I don't think they would have a huge lineup to shock the world with at launch anyway. More Halo, maybe Gears, more Forza, another Fable...
I don't want Sony to push anything if they don't have to. Maybe I'm getting old but this gen just seems too brief.

What do I do now? I have 2 PS3's, and to have to purchase a PS4 will be crazy. There is only so much space underneath my TV set :(

I will look at getting a PS4 around 2014/2015. Again though it really depends on how tempting PS4 hardware is...

I mean...if there are new consoles and the gameplay isn't fundamentally different, I don't think I'll be getting one. I still need to round out my GBA collection after all!

That coupled with the fact that Halo 4 is coming out for Holiday 2012 for 360. Why would they release their flagship title for the 360, while launching their new console a month or two later.

no ones ready for it yet.
most developers dont want it, hardware is not ready for it, $ony and M$ are not ready for it they have both lost quite a bit this gen and would want to make it back before transitioning to next.
not to mention customers dont want it.
most people just bought a ps3 within the last 2 years because thats when games finally started coming out for it, and it reached a reasonable price.
now there expected to throw it away for a new system?

Usually people look at what games were released on a platform to figure out whether the platform is being replaced. Wii was declining so rapidly a year ago, people were already betting on a replacement. The 360 this year has clearly been in that territory. With all the studios that sony has working on games, could they be trying to mask that situation for the PS3 so that they actually have the PS4 in the wings for 2012, but are continuing to release PS3 games as if there is nothing new on the horizon? Or could it be that the PS4 is indeed similar enough in architecture to the PS3 that PS3 software will run on it as well and so there is no need to worry about switching to PS4 in the same way that devs had to switch from PS2 to PS3, thus leaving PS2 behind?
Interesting times....again.

What I'm most excited about is Sony working closely with developers on the making of the PS4 and the graphics chip. If it's gonna be that close in architecture to the PS3, then I believe it's going to be an even smoother transition than the PS1 to PS2 days. Even if we don't get good games exactly at launch, we can have good ones very soon after.

I'm all for whatever Sony feels they have to do. My PS3 doesn't necessarily have to be retired even if the PS4 is sitting right next to it.

I'm guessing the Xbox Next will be another overpriced, optional accessory needed, poorly constructed, easy to hack/pirate machine that again forces players to pay for online and listen to mostly racist, sexist teenage boys from the Bible Belt who can't play fair and need stupid coloured avatars in hopes of impressing other adolescent boys. Of course, Microsoft will pay off everybody they need to in order to spread their BS to the idiocracies of the U.S. and U.K., where stupidity is rampant.

Those of you whole believe micro&soft's "sales" numbers crack me up, it's been known for a long time they count "shipment" numbers, not actual store sales numbers like Sony does. If you look at sales starting at launch you'll see the PS3 overtook 360 sales after about a year. micro&soft also counts units shipped to replace crapped out units (NOT ACTUALLY SOLD) AND the repaired units sent out to others, I would like to see the REAL sales numbers for micro&soft....
Oh, and one last thing, game library WAS NOT a factor on the PS3 launch sales, the 360 launched w/ 6 titles w/ another 6 added w/in the first 3 months, the PS3 launched w/ 3 titles w/ another 6 coming in the first 3 months, that's only 3 titles difference after the first 3 months, not that big of a deal, especially if you count all the PS2 games that were released and able to be played on the PS3 in the same time frame, not to mention being able to play about 90% of all PS/PS2 titles at launch... The 2 biggest factors at PS3 launch was it's price point and shortage of units (something that didn't stop Nintendo's from sky rocketing selling) that really held sales back. About the only think Sony needs to do w/ the next gen of console is to keep the price point down, if they can do that and keep the quality of product up then they will be golden.
