Rumor: Retailer Leaks Grand Theft Auto V Launch Date

Within the debut trailer is a hint that tells us Grand Theft Auto V will launch on May 24. And maybe that's close...

A reader has sent us a link to Walmart's listing for the highly anticipated game and as you can see, there's a June 1, 2012 release date.

Other retailers have had summer dates as well, and the latest date we've seen is from retailer Zavvi in the UK, which gave GTAV a November 23 launch date. So at this point, it's difficult to tell when the next GTA installment will arrive, although it seems realistic to assume it'll drop in the second or third quarter. Rockstar and Take-Two may indeed be saving it for a holiday 2012 release; typically, nothing of any interest launches during the summer.

But we'll definitely take June 1, if that's correct. Sounds like a placeholder in the retailer's system, but you never know.

I'd like a May/June release date. They did that with RDR and it sold tons.

After the holiday release schedule we just had, I appreciate it if publishers would space out some of their titles.

No way. Rockstar needs to release Max Payne 3 first. THEN we'll move onto Grand Theft Auto V. We haven't even seen gameplay footage of Max Payne 3 yet it's coming out in March 2012!!

This is a great time to release a game. You can hear the crickets during this time of the year. That is so soon I cannot believe it. Perhaps they got the year wrong and it's suppose to be 2013.

Grand Theft Auto games take time to produce. I'm not sure if the release date will be by summer next year. I'm expecting near the end of the year, or the year after.

When did they start producing the game?

Yes it would be great if they release it around June. That means we don't have to wait THAT long and usually that time of year is not as jam packed with AAA titles.... not saying there aren't any just saying that my wallet can breathe a liitle better during that time....

I know it will NEVER happen but out of curiosity it would be fun to see GTA go up against COD... I know they are complete different games from one another but both are massive sellers. Just wondering if they had to go head to head which one the majority will buy first....

June 1st, 2012 is a Friday so yeah, placeholder. Could be the release date outside the US like in the UK but not here.

May 22nd or 29th is probably most likely IMO, I think that might fit in better with their release schedule and help boost a new fiscal year.

I'm surprised, Ben, that you've so quickly forgotten that 2010's Game of the Year released 18 May. I suppose that's not _quite_ the summer, but it's rather close to June 1. It was also a Rock Star game.
So, while I agree that this is probably a placeholder, one shouldn't discount the possibility that Rock Star may repeat a late-Spring release date.
