Sega Seeks To Reboot One Of Their "Most Beloved IPs?"
When we hear a company - especially a Japanese company - plans to "reimagine" something, we feel a tingle at the base of our spines.
So many things could go horribly wrong. But then again, provided the franchise in question really is in need of a reboot, it might be a good idea... Shall we remain optimistic for now?
According to a Sega of America job listing (as cited by GamerZines), the company is looking for an executive producer who will work on "a high quality product based on a reimagining of one of Sega's most beloved IP's." There are no other details, but you can bet that rampant speculation has already begun. Sega didn't even mention targeted platforms, so we can't really narrow our search, although we might be able to strike Sonic from the list. They just released Sonic Generations, which was a borderline triumphant return to form.
Then again, maybe it was a precursor of things to come. Maybe they're working on a full-fledged 2D Sonic. But that still doesn't seem right...any ideas as to what this "beloved IP" might be? And don't say Shenmue.

I'm afraid of a Virtua Fighter reboot, because they'd probably screw with the hardcore play. The game does need a popularity shot in the arm, however.
They could probably do something cool with Altered Beast or Streets of Rage.
It'd be also cool to see a return to traditional Genesis Phantasy Star games.

I think if they took the series and relaunched it with the same theme, setting, and story,(including the game of "Lucky Hit") while modernizing it's antiquated elements, the reboot would be well appreciated by myself.
But I think this is all wishful thinking, as I believe Sega realized themselves that Shenmue's ambition outstrips how marketable it can be. I remember reading, leading up to Shenmue's launch, Sega realized they would need to sell 2 copies of Shenmue to every Dreamcast owner to even break even on the project (Yeah, someone lost their job I'm sure for ever green lighting the project for DC to begin with).
I suspect, a game of Shenmue's scale outstrips Sega pocket books of today. And, truthfully, Sega of today usually makes sub-quality products, so I doubt in their ability to even make a faithful recreation of the originals.

Altered Beast
Golden Axe
Panzer Dragoon
But the number 1 choice is...........
Phantasy Star!!
Would be great to see a new Phantasy Star that was turned based like Phantasy Star II. PSII is probably my most treasured game of all time. Tied with Zelda Ocarina of Time.

For all you Phantasy Star fans, the first four are available on the Ultimate Genesis Collection. The emulation is really accurate and the games look great in HD...and they're just as hard as ever ;) Plus that Genesis rock is awesome.

Shank was cool, but still not the same as the old school titles.
