Forget MW3 And BF3, RAGE Might Be The Best Of 2011
The best shooter, that is.
While both Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are great, and we definitely love Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, we have to admit that in all fairness, RAGE may be the front-runner for Best Shooter of 2011. Played it yet?
Some critics didn't like the story, while others called it repetitive, neither of which I necessarily agree with. Well, the story really wasn't a high point but due to the structure of that game, which absolutely was not linear and cinematic in style like KZ3 or R3, we didn't really need a compelling narrative. It was all about the gameplay and atmosphere and in our eyes, it totally succeeded on almost every possible level. There's a little too much emphasis on vehicles and driving but besides that, the adventure is an absolute blast.
And for those of you going, "eh, it doesn't really deliver anything new," you have to be careful with that accusation because it can be applied to many of your favorite games. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception didn't really do anything "new," either, and many consider it to be the lead candidate for Game of the Year. In fact, as we haven't seen The Last Guardian yet and Heavy Rain was last year, we don't have a heck of a lot of innovation and originality this year. The best games are simply refinements and improvements on tried-and-true formulas.
Side note- Catherine is a noteworthy exception.
And you know, there's nothing wrong with making something better. It's sort of how any business thrives. In my view, RAGE is just fantastic, and it was what Borderlands should've been. It has that addictive quality that keeps you coming back for more (the RPG style of obtaining and completing quests in a relatively free environment is essential), and the gameplay really couldn't be much better. We also maintain, despite the naysayers that pick at the textures as if it's some deal-breaking mess, that RAGE is the best-looking game of 2011...with the exception of Uncharted 3, of course.
But it's close. There were plenty of great shooters this year. We're not saying RAGE is a definitive winner (note the word "might" in the headline); we just want it to get the attention and respect it so richly deserves.

I'm in.
I've made it all the way down to the morgue so far, but haven't actually gotten inside it yet.
I had to quit at that point cause I was so damned exhausted, that I was starting to see everything in triplicate by then.
Boombeam,
***SPOILER ALERT****
I did it on stealthy, but I still managed to get myself killed 2 times(on one of them, I had the timing wrong of one of the detectives patrolling the hallway, so as I turned the corner to sneak past him him, I wound up surprised to be smack dab in his face....so 1 dead me)

***SPOILER ALERT****
Unless I am horribly mistaken I found another entrance to the Police station, one that made the distance to the goal much shorter and I could easily just exit through there too. At least that's how I remember it. At first I tried the most obvious way but at some point or another all hell broke loose. Then I did it some other way and found that way to be a lot easier.

What I've heard of Rage is that it's less of a shooter and more of an RPG lite, much like the mentioned Borderlands, and even Fallout 3, and even ME/ME2, albeit, less so. I've heard the ending was a let down (though I kinda experienced that with KZ3 and particularly with R3 as it was the end of a 5 year story arch), but the other shooters including even Crysis 2, had stories interesting enough to want to play through further.

Anyways, but I haunt heard much about RAGE except here about how good it is. A lot of what I'm hearing is that it starts great and slowly gets bad. Thats not what I want in a game.
Ben, you saying that Borderlands should have been what RAGE is makes me interested because Borderlands Is one of my favorites. But I think I'd have a hard time agreeing with you based on what I've heard about RAGE. But that's not even important until I play it. Maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas but then again maybe not. I do however want to play it at some point. Maybe after I get Skyrim this week.

Still I completely understand what Ben is saying cause the similarities are *so* apparent. I also understand the references to Fallout that so many reviewers mention.
Also please note, I am a sucker for a good story. Always has been. I don't even *care* that much about the graphics if the story and atmosphere is good enough.
It's just that Rage is on a completely different *planet* when it comes to the graphics. To talk about story with a game like this, who is *all* about the utterly impressive gameplay and environment, well it just is to completely misunderstand the game. It is like complaining about the lack of character creation in Heavy Rain.
I gotta say: You need to play Rage. You just have to SEE it. Really, if you lived in my neighbourhood I'd run over to you right now with my copy.

The only flaws are that the loading times, even after giving up nearly 8 GB 0f space, are still lengthy. Also, while it's easy to find locations, it is sometimes confusing to find where you're supposed to go inside the towns.

Railer, the graphics are good and the gameplay is fun, it just left me wondering what happened to the rest of it. It's as of they made the graphics and gameplay the best they possibly could then just through together a weak story because they had too tie it all together somehow.

It isn't quite THAT extreme, but RAGE just isn't story-driven. You can't knock a game for something it never even tried to do. It had a story, certainly, and it could've been better, but I can't imagine anyone playing it for the sake of the narrative.

I'm just not sold on it yet. I like a good story for sure, and I guess games like BF3, MW3 and KZ3 have good enough stories to keep my mind in the game. If RAGE has that on top of great gameplay and graphics then it's probably a buy for me. But again that'll be after Skyrim.

Heck, imo, even Demon's/Dark Souls suffered a bit for being almost too threadbare despite being a couple of the most atmospheric games of this generation. And truth be told, the only misgivings I had about R3 and KZ3 was that stories were weaker than previous entries.
IMO, if a game isn't a racer, a sports game, a puzzler, or a music game, it's gonna require story, and a good one at that.

I didnt mind that the story was total crap, until the game ended when it seemed like it was actually getting into it. Won't even mention the last fight.
Honestly, gameplay wise if you are talking the complete package, Both BF3 and MW3 are way ahead of this game
It looks good graphically, but what an excessive amount of texture pop in it has.
I think what a lot of gamers, myself included, came away thinking from it was '......wait a minute, whats with the credits rolling? oh thats it?'
If you have the option to rent this, Thats probably ur best bet with this game. the extra sewer missions for buying it new? not really all that game breaking since there are only a couple of missions it brings

I was out of town this weekend, and brought with me my copy of Rage since there was a ps3 where we went and I just had to show that game to them.
When we started playing, I did notice the textures very often go from low, to mid, to finally the high resolution. It could happen on anything, the background, your car, the immediate surroundings, especially when entering a new map somewhere.
I was like,
- "wtf? It wasn't like this back home? Or is it just me noticing better since I am demonstrating it to others?"
Then when I got back home again last night I started the game at my place again, and sure enough: The popins were all gone! I really paid attention and a couple of times I *imagined* there was a small popin of some mountainside in the far background, but that was it.
The game ran silk smooth just like I remembered it, and looked absolutely *stunning* (I got a better TV too so that made it look even better, but that's irrelevant here).
But the moral of this story must be: On a disk heavy game like this, your experience with the game depends heavily on your disk drive.
The drive had been replaced on both ps3 I've tried the game on, but while on my system I got a fairly new disk from a good brand, the other ps3 had a older, and I suspect quite cheap disk installed.
That is the *only* difference between our machines, so that just has to be it.
It might be the disk speed, or the owner had written and deleted a lot of files on the disk so it got fragmented and the game might have had to save the files across the entire disk.
I believe this to be an important experience to notice as it to some degree must be of relevance to *every* hard-disk based game out there. One player may experience more lag than another, and they both may be right.

come on!
so much screen tearing, really low texture resolution, extremely washed out, really low AA, so much pop in im starting to believe my PC has magically turned into a 40 year old phone!
that deserves best looking game of the year!?
crysis 2 looked a thousand times better then RAGE!
think this looks good, go grab the witcher 2 it will make you think you have entered a new millennium.
the witcher 2 did exactly what crysis 2 and RAGE should of done.
it blew everyone out of the park!
id has always released games and has shown what games would look like in years to come.
theres heaps of games out last year, let alone this year that look better then RAGE!
same goes for crysis 2.
best shooter, but definitely not best game.
IF it had looked like a propper id game, IE does what every id game does, give you a glimpse of the future then maybe id say best of the year.
its not though.
thats what disappointed me about RAGE, i still remember picking up doom 3 and just staring at the scenery it was so beautiful!
hell, the f*cking HD mods for doom 3 look better then RAGE!
how does that work?
how can a game released in 2004 and modded in 2011 look better then a game, on a brand new engine?
a id tech 4 game looks better then a id tech 5 game.
what the?

dont need to any more either,id released a patch that lets you choose how many page textures you want.
there not unlocking properly though, with the lowest page texture and highest i get the exact same performance and the game looks exactly the same.
theres a bug in the megatexture tech, john said its driver related shortly after the game came out.
even if you do have the hardware to unlock the 18K pages, even if you do select them, you will still get the standard textures due to a bug not letting them unlock properly.
its not just the texture resolution though, the lighting is really inconsistent, the whole world looks so washed out.
thats my pet gripe with almost every game this gen, everything just looks so washed out!
no matter what i do with my TV settings, it still looks like a painting painted with .1% paint and 99.9% water, just looks crap!
even playing around with the command prompts, adjusting FOV, texture pages, did not really help much.
nice to see the dev console actually available in a PC game for a change, most developers lock it out!
i really hope mods come quick and fast for this, its a prime candidate for mod support.
seeing what the community has done with crysis 2, i mean the DX11 patch crytek released looked awesome, but the updated textures and patches the community brought out made cryteks look like childs play!
shame, skyrim has been out 10 days and it has a million mods for it already!
RAGE has been out for over a month, and nothing really.
:(
oh well, hopefully id will release the source code soon like they did doom 3, then that should help ignite the fire.
what, one can dream cant he?
its so depressing seeing a 2004 game make a 2011 game look like a 1990 game!

The only thing that might make a difference is if one HDD ran at 5400rpms and the other at 7200rpms. Thing is the PS3 was built for a 5400rpm HDD so in the end I'm not sure it would really make a difference.

Have you ever defragged a hard drive on a PC and experienced the difference? It can make a *huge* difference. And one thing is the rpm, another thing is the time the heads need to seek the disk surface (get in position). And the size of the disk matter too - especially with the fat fileformat. There *is* a difference also between disks with the same rpm. Just like most other mechanical things, there are good and bad quality also amongst hard drives.
And I know what I saw: On one of the ps3 there was a good amount of texture popups. On the other it's close to non existent. The difference was so obviously apparent that there's no way I could have been mistaken there.

The problem can not be how the data is handled once it's read off the disk. There you are right, the hardware is 100% equal so how could that be. The whole point is up until it's read. I can't explain it in more detail than that, but I highly suspect the issue here to be more related to defragmentation/full disk than actual native read speed.
Start the game on your ps3 and keep an eye on the hard drive light on the ps3. It lights up the very second you move and stays on continuously while you move. Stop and stand still, and the drive light will wind down and stop too after a short while. Then touch any analogue stick, and it's right back on. This game read files *continuously* when you do something.
I mean, why would I lie about this? What on earth would there be to gain for me from that? I know what I saw here, and this might be of value to be aware of also with other games.

But if that was the case, then why did I notice the pop-ups on the other machine? it's not different areas either, cause I'd only just started on the missions, so I did the exact same on the other machine (started all over, since new install). On the other machine it was really bad, even. I would not be surprised if it turned out to be worse than what you guys experienced, cause it really was not to be ignored.
But I started Rage again just now on my ps3 here at home and I swear by my mothers grave it's *not* anywhere the same.

As for Rage, I have yet to play it, but I don't see what It has to offer that Fallout 3 and Borderlands havent already given... apart from better graphics and animation. These open world wasteland games have become stale the last year or so, I doubt I'll be picking up Rage due to that.
As for MW3 and BF3 once again, not much that really does it for me that I havent seen before. If Uncharted 3 has not much to offer gameplay wise, I don't mind, because the control scheme was so fluent from the first game 4 years ago. As long as the narrative causes for a good set of tension and story you can count me in... when I can afford it :P

I got the game last week and while I had read all the reviews, including Ben where he called the visuals in this game "insane" I were *not* prepared for this. You just have to see it for yourself. Words can really not describe it.
The sky looks photo realistic! No, seriously! It looks like the sky is photoshopped into the rest of the picture. It looks so real it looks almost misplaced in the picture, if you know what I mean. Like a shopped picture.
And forget "detailed textures", the NPCs you talk to physically change facial expressions while talking, expressing everything they say with the appropriate facial expression. They smile, look angry, surprised, sleazy, suspicious... This gives every npc an identity on their own on an *entirely* new level. Every single *finger* on their hands are animated individually, for crying out loud!
This is graphic and animation quality on a level that I have not seen in a game ever before. Ever! This goes way, way beyond just good modelling, nice bitmapping and hi-res textures. This is something completely *new*!
Facial and body animations on this level is something we rarely see even in pre-rendered cut-scenes - and here you get it rendered live ingame as part of the experience while you walk around on a large map! You *have* to see it to believe it!
... And that is the problem this game face: Every reviewer out there tried to tell you this and still, you just will not believe it.
Just like me.

I can not understand how anyone can *not* be impressed by this game.
Earlier you had to either choose an utterly linear, tight quarter game with glittering graphics and long cutscenes where all the expressive stuff took place, or a more open, "real" game (in my opinion) but with lesser graphics. That's been the rule of thumb up until Rage!
Fair enough, the story could have been more than what's offered. Alright, alright. In that sense this is a very traditional shooter. But I don't think it is fair to let that overshadow the incredible work that is on display in this game.
Up until now I've said that Crysis 2 has been the most underrated game of the year.
But seeing the comments on this page here now I suspect I will have to hand that price to Rage instead!

And it's so true, Crysis (both of them, actually) just became better and better. But then again Crysis 2 is my personal "shooter of the year" for this year so far.
Right now I am perhaps a bit blinded by the incredible visuals of Rage. I have just never seen anything like it in a game as "open" as this!
I am totally amazed.

Becauses it's over hyped and I think you're reaching for reasons to claim its so good because you tend to favor multiplats over exclusives.
As Aaron said, "Its not really even as open world as one would think like infamous or red dead redemption. there are some roads, sure. But all they do is connect you to dungeon like areas. Its basically a corridor shooter with an overworld drive-able map in between each area."
With this in mind, it's not that impressive.

Skyrim would be about a 5, I guess. There's a story somewhere but most people aren't gathering their enjoyment from the story, and they don't really care, either.
And in the realm of shooters, well, everything sucks. The Killzone 3 story, while it was the centerpiece, was hardly anything special. MW3 wasn't very good at all. Battlefield 3 was okay. We play games for different reasons. If your only focus is storyline, and that tops your priority list, stop bashing games where it's NOT the priority.
Just stick to what you like and stop acting high and mighty because a game doesn't have the narrative of Heavy Rain.

No, I was totally blown away by it. I never expected it to be this good.
It's not an open world game like those completely open games you mention, no of course not. But it is miles, miles more open with much larger maps and less linear than any other game I can think of with a comparable level of graphics.
Call me easily impressed, but this is my honest opinion.

I should clarify that when I stated sub-eight'ish, more concisely I meant like mid-eights. It's a well put together game without many faults, if any noteworthy ones.
Though, I can't say the game's racing stuff is all that great. Maybe I haven't played enough, and I have played quite a bit of the racing, but it struck me as plain and relatively unremarkable. maybe it's the motorstorm and wipeout fan in me, but rage's racing stuff strikes me as a somewhat vanilla attempt from Id. Maybe the racing gets better and more interesting later on, but for a game that places a large emphasis on racing, i definitely wouldn't want to spend more time with it if it's race component was boxed and sold as a stand alone experience. I sort of wish they just scrapped the racing stuff and fleshed out more of all the other stuff they were doing. I do like the survival characteristic about the game, like preserving ammo and stuff etc. It's gorgeous, too. technically and artistically.

Rage was good but the ending sucked, and I felt a little underwhelmed at times with the shooting. Can't really explain it, but it didn't feel good to me at times. Crysis 2 was good and fun, but its story was pretty generic and the multiplayer was kinda bleh to me. Killzone 3 was fun as hell, but the story was Michael Bay-fare, and its ending was the most abrupt I've seen in years (until Rage came along that is).
I just feel like Resistance 3 has the story and gameplay edge over all of these shooters. Yeah, its graphics weren't as good as all these other shooters I've mentioned (even though they were definitely still great), but I felt like I was taken on a journey that wasn't blatantly teasing a sequel at the end. It felt complete and excellent from start to finish, and that's exactly what I wanted from it. That's also more than I got from these other shooters, no matter how fun they were.
