Will We Ever Let Kojima Spread His Creative Wings?

I'm sure all the hardcore Metal Gear Solid fans will hate me for saying this, but I think it's important. We shouldn't pigeonhole a genius, should we? Does someone like Hideo Kojima deserve to be typecast?

Sure, we got Zone of the Enders but for the most part, he's all about Metal Gear Solid, and the fans fully expect him and his team to deliver continuous sequels. Let's face it; nobody wants MGS to go anywhere. And while Kojima has hinted at his secret "Project Ogre" project, I sort of get the feeling that he's struggling...he would hate to disappoint his fans, but I mean, when you're talking about the death of Snake, you're looking for an out.

He has said numerous times in the past that he desperately wants to get away from MGS and try something new. But his games aren't made overnight. They take time because he's a renowned perfectionist. And did you happen to notice his quote, that eventually, he'd "have" to make an MGS4 sequel? "Have to?" I'm sorry, based on everything I've seen from him over the past year or so, it seems painfully obvious that the master is tired of his beloved MGS franchise.

And you know, visionaries like this guy must feel penned in by the fans. Sure, they want him to experiment but I think they want a new MGS more; I think they'll always want the new MGS more. Something new is just plain tricky; it's unknown, unproven. When we see "Metal Gear Solid," we get excited for very specific reasons. But what if we're sort of demanding that Kojima cater to our taste for familiarity? What if he feels a little like a prisoner; i.e., make this or watch your fans rebel...?

I'd be very interested to see the reaction if Kojima stood up and said: "I'm working on an all-new project and putting Metal Gear Solid to bed. At least for now." I'm just worried people would totally flip out...and I think he's worried about that, too.

There is definitely a certain attachment fans have to great franchises but I'd be damned if something fresh from Kojima wouldn't still be fantastic and a definite boon for the industry. I loved MGS4 but I'd have no problem loosing his MGS shackles to allow him to give us something new. I mean, as long as it still involved sneaking and tons of guns.

I'm not entirely sure most fans are asking for a MGS5. I've read comments and articles from fan sites and dedicated MGS forums and the sentiment seems to be that he should end it.

Some of them say he should of ended the series with MGS2, i personally think that would've been a bad idea.

I'd hate to see the series go, but if kojima wants to end it i would respect his decision.

They are not fans really are they.

I mean a deep fan would want the series to continue forever.

Snake has gone, he is retired, that doesn't mean there can be no other hero.

I mean, Kojima is a genius, how long will it take him to invent a new loveable hero?

After MGS4 the threat of a new metal gear has not totally disappeared. The snakes have, but there will always be a bad guy.

I gotta agree..As much as I love the MG and the MGS series, I don't really think it should continue. Snake's story has been told and his body likely can't take another sneaking mission anyway..

@OPHIDIAN

"They are not fans really are they."

That is a possibility, those guys are on the cook fringe. After reading some of their comments i wondered to myself if they are fans of the series or just fans of one particular game.

I personally don't really want a sequel to MGS4 (although i'd buy it). There is a missing gap between PW and MG1 that a new MGS could fill, or as i suggested below kojima pro could just set up a brand new canon with snake as the main character, something similar to what the Acid games did (except keep the traditional gameplay).

I honestly, wish he would just end the mgs series so he could go on to make an entirely new saga, world, universe, w/e ip he wants to create...as long as he makes a zoe3 first ;)

Of course the guy should try out new things, lingering too much in the MGS franchise may result in ruining it cough final fantasy cough.
And of course noboby will complain if he makes or remakes or whatever the story/games between MGS 1 and Peace Walker...

If it makes money, it isn't going anywhere until it is beaten to death. And that must be sad for Kojima because he wants his baby to stay perfect forever. I'm interested to hear "the truth" about Rising but I have no faith in that game.

I'd like to see him do a JRPG like he was clearly born to do.

I don't want really wanna see MGS go but I just wish Konami would give Kojima a butt load of cash and let him do multiple projects. Which I guess he is with the project ogre thing or whatever.

Kojima is the vice president of konami, i don't think he will leave. On top of that konami owns kojima productions and the MGS & Z.O.E ip's.

I'm all for Kojima pursuing other new game ideas, but please just give us 1 game in the MGS series for each new gaming gen too.

if theres an unknown billionaire somewhere, i dare say make a risky investment on Hideo and Kojima co with no profit in sight and just send them boat loads of cash...your reward?
umm, How about the title of.
'The Real Philosophers Legacy' who supports Hideo with your deep pockets. and in return help create cities, universes, unforgettable characters, etc.

a Hideo Kojima fan can dream huh? lol

I don't really mind as long as it's good.
I'm against another MGS title but I'd still buy it if it's Kojima directing.

Besides, Kojima had a much bigger dream for MGS4 that even the PS3 couldn't handle which I think will be used for future titles, be it MGS or not.

I want him to, damnit! MGS4 was pure quality... the kind that you don't get almost anywhere else, and he's done nothing in four years, except oversee Castlevania and MGS: Rising? Surely there's something else that he isn't telling us.

i do, id much rather see a new IP from him over MGS5, or even ZOE3.
most wont though, they just want to see more of the same out from him.
id love to see him take on a psychological thriller like alan wake, or a murder mystery like heavy rain.
just think he has the imagination and creativity to really do the genres justice.
2 styles of games we dont see anywhere near enough!
LA Noire Kojima style!
now if thats not a game worthy of best game ever created, then nothing is!

My opinion? He must have something good in the works already. MGS takes away a lot of that time, but this man has made it his mission to become a revolutionary force in gaming. His intensity seems to make me feel much of the legacy behind the GT series.

He can move on. I'm sure he already has and done so without burning bridges. The Jobs of gaming... Without all the child labor!

Kojima has already said that prior to MGS 2, 3 and 4. Nobody flips out except his own consciousness when made aware that his development team are useless without him.

Why? if sequels are just as much fun?

Leave the new IPs to other up and coming developers.

It's like Ferrari designing a car which is practically perfect, they modify it to be almost flawless when a customer comes and asks for a completely different machine!

I am completely against this attitude.

In one hand you have Ben saying Squareenix should stick to their known formula (turn based FF) and on the other you have yourself who want companies like Squareenix to completely change direction, ultimately leaving them confused, as Square clearly are right now.

Please don't do this to Kojima Productions too.

because so few have the creative mind of what he does.
so few developers out there have the creativity, and ideas he would put into games.
restricting him to one series is just silly, its like restricting james cameron to only the titanic.
yea it was a cult classic, but theres so few people who have the magic touch, that seem everything they do is just so good.
so restricting them to one series is just stupid!

Ophidian, it's much harder to create a new, truly great and unique IP than it is to make a sequel. This man has proven that he can do just that. So why shackle him to the work of his past?

Regarding Square Enix I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The one that sells is MGS. Still, I would like him to produce a game like Mass Effect with the quality he puts in the MGS series. That could be an awesome game (or series)!

Well Peace Walker was meant to complete the gap from MGS3 - MG1, as it has failed to do so, another MGS is needed... I guess...

But I for one would love to see Kojima work on something new, Metal Gear is one of my favourite gaming franchises, but there really no where else it can go. You can come up with all these little spin off ideas, but overall they wont progress the story. There is no point starting a new story set in the same 'universe as MG, as every time it tires to tie into Metal Gear will just seem cheap, so I for one would like Kojima to work on something fresh.

Well as i said in a previous article if kojima pro does want to continue doing MGS they could just set up a alternate canon, and solid snake could still be the main character. That would allow them to give the fans what they want without over doing the current storyline.

I have to agree with most everyone on here...I would love to see Kojima do something else. Imagine for one second what he may be able to with something he's completely passionate about. I highly doubt its going to be a game that most of us would pass up on. Sure I love MGS but I also know that if the creators heart isnt completely in the next one then the game will only suffer. I kinda hope he says something along the lines of MGS is going on the shelf for the time being.

Metal Gear Solid is my favourite series of all time and I wouldn't trust the series in anyone else's hands but Hideo Kojima's. If the series were to end (which I thought it did with #4, but I guess not), then Kojima could go nuts on new projects. The fact of the matter is, he's the one who keeps returning to MGS and if it's to continue, I hope it's only with him at the helm. That said, we're only speaking in director terms. He's produced a few titles over the last decade. He was a creative consultant on the last Castlevania. He directed a strange Game Boy game where you had to use the sun to beat bad guys. Everyone only focuses on MGS, but he has done other things. It's just that people only pay attention when it's MGS.

Yeah, I'd like to see Kojima work on something else, but I don't think any of his hardcore fans will ever let him get off of this series. Which is sad considering he could be bringing us even more creative and unique experiences and still be changing the industry even without MGS.
