Quantic Dream: Madison Paige Was A "Strong Character"

It's easy to make assumptions and it's even easier to get roped into politically correct arguments.

Madison Paige was one of four main characters in Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain. For our part, she was a great character and one that seemed both realistic and compelling. But of course, there are some who will say she didn't need to be depicted in her underwear, and she didn't need to strip down in the club.

That was one of the topics Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere discussed with Gamasutra during a recent interview. As far as he's concerned, Madison was both a "strong character" and a "nice role."

"She's a strong character, to me. The very first scene, she's fighting against, I think, three guys, if I remember well -- it's in her nightmare, of course. She's quite clever. She is athletic. I think it's quite a nice role."

As for the scene that could potentially involve sexual violence (in the nightclub), that's always tricky for storytellers. Fondaumiere admits that it's a delicate topic but he adds that Quantic Dream isn't "endorsing it in any way." He reminds us that it ends badly for Paco (the club owner) and "at the end you felt proud of Madison."

In regards to the scene where Madison is fighting off intruders in her underwear (it's a dream), the co-CEO says simply- "She was basically in bed - you understanding me? She was basically in bed." And young women typically don't go to bed fully clothed. In the end, it was Quantic Dream's intention to create an authentic female character:

"We wanted to show, at the same time, that the character was strong but also fragile. Not because she's a woman, but that's the characterization of her. And I think she's a central character. If I compare it to other games, I think it's an interesting role for a female character."

She was a great character, very strong but also caring and personally troubled. The fact that she used her sexuality in the club was a decent enough demonstration of her investigative journalistic powers. People got in too much of a huff for her nakedness, it didn't seem necessary to me but it did make for a drama that didn't appear to be attempting to censor anything for the audience which is good.

Madison was a great character. Although I liked playing as Jayden more..Ari was simply bad ass. I can understand the shower seen getting a little uproar but at the same time they showed Ethan in the shower right when you begin the game. People forget that you had the power of "choice" in the club scene.

Why do people get so upset over a naked breast or rear end, when they don't even bat an eyelid over kill-sprees dozens of victims long in games?

Sick, weird people, think that nakedness is worse than violence.

Agreed. America's values just feel very backwards compared to European values.

Sex and nudity is not a big deal in Europe, only if it is depicted in a bad context like exploitation or violence. In America, any nudity is bad, even Janet Jackson's nipple slip caused headlines around the world and America's reaction was even worse!!!!

Oh no!! Think of the children!!! We can't have them exposed to such filth!! Cowboys killing Indians, cops and robbers killing each other, murders on the news, terrorism around the world, footage of Gaddafi being tortured then killed... all perfectly fine to show on TV where little kids can see it all unsupervised.

Boobs? Nipples? Buttocks? HELL NO!! Those things are far too natural and common with everyone to be shown to little children!! (sarcasm)

It truly amazes me that society has become so focused on fighting sex and nudity when violence and gun-related deaths are at an all time high!!

I guess there was some parents that didn't like what there kids were playing this game.

We'll this game showed art and you probably could tell the developer did not want to show his shy/soft side.

Why the hell would their kids be playing this game without their involvement? If ever there was a 'grown up' game, this was/is it. I don't think that protect the children thing is even a part of the discussion here.

"Protect" the children, where did that come from?

"She was basically in bed - you understanding me? She was basically in bed".

Ok, ok, we believe you, Monsieur. But, basically, she was sexy, non? And her pj's, too.

Of the women I've dated in my life time, the only time -most- young women wear pj's, is when they are on their period. Underwear and a shirt is likely the most common bed attire these days. Exceptions on extremely cold winter nights...

Even most dudes wear boxers and some sort of tee or sleeveless to bed these days.

Madison in her undies is not an inaccurate depiction of her character for the sake of sexuality. So long as it fits her character, and that character has a constructive purpose to the narrative, it's all good in my books.

I feel cool because I didn't walk in on the bruised up dad in the shower even though the game lets you. It's choice that makes a game like this powerful. Choices that result in consequences that don't necessarily end the experience but shapes the way you would prefer to experience them. Good stuff.

You can shoot people, but breasts and crotches are blurred. That's why I will always applaud Quantic Dream (and many other's like the Developer's of the "God Of War" series, "The Saboteur", "Dante's Inferno" and "Mafia 2") for going for realism instead of censorship.

Hope the next time they have a female character with longer hair, more attractive.

Other than that this game was unique by itself.

This game was advertised as a Mature game, if you were not "mature" enough to play then why play it at all.

Madison was a very strong character that rounded out the overall story nicely. I never once thought of the shower part as "porn" which by the way can be accessed on the ol' internet without having to deal with the M-sticker.

On a side note, my girl played this game several times and her favorite part was the nightmare. She has never complained about the boobies. She did however want to rip o' boys head of in the club.

I still remember her *small Spoiler* jumping out the apartment when it was on fire and looking at me like a kid who just got their ice cream stolen. She even managed to get Madison killed on the DLC.

i don't get it, show a boob, butt, penis in a game and theres an uproar.
show the same thing in a movie and theres not even a ripple about nude
body parts.
the nudity etc. in heavy rain made the game more reallistic.

ok, not great.
that was one of my gripes with the game, you never really connect with any of the characters besides ethan and his son.
everyone else just takes a back stage role to push the story forward.
feel like stands holding things up, there, but not there.
i wish they stuck with the DLC episodes instead of giving in to $ony and chucking them out for forced move support.
just does not suit the game, the controls are far too inaccurate especially for a gesture context game like this.
in killzone who cares if the controller does not do what you wanted to, you miss one shot big woop!
here you miss one QTE, it could mean your death depending on what difficulty your playing on.
the highway scene with the move was a FREAKING NIGHTMARE!
whatever game they do next, i pray its not a move only game!
that would be the biggest injustice since M$ bought out rare and restricted them to crappy kinect titles!

I have to agree. I played through the game 4 times with the normal controller and then went for a playthrough with Move.

Hated it. Sort of broke the immersion and was not precise enough to make sure you hit all the prompts.

Puzzling as I thought it would be ideal as a Move showcase. I think they over complicated it.

The thing I don't get is, "why in the hell does Madison drive a motorcycle in the rain."

I don't know what the developer was thinking.

Loved the game but hated the freakin tunnel section plus playing as the kid in the building site.

Next time QD tighten things up a bit.
(Still one of my all time favourites though)
