Modern Warfare 3 May Be Stifling Ni No Kuni In Japan
It's happening everywhere. Japan isn't immune any longer.
While the shooters still aren't quite as popular in the Land of the Rising Sun, the lure of Call of Duty is global. And it means that little games like Ni no Kuni can't really compete.
According to Andriasang, first-week sales for Level-5's colorful new RPG came in at 65,000 units, which represents only 40% sell-through of retail stock. At the same time, the best selling game of the week was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which hit 179,000 units sold on the PS3 alone. That's 75% of retail stock, by the way, which means it'll start being sold out soon. For the record, Black Ops sold 125,000 in its first week, and MW2 sold 104,000.
So these days, it's not a good idea to launch a JRPG at the same time as a new CoD...even in Japan.

As it I care? Call of Duty is the most destructive game (to the gamin industry and culture) ever. A great game it may be, but it's also a terrible blight on gaming.

The truth of the matter is that MW3 is the same game people have been playing for years. Same engine and graphics, same controversial segment, same online modes, etc. Yet the sheep don't like it if somebody disses their precious CoD in the same vein that Beliebers hate it when people criticize their God, Justin Bieber.
I'm sure CoD is a good game. It's just that some people have already played it in 2007 and 2009.

Played MW3, finished it, returned it.
Campaign was better than MW2, but the game just felt exactly the same as the last 4 Call of Duties. No point keeping it.
Ni No Kuni sounds interesting though. I haven't played it, but I like Level 5 and all their RPG's. I have no doubt this would be a great game, but I think I'll wait for Ben's review.

MW3 is topping *every* sales charts in every country across the entire planet - why is it seemingly so surprising that it also includes Japan? Is Japan a country where no FPS has managed to sell until now?
And how is the sales of mw3 related to Ni No Kuni? I mean - MW3 has outsold every single other western title too? So what? Should we say "Skyrim deserves better than this", "Deus Ex deserves better than this", "<insert your western title here> deserves better than this", etc? I don't get it.
If we look at the numbers, Ni No Kuni sold 65k while mw3 sold 179k. That's 2.7 times more than Ni No Kuni.
If we translate that to the US sales this is the equivalent of a first week sale for any given title of 4.4 million compared to MW3's 12 million. 4.4 million! That's hardly a flop in my book?
What *is* the fuzz here?

Must have impacted sales in a negative way.
