SCEA: Strong PS3 And Software Sales For Black Friday
Sony doesn't report specific sales numbers to the NPD anymore, so it can be difficult to gauge current statistics for hardware and software.
But according to Sony, the PlayStation 3 did well over the Black Friday weekend; the first official holiday shopping weekend according to many. An SCEA representative told IndustryGamers that sales for both the console and software were strong. Bundle deals helped, too, apparently.
"Consumer demand for the PlayStation 3 system, peripherals and software was very strong during the Black Friday weekend. Gamers were quick to recognize the incredible value of the PS3 with its free access to PlayStation Network, Blu-ray capabilities, and the industry's best lineup of new titles, including the critically acclaimed Uncharted 3."
As usual, though, no specific numbers were reported. If you're wondering, at last count, the PS3 had hauled down around 58 million in worldwide sales, which is only about four million behind its primary competition, the Xbox 360. Now, you can feel free to argue shipped and sold numbers if you like, but don't forget that the PS3 launched one year after the 360. When gauging popularity this generation, that's significant.

We saw that during the PS2 days. The fact that the Xbox was more powerful than the PS2 or Gamecube didn't matter. What mattered was who got the biggest numbers overall. Thus the PS2 got all the support.
The numbers also have an influence on consumers. Who will always go for the console that sells more.
So what the fanboys do with these numbers is irrelevant. Is how the media handles them and the effect it has on consumers and game companies.

Proof that Microsoft over-ships to make their numbers look better? If you have a bargain bin in your neighborood, take a peak inside... mostly 360 games isn't it? The evidence is piling up.

Nintendo did that too, but they only sold 500,000 units of the Wii in two days. Which they claim was a record for the Wii.
Thus the 360 actually is setting records that not even the Wii could match even back in its fad days.
Its official... the 360 is the mainstream console of choice.

3DS: Above 250k
Wii: Under 250k(+7.75%)
PS3: Under 245k(-2%)

I triple checked these numbers. CVG, and Games Radar reported the same thing. I know it is November's numbers but it shows these numbers are pretty easily come by. Gives you an idea of NA is shaping up.
Maybe Beamboom can answer this. Is there anything similar to the NPD in Europe that tracks console sales?
