Fan Tries FFVII Remake With Unreal Engine...We Ache

It's not exactly professional but for an amateur fan, it's pretty damn impressive...and it really does make us ache.

It makes us ache because we know it could work. We're not sure we would've gone with the first-person movement viewpoint and obviously, the animations need a little help, but man...just imagine. Just imagine.

First, check out the website, and then watch some footage.

Yes, we know Tifa wasn't part of that first battle with Cloud and the soldiers, but so what? This attempt is fantastic; I love it, because it proves that it can't be that impossible to put a fresh coat of gloss on FFVII, provided there's a decent team handling the overhaul. Props to the dedicated fan who's taking a crack at this and oh, Square Enix...?

Funny that he doesn't seem to know how to play his own game. Probably went with first person because that's the easiest thing to do.

Edit: They need to change out Square-Enix from the special thanks and put in Squaresoft.

Can I throw money at him to help him finish the game?

A fan, which probably has limited resources, did this much on a game that could take "years to make" by a company that has a TON of professionals and millions (billions?) of dollars???

That was very interesting. Like you mentioned Ben, it can be done. Whoever says it can't is just making excuses.

As nice as this is I hope the actual remake (I keep hoping) will look better and more Final Fantasy-like.

I think the only way we'll ever see it, is if something like this happens. A group of fans (because Square Enix will be making FPS games) will get together and remake it. Might take a few years, but it will happen damnit! I'll help out! I can code and 3-D model.

I loved how the fight animations were choppy like the original. I'm not sure if that was done intentionally as a style choice, or just do to lack of time/resources, but it really made it feel more like a remake.

I noticed he kept the original music too. Now I really want to find MIDI files of the soundtrack, and replace the generic sounds with orchestral samples to make it sound more like an actual recording (I've actually done this with Led Zeppelin MIDI.) It's the musical equivalent of overhauling the graphics.

That certainly is an amazing fan attempt. I wouldn't mind trying to get into FFVII with a remake, but we all know it wouldn't be up to par with SE going in and trashing the whole thing.

I'd meant to post this comment in an earlier article about changing the FFVII remake around too much: this makes me worry about how they'll handle the FFX HD remake. I certainly hope they wouldn't mess with that one, considering it's my favorite next to FFVIII... SE, God help you if you mess up FFX...

I don't think they'll mess with FFX... too much work needs to be done; more than a shiny coat of glossy HD...

On the other hand, FFVII needs to be remade from the ground up and they said they could get REAL ITCHY when re-doing things once again... and if they happen to change something for the worse, I'll just have to learn how to make an electrified chainsaw...

I almost wouldn't even care if they changed it up a bit. As far as I'm concerned, I still have the original black label disc and PSN download. As long as the gameplay is moderately similar with the same story (even if they change the dialogue, as that wouldn't be all bad.... "All right everyone.... let's mosey!" <--- needs to be edited.)

I just really wants some high-def Aerith to fall in love with.

No way "Let's Mosey" was perfect, but a lot of the dialogue does need to be fixed as it is often a lot of bad translation or just too plain.

I remember one conversation on the Highwind, my dad was watching me play. (This was back in high school, obviously) I hadn't really thought too much about the dialogue because I always sort of filled in the blanks and just assumed I knew what they meant.

But he did make a comment about the dialogue that stuck with me.... "Boy... they aren't the deepest thinkers in the world, are they?"

He kinda has a point. lol

Ahh, that music brings back so many memories. I would love to hear that music performed by a full scale orchestra. As for the rest. It's pretty neat, but FF done in in a first person point of view is almost blasphemus. Other than that it's not bad.

Sure, impressive. But FFVll is a perfect memory and i would like it to stay that way.

However, i ache for the new RPGs incoming that look like they can deliver.

I ache for a NEW all time memory with Ni No Kuni.

This was done by using udk kit. I think if it was done by cryengine 3 kit it would have looked much better. incredible work here anyway.

You know, it's already possible to play FFVII in HD. There's a really big fan community and they've modded the PC version to death. New sound and video drivers, brand-new re-rendered backgrounds and character models...the whole thing. It doesn't look quite like a ps3 game but it is very nice.

I love when fans do these kinds of things. I gotta say I did get butterflies in my stomach as the music started playing because I wasn't sure what to expect.

And the first person part didn't bother me at all, I wouldn't expect SE to go that route but for whatever reason this fan chose to do it that way. And honestly more power to him, if someone doesn't like it go make a better version.

Not sure I like the first person and jumping around, but that was probably the easiest way to do it in this case. Makes me want a remake even more. I would soooo love to have it. I just wish SE would take the time to do it. It'd probably crush the sales numbers of their current projects.

Square said something about not being able to do a remake because of all the buildings in 3D would take too long to create. But, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Resident Evil...well, most games now have lots of 3D buildings and open world traveling, so yeah. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Besides if they want to stick to the story, Sephiroth claims, "I will never be a memory". Square should hire this guy so he can finish the game bc he's better than the whole company of Square it seems. With some smoothing and a decent HUD, I don't think it being 1st person would be bad at all. Give it the texture of FFVII:AC and you got a remake of a game that out did all the rest in it's time that may happen again.
