Warner Bros. On Superhero Games: "Forget The Movies"

Well, it seems a game publisher finally figured it out: mediocre games based on movies just don't cut it anymore.

For a long while, superhero video games - specifically, games based on movies - were average at best. But then along came Rocksteady, Warner Bros., and Batman: Arkham Asylum and everything changed. The publisher has certainly learned its lesson.

During an interview with Canadian Business, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment boss Martin Carrier said simply- "Forget the movies." He says they're not satisfied with sub-par superhero games any longer, and developers have to have time to focus on the quality of a product. WB's Reid Schneider added that gamers have no tolerance for low-quality titles, either:

"If you just look at the market, the number of those and the money they’re bringing in is dwindling.,. There’s a real stratification of games where only the really high-quality games with mass market appeal are making money. That whole middle layer, where there were movie games or cash-ins--that market is gone."

You know, sometimes it's a little surprising how long it takes for big companies to figure stuff out...any gamer could've told you the facts years ago. But hey, at least game producers see the light now! Yeah, just forget the movies. Good call.

I still want to see a Batman game with the Knightfall storyline where Bane is done the way he should be. I don't know why they made him a damn luchador in most iterations & a Brain dead idiot in Batman & Robin. I don't see the The Dark Knight Rises putting him in the best light either. He's cold, calculating, & twisted. The epicness of it all still gives me goosebumps. Death of Superman should be done right for once as well. That animated movie was a tragedy to be avoided at all costs. The fan video of the Knightfall trailer is pretty awesome considering it was done by one person. Bottom line is that the 90's kicked ass no matter how you look at it.

Actually I read an article where Nolan kinda describes his version of Bane that sounds somewhat similar to your description of him so you may just get your wish.

I hope so. For some reason though, I just don't see Christian Bale getting beaten up that badly by him, fitting in Catwoman, & whatever else is in store for Bruce in a 2 hr flick. There needs to be either a game or a series of no less than 3 animated movies in order to depict Bane as the mastermind that he really was. This is the guy that saw Bruce through a set of binoculars & was like "this guy's Batman". Then the bastard proceeds to break every prisoner out of Arkham to break him mentally until he breaks him physically. I can picture the Azrael/Bane fight in my head so perfectly as well. Throw in an epic soundtrack & you have a great seller that any Batman fan would gobble up.

I think the guy is actually wrong in this article. Movie based games aren't a bad idea. It's trying to release them along side the movies that makes them bad. If they would take their time and make it a good game before releasing it then it would sell regardless of what it is based on. This just shows me the industry is slow to realize that quality in many cases will result in higher sales, though not always. Valkyria Chronicles is a game that is of the highest quality and yet its sales were meager(which still saddens me).

Yes, but they(SEGA) made Valkyria Chronicles into a psp game after the first one. Gamers wanted a full Ps3 retail game, not psp one for the second game. Which definitely hurt that series. I know wanted another Ps3 game after the first game.

sweet, DC FINALLY gets the games it deserves!
i wish we could have a batman begins HD remake, that was by far the best batman game ever made!
then after that release a new game styled on the same gameplay as that.
the arkham series has been great, but it has not captured the essance of batman.
they have always been about the combat, where batman is not about the combat.
hes a detective, he does not jump down and beat the living snot out of his enemies.
he sits back and lays traps for them.
thats one thing i hated about arkham city almost every gadget only stuns a enemy, theres really none you can use to lure a enemy into a trap and knock him out or something.
the gadgets are far more focused on combat instead of stealth.
they also dont have enough detective work, i mean come on the dark night is suppose to be the best detective in the world!
dont you think turning on special vision and following footsteps is a bit crude and insulting to the worlds best detective!?
come on, i think batman can handle more complex tasks then that!
thats why i loved batman begins, simply because it makes you feel like batman!
your sitting in the corner watching your prey luring them into traps.
not leaping down and kicking the royal crap out of them!
