Capcom: Mega Man Remains A "Key Brand" For Us

Some long-time fans are asking: "Hey...where'd Mega Man go?"

After franchise producer Keiji Inafune left Capcom, both Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3 were canceled, and the iconic character never made the rosters for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. So the fans are understandably worried.

But there's good news: according to what Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson told Game Informer, the company is committed to keeping the Blue Bomber around for quite some time. Said Svensson:

"Change has been a constant during my six years at Capcom (vastly for the positive) but I want to be crystal clear on this point. Mega Man is a key brand for Capcom and will remain so. I don't have any products we've announced publicly that I can point to and say 'see, I told you' but there are 'top men' ('top men'? 'Yes, top men') within Capcom thinking about the future of the brand and where it's going. We will have official announcements in due course."

Svensson does admit that Capcom has had to make some decisions "that don't make sense to the community," and the resulting fallout is "regrettable." The bottom line is that it will take time to rebuild the good name of Mega Man, and regain the trust of those hardcore followers. Finished Svensson:

"Unfortunately, in this situation, there is no panacea. It's going to take time to rebuild those bridges. Product cycles are long and it'll be a little while until fans can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And the last thing I want to do is prematurely announce something in the name of sating the fans that gets canceled or redirected later, thereby creating an even larger wound. I can only ask for people's patience."

Well, we agree that you should never completely abandon the characters that helped push this industry forward, even during the darkest times. We just hope Capcom does it faithfully and respectfully...don't go ruining our beloved series. If you're going to do that, just let the Blue Bomber rest in peace, please.

Ben, I'm really really glad you used MegaMan X as the picture for this article.
That guy really needs his comeback.

I'm hoping for a MEgaMan X reboot.

http://youtu.be/tk4Na8eVMxw been waiting for this for a long time, apparently the creator bailed out of capcom, so this will never be seen.

Glad to hear this. I honestly think they got it right with the Mega Man X series. Always wondered what happened. Good news though. Just imagine what would become of Capcom if they ended Street Fighter? ((shivers))

I have Mega Man X through X6 and they're all incredible. I also like the original series and even the Battle Network games were okay, but X6 is probably the best Mega Man game out there so far. It really had everything! The series had great music and level design...I'm hoping for a 2D X9 with an even better story, no voice acting (lol), and much larger, longer, complex levels - and more of them! It'd love to see the old-school gameplay return with enough content to make it a retail purchase.

Perhaps 3rd person would be a bad idea.

And I agree that it's not as good as the side scrolling, but they did execute it well.

As it should be. I knew about Megaman long before my current stint in gaming thanks to the cartoons, and it was that which prompted me to D/L the roms for an emulator back in the day. I'd be keen for a current gen revival, for sure. I wonder what it'll be though. The sidescroller is reserved for D/L only, but a semi-open world action/adventure could work. Whatever. Am interested.

Mega Man X8 ended with a main character seriously wounded. Just before the credits roll, it shows something glow in their crystal... Left X8 open.... and they never came back to finish it.

They should.

All this talk of Mega Man X games makes me think Capcom should somehow release a Megaman X collection. Unfortunately I've only played MMX through MMX4. Did it only go up until 8??

Yeah. That collection is 9.50 on Amazon if you want it for PS2...somehow it's way more expensive on Gamecube.
