Naughty Dog Unleashes The Last Of Us: ...Holy Crap
Update: Here's a snippet from the press release that just came our way:
"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States."
Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells added that The Last Of Us "will take a leap forward in cinematic gaming and storytelling, providing gamers with an experience unlike anything else in the industry." ...wow.
Original Story:
Oh shut up.
We knew Sony was preparing to unveil a new PlayStation 3 exclusive at the Spike TV Video Game Awards and this past week, we learned it would probably be The Last Of Us.
All we had was a teaser trailer, a teaser site with an even more bizarre video, and some vague theories. Well, you probably wouldn't have guessed...hell, we never would've guessed it, either, but it's actually Naughty Dog's new project. The announcement trailer debuted at the VGAs and the opening message says the footage was taken from the PS3, so we have to assume it's exclusive.
The Uncharted developer is trying something new and we love it. While the concept may appear somewhat simple and even cliched on the surface, we are absolutely positive that Naughty Dog will once again produce a game that is a cut above. It's just what they do. And we think it's great that such a talented studio is taking a little break from Drake and Co.
Sure, it's amazing, but let these guys spread their wings and watch out.

As much as I've always had a soft spot for the Uncharted series, the last one wasn't as good as part 2. Having said that I could never compare 3 with any other game but part 2. The level of quality was, and is, just too good.
A break from the Uncharted series is much appreciated to give that series time to breath more fresh ideas.
The father and daughter story although resonating 'I am Legend' actually resonates more '28 Days Later' to me. Potatoe, Patatoe...it's probably all the same but I'm leaning more towards the latter as the former was shite (compared to the book).

The graphics look great, and it may be a used concept, but so was Indiana Jones ;)
On another note, I was sad to see that Uncharted 3 didn't win GOTY, however I will respectfully let Skyrim have that one. As much as I wanted UC3 to get GOTY, I wouldn't have wanted it to lose to any other nominee but Skyrim.

Well, considering those came before the age of internet connectivity with gaming, it's understandable. Besides, that Jak & Daxter HD Collection is coming up... So they haven't abandoned that. ND doesn't just leave what made them great in the past, completely forgotten. They acknowledge and respect the games that got them to where they are today.
In fact, I'm sure if they weren't so busy at the moment, they'd dive headlong into doing a Crash Bandicoot collection. That'd hit the spot, but I'm content with letting ND do their thing with The Last of Us before anything else.

Resident Evil 4 was last gen when it was hard to make an open world survival game, I think it's best to provide options in such a game now that we can so going linear would restrict those options significantly.

The domain name was (most recently) registered this year.
Usually if a company plans on making a franchise then they register a name for years and years.
But hey, in 2006 they were working on their first ps3 game! So maybe this was their idea before uncharted!!

Uncharted was just practice... lol
But for real, the uncharted development team does have a month or two after they finish a game where they don't have any major projects they are working on. The development team is free to create and try new things during that time.

The Last of Us looks amazing!! I'm adding it to my games wishlist right now!!
I really love this trend developers are taking, with human interaction, relationships and survival becoming mainstream. I love playing as characters with characters who have a background and a real personality!
Looks like Heavy Rain had a bigger impact than I thought, a lot of developers are trying to copy their human interaction and drama concept into their action games, and I for one welcome it. :)

Secondly, I LOVE the title of this game. "The Last of Us"... it's direct and chilling. It's also an unusual title for a video game and I think that's why I like it so much. It sounds more like the title for a movie or a novel.
This looks really, really cool. I can definitely see it being intense and I definitely see the similarities between it and I Am Legend, as others have said. At the end of the trailer when the two characters burst through the doors and into the street, I was brought right back to the environments in Enslaved: Odyssey to the West... and personally, that's not a bad thing.
With it having an extremely fresh and original look to it and Naughty Dog behind it, The Last of Us is an easy Day 1 buy for me. And this is coming from a guy who, just yesterday, told his brother that he doesn't have the time or money for video games anymore and would only buy titles for now and on that were part of his favourite franchises (i.e. Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Uncharted, Mortal Kombat and any Team ICO or thatgamecompany game). I think I can just jot this down under Uncharted and say that I made a mistake. ;)

i just wish a different studio was working on this.
a game like this needs a really in depth believable story, and ND, well, there as famous for that as Ferrari is for toilet paper!
ive always been wondering why a game like this has not come out, its basically the evolution to survival horror.
well, finally looks like the wait is over!
the survival horror genre is back!

Regarding movies this reminded me just as much of "The Road" as it did to "I Am Legend", but both movies are amongst my favourites so this looks promising nonetheless.
But I also sense strict linearity. It looks very Uncharted'ish in those regards. But it's too soon to say. *Definitely* on my radar.

But if you notice their speed, these guys are definitely not slow moving rotten meatbags like those other cliches. These guys are something completely different. If anything they remind me more of the Alien creatures than a zombie. But they used to be human (that's clear too) so they can't be aliens either.
But the dialogue between the father and daughter (who I believe is their relation) reminds me so much of The Road. I put my money on that ND in some upcoming interview will refer to The Road in one way or another.

But above all else, I'm glad ND is getting a new game on the PS3 before the next gen starts. They're stretching their wings and giving Uncharted a break (which is a good tactic, especially if they want to make Uncharted 4 a PS4 launch title). And they're finally gonna try their hand at the post-apocalyptic genre, and I cannot wait to see how they've revolutionized it.
All I need to know now is when it comes out and I'll go preorder it.

Was expecting that Naughty Dog would move to a new IP once the next iteration of the console came about (PS4), but glad to see the PS3 is still going to be getting lots o' love from one of the best developers out there!
Looking forward to learning more about the game!

Like the characters a lot as well from this trailer. Are we going to start getting a new Naughty Dog game every year? That'd be sweet if we got an Uncharted game one year and something else the next that was completely different.
ND is unstoppable.

Naughty Dog: developer that doesn't let us down. Unlike many other badly executed zombie titles (*ahem* *cough* Dead Island* cough*), we need not worry for we can expect ND to add a simple yet surprising element to make it an inspiring title. Inspiring I tell you.
P.S. The girl reminds me of Juno for some reason.
