The Last Of Us May Become A Trilogy

It's an interesting question, and one that is destined to create plenty of discussion.

Sequels are huge in our industry and ongoing franchises are the cat's pajamas when it comes to massive financial gains. New IPs are risky and if a project is successful, the publisher invariably wants another game with the same title.

And I don't think anybody is going to complain that we got more than one Uncharted. However, all that being said, do you want Naughty Dog's recently revealed The Last Of Us to become a series or a trilogy? One source says that if you reverse-IP "lastofus.com," there are three exact matches for the domain: lastofus.com, lastofus2.com, and lastofus3.com. Other reverse-IP sites don't produce the same match, so perhaps this find is significant.

Either that, or Naughty Dog and Sony just wanted all the bases covered ahead of time when it comes to domains and searches. They may have no intention of turning The Last Of Us into a series. But that's the big question: should they? It's bound to be great, but can they keep both Uncharted and this new series going, while each continues to feature the same bar-setting quality? I.e., two award-winning franchises?

That could be a definite challenge.

I'm sure that they simply want their bases covered. They're not going to make a trilogy if the game doesn't work, are they? then again it's ND, so what are the chances of the game not working?

Well, that's my question. ND isn't Quantic Dream, after all. :) New IPs typically become franchises for Naughty Dog.

Anything that Naughty Dog makes is likely to be top quality. I'll be getting the Last of Us AND the next Uncharted without a doubt. I hope LoU makes as many sales as the Uncharted series, if not more.

Exactly Highlander. This is Naughty Dog we are talking about.

Plus, my guess is Sony and the investment group involved in this project understand that Naughty Dog has a "lightning in a bottle" vibe about them right now.

I will say this though.. Uncharted might NOT be the graphics king after The Last Of Us arrives!

Also something to keep in mind is that if a trilogy is planned at the beginning then all three titles will be great in terms of storytelling. Instead of making the first and then trying to figure out how to continue it, the entire story can be told through three games. I'm sure Naughty Dog won't make the games short just to churn out three titles as well.

Mass Effect is a good example; it was always planned to be a trilogy and is doing really well.

Uncharted is my favourite gaming franchise of all time so naturally I want them to focus on Uncharted. However, ND are amazing developers so I may fall in love with the Last of Us as well.

As for the websites, I think they're covering their bases and will probably wait to see how the Last of Us does.

As a ND fan, I'm open to anything they do and believe they are one of a handful of developers that simply get things done right, and have the ability to make great things.

As an Uncharted fan, I'm open to anything new, but definitely want more. I don't mind if the next Uncharted comes out when the PS4 launches, but I don't want it to simply go away, nor do I think it will.

Uncharted series is my favorite, that's an easy answer for me. But it's been a great run up to this point and if it takes a few year, at most ;), for another to release im ok with that, so ND can try new things. On top of which looks amazing by the way! Very excited for "the last of us".

Also I'm sure Sony and ND is just covering all their bases with this. We'll see how far the game goes. But if it's as good as it looks, I'm sure a trilogy, at least a sequel will be wanted, maybe even inevitable.

Gotta say, ND have yet again managed to present a succulent nugget of game footage...absolutely stunning graphics and the fact that it's not PC footage, but from the actual PS3...jaw dropping. This should be proof enough that the pS3 is far from having outlived its potential. It's also an excellent example of what we can expect when developers are allowed to fully exploit a system without the constraints of porting....wow. This will probably be a day 1 or week one purchase for me.

I'm still very skecptical about this, the post apocayliptic setting has already got old after been in every game and film for the past 2 years. I can't imagine myself being excited for mor than one game. I like ND, but this project doesnt interest me at all.

I feel the same. I want to play some fantasy games lol. The game looks awesome but the theme is not attracting me atm. Way too many games/movies/series using this type of setting atm.

Although if this game only comes out next winter... Maybe we will thirst for more undead-ish type of action having played too much Skyrim fantasy and the likes lol

Yes but 100% of those post apocalyptic games tend to be baron, dusty and drab. This one is going to other route with lush greenery and vegetation. It reminds me of that documentary about what the world would look like if humans weren't here anymore to maintain what we have built and let mother nature devour it.

@Ultimadream, that's a fair concern, but this one definitely to change up the Fallout-style drab color schemes that seem to be EVERYWHERE these days and give us something much more vibrant (as Jawk notes)

Oh I am sure ND will bring colour to the title, but even so, the story just does not interest me, the last good similar type of media based on this was the film 'The Road'. Since then I have had enough of them. I will look at the updates, as I do like every Naughty Dog game so far, but as I have already said for now with little interest

Oh, I don't know it had shades of "Damnation Alley" (without the military overtones and fancy RV) and "Logan's Run" (the ruined city) along with a bit of "The Omega Man", heck throw in a little "Day of the Triffids" too.

That's the title, Life After People. The original documentary subsequent series was on the History Channel. The series is on Netflix.

As far as websites, that's just purely getting the jump on the name before anybody else does.

If The Last of Us sells well (and we already know Uncharted has) I have little doubt Naughty Dog will increase their workforce to meet the demand of keeping both franchises freshened up.

But Temjin! they didn't do that with Jak. Yeah, no answers for you there other than I think ND may have avoided Jak because the Wii has siphoned off a lot of the kiddish market. Perhaps ND was concerned about the profits by investing fulling into a younger-centric franchise on a more mature gaming platform.

While I would love me some Jak 4. ND did great with Jak 1,2,3. Jak Racing, Daxter and Jak&Daxter The Last Frontier. I say let them spread their wings and let us romp around post apocalyptic New York. ^^b

I'd love to see some J&D action myself on PS3. Though, ND has grown into a more ambitious developer over the years and I think I would sort of have their efforts focused on the more human side of behavior. As for J&D, if Sony just handed the franchise off to a quality developer who could do the game well(cough* Insomniac*), I'd be happy with that too.

I like the look of this game a lot. It seems like it will be plenty of greenery and not as dusty and barren like some post apocalyptic settings. I love games like that and hopeing this one is as good as it looks. I have faith in Naughty Dog.

Scarcity over abundance any-day... You can make a lot of money by releasing a new game in a series every two years, but in the long run you loose... because it is available in abundance.

Or you can make uncharted scarce for now so people crave it and release part 4 with the PS4. And in the mean time try to develop a new cash-cow.

Yes, this way we get a new IP on the PS3, they can see if it's a winner, and then with PS4 we get Uncharted 4 as a launch title (and probably the final Uncharted) followed by one or two kick-ass sequels to the new IP.

It's kinda silly to think of a trilogy before a game even comes out. Sure this will probably be great, but I doubt they even expected Unchared to be an entire series when they started it.

Looks like ND beefed up their personnel after Unchrated 2. So on twitter one of ND's developers (might be game director for Last of US) said they've been working on this for 2 years already. At least we know it's not rushed

Does look good and most likely will become a trilogy if successful enough but now this begs the question, what about Jak 4? I gave up hope that Naughty Dog would develop it thinking, "They even said they only develop one IP per console." Well, this seems to debunk that argument...

Still, with the HD collection coming, maybe Naughty Dog has an idea up their sleeve, or working with another company on Jak 4.

Gaah, off-topic. The game looks great. My guess would be very cinematic (obviously). Really curious to see some gameplay.

I wonder: was Jason Rubin maybe the chief creative force pushing Jak & Daxter and ND simply didn't "feel it" after his departure.

Certainly, ND was smaller then and couldn't support two simultaneous projects as it apparently now can. Also, the evidence that Sony was pushing its teams to make less cartoony games is pretty strong.

A very valid question Ben. Can they keep two franchises going while keeping the same high quality? Something tells me no. Clearly one series has ended up with the "B" team while... it would appear... The Last Of Us got the A team.

I don't need to preface my comments with something positive about ND so the juice drinkers don't get upset Jawknee. ND has made it clear that the original UC1 and 2 team has been working on TLOU since the release of UC2. How then, I wonder, did they ever find the manpower to make UC3?

Given their track record I believe a trilogy is inevitable. And as long as the game turns out good I would be all for it. However not to be a negative-nancy but developers are bound to make a bad game eventually, I just hope this isn't it.

Post-Apocalyptic games are some of my favorite games unlike many others here and to me I can't get enough of them. I mean seriously who doesn't want to get practice in before the real thing hits, lol. I understand these games aren't everyones cup of tea but for me they are extremely fun. I just hope that the idea of Fortnite(Epic) is in this game. The concept of Fortnite is what I want in these types of games however the Nintendo approach to graphics is not my cup of tea.

After seeing the trailer and reading up on it. I would want it to become a series of games. Ths story has so much going for it. Just think,they can branch away from the New York story and do one in Russia or EU. The potential is limitless.

Well one poster over on the PS Blog has already been doing homework and has shown that this trailer is set in Cincinatti not New York which to me being from Ohio is a nice touch.

This is sorta stuck on my head...
I 'think' i read an article somewhere (at 1up maybe) about behind the scenes and creation of uncharted, and ND said that they wanted to make a post apocalyptic game or in that nature but Sony kept pressuring ND to make a 3rd person shooter like Gears to compete with Microsoft. That post apocalyptic game they wanted to make might have been TheLastofUs but uncharted took prioriy first. let me know if any of you know what important talkin about.
Just my speculations ;p

hopefully ND finally saw the gaping hole, and will fill it with a big series.
