One Of 2011's Successes: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

There are a lot of games that have a chance at winning awards in 2011 and unfortunately, Deus Ex: Human Revolution might not win many.

But there's are reasons for that. It didn't set a new bar in terms of graphics, it didn't blow people away with some sort of vast technical achievement, and it had a few problems that were well-documented (i.e., the issue with the boss fights).

But above all else, Deus Ex was an excellent game the whole way 'round. It was solid throughout and one of the most entertaining and addictive role-playing experiences of the generation. The story wasn't too bad (the pacing was damn good, in fact), the gameplay was smooth and accessible, and above all else, this game stayed true to the franchise. It was exactly what fans of the series wanted; it felt like Deus Ex and played like Deus Ex, and in a generation where so many franchises have changed, this was much appreciated.

But because it doesn't have one particular element that leaps off the screen, it's in imminent danger of being forgotten. And that's too bad, because this is one project with Square Enix's name on it (yes, we know they didn't develop it) that came out nicely, and for the most part, gamers applauded the product. So in looking back at 2011, don't forget one title that did exactly what it was supposed to do.

I tend to rank games according to their objective quality, rather than the sheer fun had by myself (which is, of course, entirely subjective). So even if 'Human Revolution' wouldn't quite top the former criterion, it would definitely top the latter for me. As a huge 'Deus Ex' fan, I don't know that I could have been much more pleased.

I thoroughly enjoyed Human Revolution, it's actually one of my favorite games of this generation, not just this year. Although, I still can't really decide whether I love or hate the ending. I love the ending movies, since they brought up philosophical questions, and didn't just tell you whether or not you made the right decision. On the other hand though, it felt like because of the way you just pushed a button to get an ending made it so everything you did up to that point didn't really have anything to do with the final outcome.


Also, there's a small mistake in the second paragraph, you wrote there's are reasons for that.

I don't think Deus Ex is any danger of being forgotten. It was a solid enough game that revived the franchise and managed to sell quite a few copies.

I bought this expecting it to blow me away, but found it boring. I'm not saying its a bad game, just not my kind of game. I put about 10-20 hours in but the story nor the gameplay kept me interested enough for me to continue playing.

I agree, I played it on 'Onlive' and I felt that the gameplay was just lacking (However I thought the worlds visual art had a lof of depth.) + it was near impossible to not get caught.

I picked it up from Zavvi for £10. Not out of the wrapper yet because of Skyrim but I'm certainly looking forward to playing it.

Just beat Rage and now I'm about to get back to playing this! Thanks for the prepper Ben!

BTW: Rage's ending was very disappointing. I understand what you and the other reviewers were talking about. Sigh...but I am looking forward to the sequel.

I completely agree. Rage is one of the best this year, but the ending blew... in fact, the ending was completely non-existant. It just ended. I hope a sequel is in the works that continues on from the first so we can actually find out how everything went down afterwards.

DE is one of my all time favorite franchises, and DE:HR did well to keep my faith alive in it's future.

Wonderful atmosphere, excellent gameplay and interesting story. Still it's no GOTY contender. That says a lot about the competition. There are many undeserving "losers" this year.

Just to clarify - I *loved* the game. Totally loved it (just as much as I hated the boss fights, actually :D ) but the fact that this game is not often mentioned out there when GOTY is talked about says more about the insane gaming year this has been than the quality of this game. Cause this game is *good*.

this has got to be one of the years most under appreciated games!
if this does not deserve RPG of the year, then nothing does!
what a spectacular game, one that would make the series creator, warren spector proud!
and not too shabby for a new studio!

I really liked the futuristic RPG feel of the game. I can't wait to get home a do a few side quest here and there. I hope we get to see another Deus Ex in the next gen of consoles.

I bought this Day 1, but I haven't got around to playing it yet. The first trailer alone was enough to make me want it, though. The music and the setting was just so epic, there was no way I could turn that down. I'm hoping to get to this ASAP in the new year!
