GameStop Scares Last Guardian Fans, Sony Gives Relief

This is one of those times when a clarification was absolutely necessary to stop widespread gamer freak-outs.

After we learned that Team ICO boss Fumito Ueda had left Sony, many were concerned about the fate of his current project, The Last Guardian. It became known that Ueda would complete the game while on a contractual freelance basis with Sony but skeptics remained...

And those skeptics - along with a bunch of dedicated fans - got a big scare when retailer GameStop called up those who had the game pre-ordered and said, "Sorry, the game has been canceled." The bad news started in the NeoGAF forums and spread. But thankfully, a Sony representative was quick to defuse the situation:

"It's not true. The game is still in development. It hasn't been canceled."

'whew' That was scary. ...we just want to know what gave GameStop the idea that The Last Guardian was canceled. That's still a tad concerning, after all; these things don't just happen...do they?

Quite unprofessional on Gamestop's part, I wonder who/what gave them the tip off in the first place.

I missed this bit of hysteria from Gamestop.I'm glad my pre-order is with a different retailer.

I'm hoping my pre-order doesn't have a second or third birthday before this game releases.

they said it was cancelled because the game has no release date.
which i guess is fair enough, i mean it has been in development since at least 2005!
and we have not seen a single gameplay trailer!
gees, not even DNF was this under the radar!
im just about ready to call this vapourware.
the only game that has been in development for so long and we saw just as much of was wardevil, and that was announced dead last year!
so its only a matter of time till this follows.
and they say PC games take forever to make...............

While the last time I actually dealt with gamestop was back when everywhere else was sold out of the 80gigs on launch day, I can't blame them for thinking the last guardian was axed. It was teased when the ps3 was first launching with the 20 and 60gigs, and at this rate it will be lucky to ship by the time the ps4 arrives.

I got that phone call. it scared the living day light out of me. Thank god it was not true. The Last Guardian is one of my highly most wanted games when ever it comes out.

It's Gamestop, c'mon! The Gamestops by me have listed games that aren't even being developed, not called when your pre-order is in the store and then sold it to another customer because you didn't pick it up within 2 days, have cancelled games that are actively being marketed, and have also accepted pre-orders on digital only games. They have to be one of the most unprofessional corporations out there. Never take anything they say serious, or at least do some homework after hearing something from them.

Would be pretty funny if it was just some 'AH' employe that ended up being a 360 fan. Hell its funny enough that Gamestop would honor the old Duke Nukem preorders when the game was finally released yet call up people and tell them the Last Guardian was cancelled even if it hasen't been in development as long. I remember going there looking for Killzone once and telling the person behind the counter, then he 'suggested' Halo and Gears of War. Not sure what that was all about, maybe he assumed I would have both systems but now I wish I had left the store laughing hysterically right after he said that, it feels like the right respons now that I think about it. Nothing against those games, just would've loved to do that.

I can see Gamestop's reason for this. Why take pre-orders for a game that nobody even knows exists? We havent heard anything about TLG for months/years, and we have no proof that anyone is actually working on the damn thing any more. If i owned a game store i'd take it out of my system as well. Put effort into games and developers that at least pretend to care about their customer base.

You are assuming the game will be perfect. Which would be understandable if we had seen *anything* from the game other than the initial trailer.

I love ICO and SotC, but they are far from perfect and it would be ludicrous to assume that TLG will be the greatest game ever made. Tradition has shown that games that take a god awful amount of time to develop never end up being that great.

I have a feeling this is going to be Team Ico's Chinese Democracy.

I applied at the one right up the street from me a couple of years ago, and I told the manager that I have played Playstations for nearly the last 15 years and could really help their Playstation fans out. He laughed and said you would be the first person here(at that particular branch) that actually knows about Playstation games and products. Mind you I have been friends with him for a few years and that is why he was honest with me. And I laughed my butt off when the person they did hire was an XBot. Everyone of the employees at this store know I don't own a 360 and yet when I go to pick up a game(which is getting rare) they still always assume it is for the 360.

Everyone from Gamestop are not full time gamer like us. I bet we know more about gaming than the most experienced worker they have from the 100s of stores. All they want is your money and that crap magazine with the worst reviews u can read.
