Revengeance: An Ill-Advised Spin-Off Or Something Better?
It's a sensitive question, especially considering the fact that hardcore Metal Gear Solid fans would've much rather seen MGS5 unveiled.
And although Hideo Kojima has specifically stated that the newly renamed Revengeance is a spin-off and not technically part of the core Metal Gear Solid franchise, those fans remain a tad bitter. They just seem automatically biased against the new project, which started its life at Kojima Productions and will finish the development cycle at Bayonetta and Vanquish developer Platinum Games.
But you know, as much as I don't like the idea of spin-offs, as much as I don't like popular franchises resulting in sub-par titles that simply use the franchise name for popularity purposes, I still think we we should give Rising a chance. I'm going strictly by the accomplishments and reputations of everyone involved in this project. My opinion has nothing to do with what I've seen in those action trailers. But when you've got the Kojima team doing the story and characters, and one of the better action-oriented studios handling the gameplay, I think we're looking at something better than a standard spin-off.
I mean, we all have negative associations for the term "spin-off." People immediately think of the word "milking" and assume there's little chance the project will be as good as the classic titles in the original series. And they have good reason for that assumption. It's perfectly sensible. However, in this particular case, if you put all the creators under the microscope, you have to wonder how this can possibly fail. And besides, since when does Kojima put his name anywhere near sub-par products?
Spin-offs probably shouldn't be encouraged, if only for the sake of quality and innovation. Still, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance might be one of those great exceptions to the rule.

Rose: "Cool it Raiden! Wait...why am I calling you that? Cool it Jack! We're finally back together again as a family. We'll get a new dog. Just move on!"
Raiden: "No! I must ruin my life and don my ninja cyborg exoskeleton suit once again!"
Rose: "Shut it Jack! If you put that thing on one more time this relationship is over! We need you at home! You have to take care of our child while I pay the f**king bills with my government job. Your whole ninja thing used to turn me on, but now it's just annoying!"
Raiden: "You don't understand me...nobody does! Snake is the only one that did, but when I tried to cuddle with him, he refused me."
Rose: "Jack, no matter what you've done in the past, I can forgive you. Just let go of the ninja suit and stay at home with your family."
Raiden: "NO! I will not rest...until I get my...REVENGEANCE!"
Rose: "Is that even a word? Oh s**t Jack, you sure did it now. Do you think making up words makes you sound cool? HUH?! God when did you become such a pussy."
Raiden: "Rose..." *sniffle* "You're SO MEAN TO ME!"
*runs away in tears grasping ninja suit*
That is the opening cutscene to Revengeance.

Rising or Raiden, to me, is a boring character to start with, nothing more to say.

i mean when THQ did a spin off RFG everyone loved it, it was a f*cking fantastic game!
when ubisoft did a spin off of PoP everyone loved it, it was a f*cking fantastic game!
now there doing a spin off of MGS, and this is FAR more relevant to the series then the other 2 games, because their trying to tell the story of raiden, the sh*t hits the fan!
so its ok to turn RF into a game totally different to the series.
its ok to turn PoP into a totally different series.
but god help you if you turn MGS into a totally different series, even though this is the one closest to the series roots at least its telling the story of a character in the series not something totally different.
whys that?
do whatever you want to RF or PoP but god help you if you touch MGS!

rrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhhhtttttt...............
the story in RFG and the PoP spin off really did not make sense in the series storyline either so why does it matter?
im really looking forward to it simply because it looks like a freaking awesome game!
especially how they have the slice shots where you can pause time and make accurate shots slicing enemies in so many different ways.
no game has ever had that before!
i much preferred the look of it when it was announced, then it looked like a MG game.
now it does not.
you have to remember it was canned, so either we get a new IP with MG name or we get no game.
and theres not exactly a influx of awesome hack and slash games out there, so the more the merrier!
as the saying goes, better then nothing.
looks a sh*t ton better then bayonetta thats for sure!

Still that aside I did enjoy MGS3. I will make up my mind on PW after I attempt to play it again when the HD collection reaches us in Feb.

Basically, upset Metal Gear purists can be a lot of things about Reavengeance, but one thing they can't be, and that's feeling "bland" about Reavengeance.
I suppose I should just assume it's just a lack of vocabulary or something. Who knows?

I have no problem that the game is an action hack n' slash, infact I think the gameplay could be quite good, but I just don't want the art department to go overboard, the 2010 trailer was fine in that aspect, the new one was just too over the top for Metal Gear.
I can't see it being an essential purchase for me, however I may pick it up once it becomes cheaper. Just to see how it went even.
