Will You Own Multiple Consoles Next Generation?

Of course this is a difficult question without knowing anything about the three upcoming consoles (with the exception of the Wii U), but we're wondering how gamers view their hobby these days.

Personally, I've always had one rule- I just want to play the best games available. And as it has turned out, that means I really haven't been able to own only one console in any generation, dating back to the SNES/Genesis days. The only possible exception might be the original PlayStation generation when I was a strict RPG player and there wasn't anything on the N64 that interested me. However, even then, I could list the PC as another platform I often enjoyed due to the influx of great role-playing games. It was really all I played at the time.

But many will say this is a more expensive hobby than ever before (which I'll take issue with for a variety of reasons, but I won't get involved in that now). If they think it's expensive, and Microsoft and Sony launch decidedly pricey consoles, how long will it be before you're a multi-console owner next generation? Maybe the higher prices are generating more ardent loyalty among the gamers; picking sides means you eliminate a lot of fantastic games due to exclusive titles, but it also means you logically save money. So maybe some people will simply own the platform they believe will get the most use.

It'll also be interesting to see if Sony and Microsoft make some changes in the new generation; for instance, if either of the new systems in question take a different approach to the hobby. Maybe it won't be all about more power and fancier graphics; maybe they'll try to do something a little different. Well, that would mean you'd have to be a multi-console owner, right? Can't miss out on entirely different experiences. ...then again, I have zero intention of getting the Wii U and that's a different experience, so it probably depends on a bunch of different factors.

So based on how you see the next generation shaping up, what do you plan to do? Will you own more than one console? Or are you just going to stick with the one that is likely to give you most of the games you enjoy?

Absolutely. I plan to own a PS2, PS3, Vita, and the PS4 once it comes around. I feel I have access to any game I want this way. I can't find a single reason to own any other console at the moment. It's not like shooters, RPGs, adventure, and online MMO's are stuck on varying consoles. Currently with my PS3 I've been able to dabble in all kinds of genres. Playstation is all I need (so far)

Sony may have had a slow start this generation, but they've proven once again to be the only console I need. Now that we have Mass Effect, the only Xbox game I'm even remotely interested in is Gears of War. But the tremendous selection of fantastic PS3 exclusives drowns that out. I expect more of the same next generation.

I wouldn't be able to have anything xbox in my room, my mind would just resist it, I'd have to put it out of sight or something.
I guess I'm just lucky Playstation is so diverse, I can only laugh at my xbox fanboy friends who keep saying Playstation sucks.
It's their loss, I really don't mind.

Anyway, I'm with Sony from start to finish, so PS4 will be mine, no xbox 720, no WII U, just my PS4 and by then my PSVita of course (I'll probably put my PS3 in some case and put it on a pedestal or something).

I totally agree with you, Sony has more diverse games than Microsoft & Nintendo. I know Microsoft will try to buy exclusives by shoving loads of cash to developers,but the Playstation brand is toon strong to ignore. Nintendo has nothing innovating, other than Mario and Zelda.

The thing is though, if you ever wanted to play something like Zelda or Mario, you can always find something equally awesome on Playstation. Unless of course you've played everything (like, for example I've never touched a Ratchet and Clank game if you wanted a platformer) but then if you're able to buy all the games you want, you should probably own a couple consoles anyways.

Not really though Zemus. There isn't a single platformer that is as creative with its level design on any Playstation hardware as Mario. Not even Ratchet and Clank. Same with Zelda. Their dungeon designs and puzzles are way more unique, fun and challenging than anything found in God of War or Uncharted. Not to mention it will take upwards of 40-50 hours to complete most Zelda games where as God of War and Uncharted take 9. Zelda reminds me of why games were so much fun before the whole emphasis on graphics.

Nintendo has fewer games and fewer franchises but their games tend to offer a whole lot more than just shiny graphics. Which coming from me should say something since I would consider myself a bit of a graphics whore. I love my Playstation and as long as Sony continues to make great games I'll support them. But there really are some unique experiences to be had with Nintendo that most people who would call themselves gamers should not miss out on. Especially since their hardware is so inexpensive now.

I heard that about SMG 1 and 2 Jawknee, but when I played them I was brutally disappointed - I've found because I grew up on PC/Megadrive, I like the rose-coloured glasses for Ninty franchises, and when I play them on the strength of gameplay alone, I find them average (not bad by any means, but at the time I played SMG everyone was saying it was one of the best games this gen, when it wouldn't even have been the best platformer _last_ gen). And I've only ever tried to play one Zelda game - Ocarina of Time - tried twice, in fact, and never finished on either occasion as it bored me into submission.

I'm not saying they're bad, mind, but I fired up some old PSX games of similar stylings released at about the same era after Ocarina of Time bored me into submission for the second time, just to see if it was the age of the game, but it wasn't - Vagrant Story and Medieval were both most enjoyable.

So while I haven't played 3D Land and Skyward Sword, and am very glad you've enjoyed them (and I am, it's all about what we enjoy :) I know most people wouldn't enjoy EU3 or HoI3, but I love em) but Ninty have let me down far too many times for me to spend any more money on them for a whiles yet.

On the by, I can't speak for Skyward Sword and 3D land, but last gens Slys and Ratchets had better platforming than SMG (just marginally, but it was there), and Ocarina of Time's puzzles were solid, but they were _nowhere_ near the "OMG, everything draws its inspiration from this" stuff I'd been led to believe (at least up to wandering around in the fish bit).

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy those great games but you do realize you are in the overwhelming minority right? SMG 1 and 2 are both winners of multiple awards including GOTY for their respective years and to this day Ocarina of Time is hailed as one of the greatest games of all time. Sounds like they're just not you're thing but neither Sly or Rachet have ever earned that level of praise. Both are good games but the overwhelming consensus is that they're not as good.

Aye, I know I'm in the minority, but I have stumbled across a number of other non-Ninty-ites who share similar opinions about the SMGs. Part of the problem is that (unlike your good self) many Ninty gamers _only_ play Ninty, or only play Mario platformers, and similar, and SMG1/2 were definitely a big step forward from Sunshine, but most of the reviews I read seemed to be written in a space where the rest of the video-game world had ceased to exist. I'm also not saying for a second that they're bad games at all - but most of my mates who aren't gamers who don't have the Ninty rose-coloured glasses have a similar view (while my Ninty-loving mates, of course, swear black and blue by 'em ;)).

I can say with confidence, though, that on a purely technical/design level, that the Ratchet and Clanks this gen have SMG beat - the camera's considerably better, the design generally more creative (the design in SMG was solid enough, and it had character to boot (if you like plumbers ;)) but there was little there I hadn't seen before - the main issue I had with the game was instead of trying to really refine the platforming, it kept introducing gimmicks (Bee Mario, Spring Mario, and so on) which it'd use for a few levels then drop, rather than really get creative with the design for these things. If it had dug into the depth behind those power-ups, I reckon it really could have been something special, but it seemed content to play it safe.

As for Ocarina of Time, it's another Demon's Souls for me. By rights, going by genre and general structure, I should love it, but for some reason it just d'ain't match - and so I'm not going to try and say how good it is - it'd be like a CoD fan trying to give sensible commentary on Starcraft. From what I've played (a bit under half the game, twice!) LoZ:OoT is definitely a very well put together piece of software, even more so when you consider when it was made, although I also think that the reviews of it were generally written by people that were primarily playing Ninty hardware (ie, OoT isn't as revolutionary for people who were also playing PC and Playstation).

Though I'm worried SONY might introduce an annual fee for PSN as in Live. If that's the case I might be more conservative and I might not get both.

Don't even know the cost of the next gen console yet. Pretty have a playstation alone anyway, what more do you need? By the time it the consoles come, almost everyone would want to do multiplatform.

Seeing how practically every game I want is multiplat I can *guarantee* that I will only get one console, and it's guaranteed to be the ps4.
I don't really see any reason to own both the Xbox and the ps if the current tendency of going multiplat continues... What is there to miss, anyway?

A Sony playstation is definitely going to be the first console I buy next gen.

If Microsoft would put the same effort into making games that they put into destroying competition, I will give them a chance.

I haven't given the Wii U much thought after seeing the direction Nintendo is going with it.

With all the upgrades Sony and Microsoft will do to their systems, I doubt you'll need a ps4 and an Xbox 720. You'll be fine with your ps4, or 360 depending on the type of exclusives you prefer.

The only reason why I still play games is because Sony change gaming forever with PS1. Allowing developers to create games like RESIDENT EVIL,METAL GEAR, GRAN TURISMO, CRASH, FINAL FANTASY VII, that couldn't be done on Nintendo. Games became way cheaper and developers could take risk on innovating. I will never support Microsoft because they are a cheap copy of the Playstation brand. I wonder if games will be more expensive or cost same,or less. Games are what break or make a console. Without Plastation, games would never have evolve so much that it rivals movies,and graphics that I dont think Nintendo could it have done on its own. And the Xbox would never had exist. This are a few reasons why I only buy and play on the Playstation brand.

the 1st system im buying is PS4 for the consistency of quality. if $$$ isnt a issue next gen a xbox & maybe WII U i get.

i wonder how much more prices of consoles will increase & games. the further developers add more depth of content it involves more time or a larger staff so that means more funds being involved. thats bad for middle class & those in poverty which will result in less sales for all brands.

eh, I;ll probably get every set top console. I always do. I'm actually excited for the Wii U because I'm cool like Jawknee.

The next Xbox will happen for me, but now that I have PC gaming hardware again the next-Xbox's value gets hacked down to like Gears and Halo. That's sort of weak sauce.

I have a Wii and a PS3 at the moment and my 360 crapped out on me, so I've had all 3 this gen. My preference has always been Playstation though so it will likely be the first I buy (as long as Sony doesn't make certain mistakes out of the gate like they did this gen) and the one I play the most.

I dont think i'll be buying any next gen consoles as soon as any of them come out. Im happy with my Ps3. I will quit playing my ps3 when they stop making games for it period end of story. I dont see what kind of advances the next gen of consoles will have. and of course when and if i ever go next gen i will go Sony. I am to old for nintendo (sorry if i affend anyone but that how i feel) & Im no longer interested in anything microsoft does after 3 RRODs. I am a SONY man and proud of it.

This gen seemed slow for me. Sony's PS3 was expensive at launch, + there was still the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. That was holding me back.

More interested in seeing what Sony does with the PS4 first. If I like the set price and the game lineup when it launches, I'm going for it right out the gate. I do want to own a Nintendo again.. Right now, I'm just leaving it to my little family dudes.

I'd tip that I'll start PS4 and PC (my current setup), and if I have time I'll check out the competition. I like playing heaps of different types of games, and while the non-PC Xbox exclusive games look great, they're mainly shooters or racers - of which there are already plenty of on Playstation. I will play through Halo at some stage, but if I'm still trying to find the time to play Resistance 3, doesn't make sense grabbing another console, and would be surprised if it's not the same next gen. But I'd say I'll grab both before the gen's out.

As for the Wii U, I'd say I'll resist it after the Wii and Gamecube's disappointing showings (had both, still have the cube but traded the Wii - the only console I regret owning), but after hearing years of "OMG" stories from Ninty fans will get one late in the piece. Let's hope third time's the charm for Ninty, and that they finally decide to build on their N64 era game design skills that they've been leaning on for the last decade.

I'll only own one console. I bought two this gen ( PS3 and Wii) and the wii was a waist of money. Don't get me wrong super Mario galaxy and new super Mario bros were a lot of fun, but that was the extent of it. There was just to much on the PS3 to enjoy and it still to this day is supplying me with more games than I can keep up with. So im a 1 console type of guy. I used to try really hard to keep up with the best games releasing but I've realized I'm more than happy with just those I have!

Depends Ben if there is a next Gears 4 only on Xbox then I would get the next 360 or 720 or whatever it is called plus any other Halo's out. I will also get the PS4 for any upcoming Ps4 only games like Uncharted 4 etc (if it comes on PS4 that is). I like my gaming and I do not want to miss out on anything exclusive.

If we're just talking about consoles, I'll probably only stay with the PS4. X-Box just doesn't have exclusives that I care about and Nintendo has done nothing but disappoint me since the mid-90s. So I'll stick with the PS4 and PC.

I'm wagering It'll be a ps4 only gen for me. there's no way I could find the time to play all the great games that come out, as it is now I can't even keep up with PS3.

Now, if I were to win the lotto... I'll have'em all. Until then, time and money restrict me to one. I will be getting a Vita for sure though... so I guess that counts as two?

Maybe after the price drops for BOTH. I'll play my PS3 till my extended warranty expires in 2014. If the next gen systems are out before then that'll be great. The price will be dropping after day 1. No more launch day overpaying for me.

Ill pick up the PS4 a PS2 at some point here and maybe w.e. they're calling the next xbox if there is enough incentive and they decide to step up their game a little bit. And when I'm done building a better computer I might pick up some missed titles like Alice on steam and that's another big maybe.

forget the wii u, I am not 6 or 80 so really no reason to even consider it.

So, yes all in all a few more systems will be joining my collection

I won't be buying any of them until after they each have a good size library of "GOOD" games notice the emphasis on GOOD. I have my doubt about the Wii-U (god I hate that name so much) However I'm gonna get one sometime down the road after it's launch, I haven't owned a Nintendo system since I was five, I'm 22 now. I wanna see how well that controller works with games like NGIII and Darksiders.

I love video games and I wouldn't want to be limited to my selection. Therefore I would like to own them all. Like a pokemon master! Unless one console completely sucked. In this case, that isn't true at all.

ok, seems the next gen console again becomes ridiculously hot topics and lots of gamers, like me, are again forced to talk about it. notice i say FORCED, which means what really happened here is I am fully happy and love what I am playing here on PS3, but then unavoidably annoyingly dragged into this thing.

next consoles, do we really even know what kind of media or disc it will use? is it gonna be blu-ray or "black"-ray, say? what level of HD is it going to be? .....we know nothing about it...

Let the industry mature and let it flourish; otherwise, as fast as everything spin around the world, people simply lose more focus on anything.

just PS4 for me. there were no games on the original x box i wanted. and theres only 1 game on 360 i have interest in alan wake. and i've never been a big nintendo person. playstations has always had what i want. and when you look at each consoles exclusives this gen its really like a joke the last 3 or 4 year playstation by a country mile. so yea PS4 all the way baby!

If I decide to upgrade it'll just be the PS4, not because of the expense, but the fact I can barely keep up with the games on one console and the Playstation has always had the games that most closely follow my tastes. For me, two or more consoles would just be an unnecessary indulgence.

I wouldn't buy a Microsoft console anyway, I've never bought a single one of their products, and if anything they've only got worse with their dodgy business practices over time.

depends on their price and what they offer.
im definitely getting a wii u simply because nothing out there offers games like zelda and mario.
definetly wont be getting a ps4 though simply because of how $ony have been treating their fans.
removing features we PAID for!
suing them for opening up their console that they PAID for!
taking away their legal rights.
fine thats how they say thank you for supporting us then there never seeing a cent of mine ever again!
as for the next xbox i doubt it.
simply because they seem more interested in this kinect crap then proper games.
when they go back to the games that made the system what it is today then ill be there front line centre!

eh, ill take paying 7 per month to play online and a superior service that does not give out my CC and personal details, and does not remove features in FW updates, and does not screw up my system then charge us to get it fixed, and taking people to court for doing what they want with the system they paid for over one that does all that any day of the week!

PS4 will be my first buy - but so long as Gears and Halo are Xbox exclusives I'll pick up an Xbox 720 as well. If Onlive continues to improve as bandwidth increases I would seriously look into that as well.

I will eventually own all of them as I like collecting games and consoles. Though I will buy the PS4 for playing games. Nintendo hasn't made anything worth while since the original Zelda, and no I don't consider Mario games good at all(with the exception of the first one). The Xbox just has nothing of interst at all TO ME. If Sega were to make another console I would also buy that day 1, unfortunately that is highly unlikely. I have yet to buy the Wii or 360 as I am waiting for friends to offer them up for say $50 bucks, the same way I got my original Xbox(and only played Ninja Gaiden Black anyway).

Sony has always had the most diverse library and until that stops, I will be a Playstation fanboy.

I'll approach NexGen consoles the same I approach this one. I'll buy the PS4 right out the gate and wait until my money recovers to grab the new xbox.

U know what's gonna happen they are gonna come out with these system and have a high price and nobody can afford it I waited 3 yrs before I got a ps3 why cause I couldn't afford the 600 price tag

I will only own Microsoft products if they are free and Nintendo is too kiddie-oriented for me, so the PS4 is likely the only next-gen console I will get (though probably not at launch).
