Shenmue Creator Wants To Grab The License From Sega
So many fans have wanted another Shenmue installment for so long.
It doesn't appear to be happening, but it seems the franchise's creator wants at least some control over the IP. What he would do with it seems obvious- he wants to make another adventure in the Shenmue universe.
Shenmue guru Yu Suzuki told Shenmuemaster (as cited at Eurogamer) that he's interested in obtaining the license from Sega. The publisher technically owns the IP but he could purchase the license for publishing rights. Suzuki spoke more about what we could expect from Shenmue 3, if the project were ever to exist.
He also added:
"So far we are only at Shenmue 2. I developed the story until chapter 11. It's in this sequel that the part of Shenmue I care about most is hidden."
The guy clearly wants to do something more with this series. It has been nearly a decade since we saw Shenmue 2 and ever since then, there have been rumors about a third installment but nothing has happened. It reminds us a lot of all the "Chrono Break" talk...a lot of talk, but nothing materialized, much to the disappointment of many.
We're sure the Shenmue fans don't want Suzuki to go out like that...

But in all seriousness, why wouldn't he get started on Shenmue 3. He just has to end it.
Wonder what the budget for this one we'll be though.

Independent working grants you free reign, but at the cost of exposure. Take my man Prince for example, the average man will talk like he last had a hit in the mid nineties....the time he left all record deals behind. Over night, no videos on MTV, no radio play (it's all pay to play via record labels) and he doesn't own the rights to any of his songs pre '95. The ways of the industry, folks.
He's released modern classics since, but unless you're in the know, you only know the Purple Rain. If he wasn't a legend, would he still be grossing more than any other entertainer live still? Nope. He'd be an underground artist....sad. Kinda makes you wonder who THEY don't sign today due to the artist wanting artistic control etc....We could be missing out on modern legends that could be!
Anyway, i'm rambling. Point is, it's no different in the movie industry or game industry. The Game industry isn't as corrupt yet, but when games like CoD gross more than the highest grossing films, you know it'll be next...and that's when they milk those franchises instead of supporting originality.......Err.......Uh oh.

The publisher is the one who pays the bills and worries about customers.
Think about all the games that wouldn't exist just because there was no money to fund it...
But what I hate is stuff like this, when a publisher either locks away your potential, because it might not be worth it for them, or they take your creation and change it into something you don't want it to be.

Yu has wanted to do it since 2 came out....it's just the sales of it didn't warrant Sega to allow him another grant to do it.
Shenmue 3 will be made one day, though...guaranteed.
