Jaffe Hopes Twisted Metal Can Ultimately Sell 1-2 Million

We hope you're planning on purchasing Twisted Metal when it drops on Valentine's Day. Eat Sleep Play could certainly use your support.

Co-founder David Jaffe has gone on record saying he hopes the game will sell 1-2 million copies. He added that for the game to be profitable, it needs to at least double the sales of Twisted Metal: Black.

Now, that should be doable. The industry has grown exponentially, and the PS3 userbase is much larger than the PS2's was when Black released back in 2001 (the PS2 launched in late October of 2000 in the US). If the game does appear to be a hit, the team will start working on extra content; until then, however, they haven't planned anything specific in terms of DLC (or so it would appear). Lastly, a PlayStation Vita version of the game could get done if enough gamers respond to the PS3 version.

Jaffe also clarified a few points of interest: unfortunately, Twisted Metal will not boast PlayStation Move or 3D support, as had been rumored by some sources. He said they would've liked to have included 3D, but they just didn't have the manpower. Lastly, while there will be co-op, there will be no online co-op for the story mode. Oh well; we always had more fun playing TM titles with a buddy sitting next to us on the sofa, anyway.

I have fond memories as a child, walking into the room while my brother was screaming obscenities at my cousins playing this game. Ahh, good memories! On a more serious note, Twisted Metal was a big part of my childhood, as well as many others, and I can't wait to dive into this game. This'll be a great throwback to those days.

You know why this game will be great? It's being made by a great developer who doesn't have lofty goals of touching CoD sales.

I didn't exactly look at it that way, but it's true. I've said it once and I'll say it again, you put the time and effort to actually make a good game, then at the end of the day you'll get good game money. It's a simple science. That, and they have a devoted fan base. The fact that, from what I saw, they didn't take anything away from what made the franchise popular to begin with is still there, just goes to show you that the saying still hold true to this day! "If it it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Well, not all Japanese developers have the goal of reaching CoD sales. But if you're referring to Square-Enix then you're certainly right about that. Eat Sleep Play almost certainly isn't anything like Square-Enix.

Its hard to predict how many games will be sold. i haven't played any twisted metal games so I can't tell how popular this franchise is. Infamous 2 was awesome game but it barely sold 1 million. On top of that, many Infamous games were bundled free with each PS3 sold.

I believe that most of the gamers that loved the twisted metal era on PSone and PS2 are in the United States. This generation, United states have been taken over by Xbox gamers. The question here is how many original Twisted Metal gamers are still within the Playstation family?

its pretty damn funny that jaffe had to say that if you want a blockbuster story/campaign, you might as well just rent the game. although people at sony might not like that bit of comment. if you buy twisted metal for the story then you dont know what twisted metal is all about. its all about multiplayer. i dont remember playing the story mode or what the story mode had. what i do remember is split screen multiplayer with a few friends. driving around just shooting everything i saw, destroying the eiffle tower in twisted metal 2.

Well, I've always found the story aspect of Twisted Metal to be interesting enough and more so in the more recent installments of the franchise, Black in particular. But even so I think the core of the franchise is having fun while driving around and trashing everything in the process hence the name.

I like the other day that he said that people interested in it solely for the SP should probably rent it. Honesty FTW! That being said, I'll have to disappoint him. I'll be buying this beast :D

And considering that a lot of PS3 exclusives are selling within that range nowadays, and that it is getting a lot of recognition, I do believe that 1-2 million is a relatively easy target for Jaffe.

I don't see any problem of it hitting that mark really. Though in a way I am kinda curious. It's been 10 years, and in a way, that's almost long enough for a new generation of gamers to come along that has never played the series before. Just wonder if that would have any effect on the sales numbers. Though I'm sure there are still plenty of us older gamers that are still faithful to the series and will contribute our dollars toward it.

I kinda argue that. Seeing as how the first two Twisted Metals were on PC as well. I have the PC and PS versions of both. Twisted Metal 3 came out '98 while Gran Turismo came out in '97, so based on that I would say that Gran Turismo is the longest running exclusive PS franchise even though Twisted Metal started first.

I wasn't even aware this was an exclusive until now. :D
Twisted Metal has long been on my "one to watch" list cause of the 4 player coop in this game. As far as I understand it's implemented in the main campaign, so it will be incredibly exciting to see how it turns out to be.
If done well it will be an obvious purchase for me.

One thing I'm worried about. After actually searching for and reading info about the game, all I can see is that there is only 4 characters to play with a 5th becoming available if you pre-order. Surely that can't be all the characters you can play is it? If so, then that right there may hinder sales somewhat from those of us used to having around a dozen or so characters to choose from as in all the previous games. Being multiplayer focused instead of single player may not help either.

My OP seems a bit confusing. I meant that only 4 of the characters have a campaign story this time around compared to all of them as has been in the past. As Jaffe says in the above link, there will be no online campaign co-op. With any luck split screen co-op will return but it seems developers have forgotten what that is.

Not a chance in hell David i'm afraid. Twisted Metal is nowhere near popular enough to sell 1-2 million copies.

really worried about this game

but to be honest Jaffe is a very personable guy and loves addressing the fans.
combine that with the fond memories of the previous twisted metals and the other games he makes, well i'll purchase this twisted metal just to support him.

but to be honest with this twisted metal, my main problem is the graphics engine being used, seems really dated

but as long as it will have a proper voice chat system (Like uncharted 3) and as long as the gameplay is great and in tact

i will probably still enjoy it.

Twisted metal made me envision vehicles as so much more than what i once saw. They've seen me through some hard times much like a best friend. I remember a time i was relaxing hammered as hell in my camaro i named roadkill and i mistook my doughnut for a hot blonde, none the less my car saw me through this ordeal with a smile.

They should really start focusing on showing the game off. I've barley seen any trailers or gameplay of it. Going to buy it either way since I haven't played Twisted Metal in so long, but if it's going to be focused on multiplayer I want to make sure the servers are gnna be full.

I really hope it does, and apparently there are 100,000 preorders now which is good considering the series hasn't had a TRUE console release in over 10 years.

I think this is going to be one of the best multiplayer games around and the campaign should be extremely entertaining. Jaffe has never let me down. Have either really liked or loved all of his games.

I doubt it'll crack 2 million, but you never know, here's hoping for at least 1 million. I just don't think there's enough hype for it and us car combat freaks are a small (yet passionate) niche.
