PS3 Sells 3.9 Million During The Holidays
If you picked up a PlayStation 3 during the holiday season, you certainly weren't the only one.
At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Sony revealed that they had sold 3.9 million PS3 consoles between November and December. That's pretty damn good.
It also means they're on target to hit their projected sales number for the fiscal year, which is 15 million; Sony's fiscal year ends on March 31. The PSP managed to sell 1.6 million units (outselling the new Vita for a few weeks), and another 500,000 PS2s also went out the door. You just can't kill that thing, you know? Here's what Sony had to say in a statement:
"SCE will continue to deploy various measures to further expand the PlayStation business with strong support from users as well as 3rd party developers and publishers, and will vigorously enhance the world of computer entertainment system that is possible only on the PlayStation platforms."
We've also heard from Sony that the Vita campaign will be quite hefty, which is good news. Of course, we have heard such promises from Sony before, and then things go kinda quiet...hopefully, that won't be the case this time. By the way, is anyone else interested to see the worldwide tallies for the PS3 and Xbox 360 now?

"SCE will continue to deploy various measures to further expand the PlayStation business ..." Like I said, it's just business.

So based off what the MS was able to do in NA they are definitely going to beat this number in WW sales and may even beat it based off the sales of 1 key region.

However the point isn't what happens solely in the US, but what happens globally. No matter how pretty it is for MS and ugly for Sony in NA, the global picture is very different.

I'm starting to think that the PS3 may just wind up outselling the PS2, if Sony plays it wisely. Now, where's the figures from MS?

It's crazy though. To think that at all of Sony's gaming devices are still selling to this day except for the PSone. Granted, its no longer in production but still. The competition can't say the same.

If they were on their own in the industry, it would be good to wait a fair bit longer as the PS3 is really in a great stride. It's far from being on the other side of the peak. In and of itself, the PS3 is in it's sweet prime, as you say.
Unfortunately, Microsoft's system is on the decline in terms of what it can offer. So for them, it's in their best interests to come out with a new console soon. Since it was bad in NA for the 360 to come out a year earlier in addition to the PS3's initial price point, Sony really has to kind of keep up with the same release schedule since most people don't really see the two as being any different from one another.
It's too bad, really.

Sony makes money o video games and the BluRay products and revenue helps offset the cost of developing the PS3. Not to mention that the cost of developing the PS3 was paid for by the profits from the PS2. However selling millions of units at a significant loss created a burden that current profitability is still working on.

360 is on the tail end of its life (in terms of product offerings), and there is no doubt that Microsoft will (and probably should) release a new console in 2013. It's unfortunate that Sony needs to plan a new system to release along side Microsoft's to prevent falling behind.

I also LOVE the fact that the PS2 sold 500,000 units! That's awesome! 12 years old and still selling units. Not that many, but even still, that's sweet.
