Mass Effect 3, Reckoning Demos: Cross-Promotional Items

It's an intriguing incentive to get RPG aficionados interested in two very promising titles.

EA and 38 Studios have announced that a Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo will arrive next week on January 17 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Playing it will unlock special items in the game...but that's not all.

38 Studios has partnered with BioWare for some cross-promotional fun. If you play the demos for both Reckoning and Mass Effect 3, you will receive more in-game items, including the Omni-blade daggers and N7 armor in Reckoning, and Reckoning-themed armor and an assault rifle (the Chakram Launcher) in ME3. Said Chairman and Founder of 38 Studios, Curt Schilling:

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to deliver this massive one-two punch with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Mass Effect 3. We wanted to provide fans of the Mass Effect franchise with a unique set of rewards for diving into the expansive universe of Reckoning."

Yes, that Curt Schilling. The bloody sock Curt Schilling. He has been a big gamer for years, remember. If you're wondering, the Reckoning demo boasts the introduction portion of the game, which lets you sample the huge, immersive world while becoming familiar with the controls via tutorials. Demo length? 45 minutes.

By the way, playing that demo will not only unlock special items for ME3, it'll unlock items for 38 Studios' production as well (which only makes sense). You'll get the Twist of Fate Card (boosts the player's ice resistance), the Twinned Souls Chakram (weapon that boosts player health and mana), and the Infernal Helm (complete the Tutorial mode and get this; it increases a player's fire damage).

Items everywhere, so play both demos!

Wow, that's cool.

Hopefully this is just a start of things to come because 'd love to see these kind of cross-game bonuses & incentive catch on with a lot more developers & publishers too.

oh, okay, I guess I'll try out this Kingdom of Admiral Ackbar game to get my free junk.

Demos are funny these days. Some demos require you to pay money to have access, other demos give you free crap. I like free crap.

then again... I was one of the ones who bought Tobal No.1 for the FFVII demo that came exclusively bundled with it... (sort of. I did like Tobal)
there folks was the dawn of corporate cross promotional demo tactics.

I never knew Tobal had the FFVII demo so I missed that. But I know I bought Dragon Quest VIII mostly for the FFXII demo...as it turned out, I loved DQVIII. :)

Reckoning might replace dragon age as their top fantasy rpg. I really hope the rumors of dragon age using the frostbite 2 engine and make it an open world proper rpg.

The latest edition of Qore features Kingdoms of Amalur and it looks really interesting. There's not a lot of western RPGs these days that does not shy away from using bright colors. There's also seems to be a lot of customization available to the player as to what kind of character he would like to play as. I definitely will be playing the demo. This bit of news just sweetened the cake.
