Multiplatform Ong-Bak Game To Crack Bones This Year
If you haven't checked out Tony Jaa in the last eight years or so, we implore you to do so; the guy's pretty amazing.
It has been announced that Studio HIVE has secured the game license for the next installment in the movie series, "Ong-Bak." HIVE is based in Thailand and will deliver a multiplatform game some time this year. The studio's general manager had this to say concerning the project:
"It’s a great honour for our team to work on the very first Ong-Bak multiplatform game. As a Thai development studio we love the movie and have a deep understanding of the Ong-Bak brand values and we make sure that the videogame will be an inspiring martial arts action experience for gamers."
I'm not as into martial arts movies as I used to be, but I still remember the effect "Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior" had on me. Firstly, Jaa does all his own stunts, which is usually enough of a reason for me to watch. Secondly, I'm pretty sure I had never seen anyone perform a double spinning kick; i.e., not a 360, but a freakin' 720 in the air before striking. Thirdly and lastly, the Muay Thai style of fighting has always seemed particularly brutal in my eyes; lots of elbows and heels.
As for the game...I'll just remain optimistically hopeful.

A little known fact about Tony Jaa. He's from a tiny village not far from my girlfriends. They're very simple village folk. After the success of the original Ong Bak and Warrior King, he was given directorial duties for Ong Bak 2.
The movie went way, way over budget and he went a bit nuts and in the middle of filming ran into the jungle and had a break down for a couple of weeks. Not knowing if he'd be back to finish the job, the original director of Ong Bak came in to take over.
But to make it work there was a lot more shooting to be done, which took the already substantially over budget movie to astronomical heights. So they decided to turn Ong Bak 2 into Ong Bak 2 + 3. Which is why neither movie makes much sense. I was fortunate to watch both 2 and 3 in a cinema in Chiang Mai with the girlfriend and what made the movie fun was the reactions of the Thai people when watching the movies. The story also made a lot more sense to them as it's deep in their culture. But the fight scenes were fun.
As for Tony Jaa, he's now a Buddhist monk, not unusual for Thai fighters to take this path. So don't expect him to make any more movies.

But in any case I would definitely say that Tony Jaa is really something. And while the mediums of movie and video game often don't get along I'd still be curious about this game especially if it draws inspiration primarily from the first film.
